How to assemble a garden furniture set

Updated: 23 October 2026

The carton is open on the patio and the Allen key in the bag already looks small. You want to know how to assemble a garden furniture set from this comparison, or whether yours is one of the two that should only be unfolded. The complaints that repeat are misaligned holes, a key that hurts your hand, missing bolts, and a glass top that will not stay still. This is the order of work, taken from the amazon.co.uk listings and the UK reviews in the file, plus the half-tighten method UK rattan manuals describe for other sets. It is not a torque figure for these ASINs. The sets themselves are on the [garden table with chairs comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/garden-table-with-chairs). Updated 21 October 2026. Sets you only unfold

Stop if the box is Harbour Housewares, ASIN B091CCKZYD, or the yellow Grand patio folding set, ASIN B088BRBX2J. Both listings set assembly to No. Harbour says it arrives fully assembled and that you unfold the table and the two chairs. The yellow set’s instructions line says the same. Reviewers describe unfolding, not a bag of bolts. You still check that the feet sit flat and that nothing arrived dented. On the yellow set, reviews also mention rust at the joints within days or weeks and a top that scratches, which is a care issue after it is open, not a build step. Do not hunt for an Allen key that the listing says you do not need. Every other set in this batch says assembly is required. Which of those is worth buying is on the best garden table with chairs page, not in the bolt order.

Loose bolts, then tight

Lay the pieces on a flat surface and empty the fixings into a tray before you start a chair. UK assembly guides for other rattan, including a garden-furniture note and a cube manual, tell you to leave bolts loose until the frame is square, then tighten. That is a method for frames in general, not a measured torque for EVRE or Grand patio. If you lock each joint as you go, the last hole often will not meet, which is the pattern Madrid and mesh reviewers describe. Start at the seat or the base the sheet shows, fit the matching bolt with its washer, and stop at finger tight. When the four corners are in, tighten in a cross so one side does not pull the frame into a twist. Aluminium and thin tube dislike a long spanner used as a lever. These listings do not give a Newton-metre figure, so tight enough that the joint does not rock is the stop, not until the thread squeals. Yaangagpe’s single reviewer put a visual sheet at about 45 minutes alone and found a wobble until the bolts were actually tight. Withniture reviewers mention fiddly washers and a slow chair. TangXiaoQi’s instructions field says none were provided, while one reviewer found a sheet and a small spanner, so look in the carton before you assume the field is the whole story.

When the holes or the glass will not sit

If a hole is a few millimetres out, loosen the bolts you already nipped and let the frame settle. Forcing the last screw is how a thread strips, and Florence reviews include threads that were not bored through, so the bolt never had a chance. Madrid reviewers, on both the cedar and the black listings, say the supplied Allen key is poor and that holes do not line up. Some of them finished in about 30 to 45 minutes. Many did not, and they suggest a longer key, a ratchet, or a hex bit in a driver, used slowly so you do not round the head. The listing does not forbid your own key. It also does not promise the holes will match. Two people help when a loveseat side has to be held while the bolt finds the insert. That is not a reason to drill a new hole in the steel. The mesh set is the sharp end of the same problem. Reviews describe mesh fitted backwards on a chair, screws that will not tighten because the holes never meet, and a glass top that keeps moving. One reviewer was at it for about four hours and warned about fingers while the frame was still loose. The listing says tools and instructions are included. It does not say the glass is clamped, and it does not give a suction-cup size, so do not invent one. Seat the glass in the groove the sheet shows, with the frame already square, and stop if the top can walk. Do not drill tempered glass. A cracked top is a replacement, not a home drill job. If the balcony is why you bought a smaller set, the footprint after the chairs are out is on the balcony table and chairs page, and you still build it the same way.

Missing bolts, cushions, or a sheet

Count the fixings against the sheet before you build the second chair. Florence’s bullet says about 30 minutes with another person, in two boxes. Reviews include a couple who took about an hour, a delivery with no bolts and no instructions, misshapen parts, and cushions that were not in the box. In that cushion case the maker asked for a police reference number, which is the seller’s process in the review, not a step you should invent. If the bag is short, contact the seller through the amazon.co.uk order while you still have the packaging. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you 30 days to reject goods that are not as described or not of satisfactory quality, and a final right to reject after that in the sections that cover repair and replacement. Those rights sit with the trader who sold the set. They are not a licence to drill out a blank thread. A retailer FAQ for other rattan brands often quotes about one to two hours as their own average. EVRE does not promise that range. Stop when parts are missing rather than borrowing bolts from a different set. Harbour and the yellow folder are the two that say you never open a bolt bag, which is back on the garden table with chairs buying guide.

Common questions

Which sets in this comparison need no tools?
Harbour Housewares, B091CCKZYD, and the yellow Grand patio set, B088BRBX2J. Both assembly fields say No, and reviewers unfold them. Yaangagpe, TangXiaoQi, Withniture, both Madrid colours, Florence and the brown mesh set all require assembly. TangXiaoQi is the awkward one: the instructions field says none were provided, and a reviewer still found a sheet and a small spanner. Look before you decide the field is complete.
Should you tighten every bolt as you go?
Leave them loose until the frame is square, then tighten in a cross. That half-tighten order is what other UK rattan manuals describe, and it matches the misaligned-hole complaints on Madrid and the mesh set. Locking each joint early pulls the last hole away from the bolt. Stop before you round the head or crush a thin tube. These listings do not print a torque.
What if the holes do not line up?
Loosen what you have already nipped and resettle the frame. If the insert was never bored through, as some Florence reviewers found, more force will not cut a thread that is not there. Do not drill the frame or the glass to make a new hole. Photograph the part, keep the fixings, and ask the seller for the missing or misshapen piece. Two people and a better Allen key solve a lot of Madrid builds. They do not repair a blank insert.
The Allen key is too small. Can you use your own?
Reviewers of Madrid do. They call the supplied key hard on the hands and suggest a longer key, a ratchet, or a hex bit used gently. Your own tool is reasonable. A drill on full speed is how heads round and inserts spin. If the key size is not marked on the sheet, match it to the bolt you can see rather than forcing the next size up.
The glass moves. What does the listing say?
The mesh reviews say the tempered-glass top keeps moving. The listing describes the top and a 75 kg stated load. It does not describe a clamp or a sucker size, so do not add one. Square the frame first, then seat the glass. If it still walks, that is a fault to report, not a hole to drill. EVRE calls its glass tempered or safety glass and still expects you to build the frame before the top goes on.
Bolts or cushions were not in the box. Who do you contact?
The seller on the amazon.co.uk order, with the order number and photographs, before you throw the packaging away. Florence reviews include a box with no bolts and a cushion dispute that went to the maker. You can reject goods that are not as described within 30 days under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, and you can ask for a repair or a replacement. A police reference number appeared in one review as the maker’s request. It is not the first step on every missing washer.
