Solar or battery cat scarer

Updated: 22 October 2026

The corner you care about is either a shaded side passage or a bed that sees the sky. A solar or battery cat scarer is the same kind of motion stake with a different way of staying awake. Shade wants AA cells. Open sky can take a panel. A USB port is what gets a solar unit through a dark British week, if the listing actually includes a lead. The full prices and review counts are on the [cat scare comparison](/hub/garden-supplies/cat-scare). Peter F. used the amazon.co.uk files in this folder, checked on 21 October 2026, not a winter trial of our own. A purchase through our links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Three ways these units are powered

Battery only is the PestBye single at £18.98 and the PestBye pair at £29.98. Each cone takes four AA cells, they are not in the box, and there is no panel. Solar only, with no USB lead in the bullets, is RUTIDA at £15.88 and YRIGHT at £17.99. XWGKLN's bullets describe a panel and no battery changes, though the power field on that page says Battery Powered. Amross names USB-C and lists a cable in the contents, at £24.99. CHAMSUREUK, Joomouney and Nitoer say solar and USB. A lead is a top-up for a dull week. It is not a cure for a passage that never sees sky. The buying guide is where the rest of the listing checks sit once the power pattern is clear.

Shade and a British winter

PestBye's own solar page says diffuse UK daylight can be enough, including a winter they describe in West Yorkshire, and that deep shade under a canopy or a tall fence is when you should use a battery unit in the dark corner and solar only in the open. That winter note is their claim about their solar stake, which is not one of the nine solar ASINs here. A Joomouney buyer had to move the unit into longer sun before cat fouling eased, after about nine days. An XWGKLN flash died after a few days and the buyer suspected the cell was not charging. One Amross unit was dead at about 30 days anyway.

What AA cells cost you

Four AA cells per PestBye cone, none supplied. The pair needs eight cells if both units are armed. Reviews on the pair say a compartment had corroded by late summer even with a rubber seal. RS Components' general AA guidance notes that alkaline cells can leak after they sit flat. A PestBye V2 page elsewhere claims about four to six months and suggests NiMH in the cold, and it prints IPX4 for that V2. Do not move those claims onto the amazon listings in this folder. A Cambridge teardown of one opened scarer found water inside after a rubber seal was refitted badly. That is one unit, not a rate for every PestBye.

When the listing cannot decide

XWGKLN's bullets are solar only, with no USB lead, and the Amazon field says Battery Powered. Kilamef does the same clash and adds unreviewed runtime claims. CHAMSUREUK's bullets say solar and USB, and the power field again says Battery Powered. On top of that, CHAMSUREUK's title says IP65 and a bullet says IP44. Shaded entry: PestBye battery, single if you need one cone, pair if you need two. Sunny entry: Amross, the solar unit with a three-figure review count. Once the cells or the panel match the light, the next job is aim, on where to put a cat scarer.

Common questions

Should I buy solar or battery for a UK garden?
Buy battery if the entry is in shade for most of the day. In this folder that is the PestBye single or the pair, four AA cells each, not included. Buy solar with a USB lead in the bullets if the bed is in open sky and you still want a top-up after a grey week. Amross is that pattern with 136 reviews. Solar only, with no lead mentioned, needs reliable sun and has a much smaller review file here.
Will solar run through a dark week?
Only if the cell is already charged and the listing gives you a way to top it up. A USB or USB-C lead is that way, on Amross, HonexCesng, CHAMSUREUK, Joomouney and Nitoer. RUTIDA and YRIGHT do not mention a lead. A 60-day zero-light claim on Kilamef has no reviews behind it. PestBye's own solar page says all-day shade is a battery job, and that page is still their claim about a stake that is not in this table.
What if the only gap is a shaded side passage?
Use a PestBye battery stake and aim it at the gap. A panel in that passage is the case these listings fail: XWGKLN reviews blame a cell that stopped charging, and a Joomouney buyer had to find longer sun. You can still keep a solar unit on a bright bed elsewhere. The passage itself wants cells, and you should expect to replace them when the sensor trips all evening.
Which of these have a USB lead, and how many batteries does PestBye take?
USB-C is on Amross and HonexCesng. USB, with a cable mentioned, is on CHAMSUREUK, Joomouney and Nitoer. One Amross review says the cable was missing from the parcel, so check the box. PestBye takes four AA cells per cone, eight if you run the pair, and they are not supplied. There is no USB socket on those two listings.
Do the battery bays corrode, and why does the power field say battery?
On the PestBye pair, moisture in the bay by late summer is a review theme, even with a rubber seal. It is not a counted defect rate for every unit sold. The single uses the same sort of cover, and the screws can be fiddly. XWGKLN, Kilamef and CHAMSUREUK show Battery Powered in the Amazon field while the bullets talk about solar. When those two lines fight, trust neither until the page is consistent.
Is a solar panel quieter or more humane than batteries?
No. The power source keeps the circuit awake. It does not choose the sound. PestBye reviews mention squeaks and clicks on battery units. Nitoer's solar-and-USB listing prints 20 Hz–18 kHz and a 3 m gap from occupied rooms. A panel is not a kinder burst. It is a way to avoid AA cells if, and only if, that spot actually sees the sky.
