Metal garden shed buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are standing in a UK garden with a mower and a bike that will not live in the hall, and an amazon.co.uk title that already says 6 x 4, with a floor, and galvanised. This metal garden shed buying guide is the order in which to read that listing: the centimetres, the door, then the words floor, lock and vent. The [metal garden shed comparison](/hub/garden-supplies/garden-shed-metal) holds the six listings and their prices. Shelf prices here are from amazon.co.uk on 19 October 2026, checked by the Products Compared editorial team, with no lab test of any shed. Our links can earn a commission.

What the title is allowed to hide

A title in feet is a shop label. Four feet is about 122 cm, so a shorter depth has already missed a nominal 6 x 4. The COZYBRITE 6 x 4 (B0G4M5M4SW, £149.99) is listed at 170.5 x 110.5 x 178 cm, and a UK reviewer could not fit an adult push bike in full length. YODOLLA (B0H35GYFF5, £139.99) puts 2.8 x 1.8 ft in the title, while other lines say 101 x 70 x 95 cm, a 178 cm door, and 36 kg against 27.2 kg. Switdo (B0HF3FH41C, £144.96) says 12 x 10 ft, then 152.2 x 83.6 x 182 cm and 26.4 kg, with no review line when we looked.

Floor, frame or nothing

The word floor on these boxes usually names a steel frame. Buy Sheds Direct states the split: most metal sheds have no integral floor, and a floor-support frame is not a deck. A COZYBRITE 6 x 4 reviewer found struts. A COZYBRITE 8 x 6 reviewer (B0CFV8F2YN, £239.99) bought timber. A Garden Universe 8 x 8 reviewer (B0FH5MK87M, £319.99) says a promised floor never arrived. The Garden Universe 6 x 4 (B0FH5GZY2C, £169.99) advertises a base frame. Read that as steel until the listing names boards in the carton. A frame still needs a level base you can bolt into before the box arrives. Tent pegs failed on concrete for a YODOLLA reviewer, who needed masonry bolts.

Door, lock and vents

A door you can trust is a second pair of measurements, smaller than the wall. The Garden Universe 6 x 4 lists a sliding door of 60 x 158 cm on a shell of 195 x 118 x 183 cm. Sixty centimetres is narrow for a wide mower, though it is a credible opening beside a line that copies the whole wall. The COZYBRITE 8 x 6 measures 231 x 171 x 181.5 cm, and its door line reads 258 cm, which is wider than the building. Which? says a metal shed needs a ventilator, because dew on a cold roof can look like a leak. That fault is covered on the metal shed condensation page.

A six-point check before you pay

Set every centimetre line beside the title in feet, and keep the centimetres when they describe a smaller building. Read the door as its own width and height, and drop any figure that copies the external size or exceeds it. Read floor, foundation and base frame as steel until the listing says the boards are in the box. Have a level base you can bolt into before the cartons arrive, and use masonry fixings on concrete. Confirm a vent is shown, and check whether the hasp screws fit from the outside. Treat a price under about £200 as a light flat-pack, so a 12 x 10 title at £144.96 has to survive the centimetres and the weight. The best metal garden shed page matches these six listings to a small garden, a bike or a larger shell. If you are still choosing the material, use metal shed vs wooden shed.

Common questions

Does "with floor" mean boards?
Usually it means a steel frame. Reviewers found struts in a COZYBRITE 6 x 4, bought timber for the 8 x 6, and reported a missing floor on a Garden Universe 8 x 8. Buy Sheds Direct says a floor-support frame is not a deck. Budget for boards unless the listing says they are in the carton.
Why is the door wider than the shed?
The door line has copied another measurement. On the COZYBRITE 6 x 4 it reads 170.5 x 178 cm, the shed's own width and height. On the COZYBRITE 8 x 6 it reads 258 cm against a shell 231 cm wide. The Garden Universe 6 x 4 door, at 60 x 158 cm, is narrower than the wall, though tight for a wide mower.
Is galvanised the same as hot-dip?
Only when the listing says hot-dip. Galvanised only means zinc-coated. Batch hot-dip to EN ISO 1461 is typically about 45–85 µm, and continuous sheet coatings nearer 7–42 µm, on a Wedge Galvanizing datasheet. These six listings name neither process nor thickness. A Yardmaster hot-dip claim does not transfer to them.
What height can I put within 2 metres of the fence in England?
In England, an outbuilding within 2 metres of a boundary is capped at 2.5 metres overall, roof included, on the Planning Portal's householder guide. A tall apex can fail that limit while the eaves still look low. Scotland and Wales use different figures, so check the nation where the shed will stand.
Is a hasp a secure door?
A hasp only gives a padlock a place to sit. COZYBRITE 6 x 4 reviewers found hinge and latch screws on the outside, reachable with the door shut. A YODOLLA reviewer could fit only a light padlock. That may do for cheap hand tools. For a bike, look for inside fixings and a closed-shackle padlock.
Should I trust a 12 x 10 title at £144.96?
Not on Switdo (B0HF3FH41C) as checked on 19 October 2026. The title says 12 x 10 ft, then other lines say 152.2 x 83.6 x 182 cm and 26.4 kg, with no reviews. Those figures are a small, light shell. Under about £200 in this set, treat it as a light flat-pack and keep the centimetres.
