How to choose a garden table and chairs set

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are comparing a garden table and chairs set because a patio, balcony or conservatory needs seats, and the amazon.co.uk titles all sound alike. A usable listing in this batch includes the chairs as well as the table, prints an open size, and shows whether the top is about 37 cm high or about 66 cm high. Prices here run from £65.99 to £199.99. A star line does not tell you that split. This page is the order of decisions, taken from those listings on 21 October 2026. The nine sets are lined up on the [garden table with chairs comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/garden-table-with-chairs). Nothing here is a lab test. What you are actually buying

A garden table and chairs set, in the sense used here, is one listing that supplies both. A bare table and a furniture cover were taken out of this batch because they do not give you a seat. That sounds obvious until a title says 4 seater and the photograph is a loveseat, two chairs and a low glass top. You are then buying lounge furniture, not a place to lay a meal. The sets that remain fall into three jobs: a two-seat bistro, a conversation set with a coffee-height table, or one rattan set whose table bullet is 66 cm high. Entry prices are £65.99 to £99.98 for Harbour Housewares, Yaangagpe and the yellow Grand patio folding set. The middle of the batch is £109.99 to £134.98. EVRE Florence is £199.99. A Keter resin set around £296 or a Jati teak set around £875 are not in this comparison, so they are not a reason to stretch these nine.

Bistro, lounge, or dining height

Choose the height before you compare stars. A bistro set here is two chairs and a small table. Harbour’s round top is 60 cm across and 71 cm high. Withniture’s is 60.5 cm across and 66 cm high. The yellow Grand patio set does not print an open diameter at all. Lafuma’s UK size guide, a maker’s rule of thumb rather than a British Standard, allows about 55 to 60 cm of table edge per person. A 60 cm top is a drinks table on that rule. You can put two mugs on it. You should not expect two full place settings and a serving dish. EVRE Madrid in black prints a coffee table of about 70 × 40 × 37 cm and a seat height of 37 cm. Florence prints 110 × 65 × 66 cm, and a reviewer says that height is enough to eat at. Both can be filed as four-seat rattan. They are not the same object. Call Florence the tall table in this batch, not a standard dining height of about 74 to 76 cm. That split is set out on the bistro set or dining set page. If the floor is only a balcony, measure with the chairs pulled out, which is the point of the balcony table and chairs page.

Frame, glass, and cushions

The weave is not the frame. Powder-coated steel, cast aluminium and PE rattan behave differently once a coating chips or a cushion stays wet. BBC Gardeners’ World treats natural rattan as a dry-conservatory material and PE weave as the outdoor version, with steel frames that still need care in a British winter. That is context for these listings, not a test of them. Harbour and the yellow Grand patio set are powder-coated metal that folds, and both listings say you do not assemble them. Reviews of the yellow set report rust at the joints within days or weeks, so weather resistant on that page is not a promise that the coating will stay intact. Cast aluminium here is TangXiaoQi at £109.99 and Withniture at £125.99. Neither folds. The black Madrid material field says polyurethane while the bullets say PE rattan, so read both lines. Glass, where it is named, is tempered: 5 mm on Yaangagpe, and tempered glass on the EVRE and mesh sets. No listing prints a British Standard number for the glass. Cushion wording that exists is shower-resistant, wipe-clean or hand wash. It is not a waterproof filling. If a cover is not in the included components, a bullet that says to keep the set covered is advice, not a cover in the box.

Load, parasol hole, and listing conflicts

A kilogram on a bullet is the seller’s stated load. None of these nine listings name BS EN 581, so the figure is not a BSI result. Florence states 160 kg a chair and 50 kg on the table. Madrid black states 110 kg a chair and 200 kg on the bench. The mesh set states 150 kg a chair and 75 kg on the coffee table. The yellow Grand patio set states 140 kg a chair and no table load. TangXiaoQi states 220 lb a chair, which is the seller’s pound figure, not a converted standard. Harbour, Yaangagpe, Withniture and cedar Madrid do not print a chair load in the fields used here. Copying Florence’s 160 kg onto a folding bistro would be a guess. Withniture prints a 5 cm hole and says the umbrella is not included. TangXiaoQi prints a 1.75 inch hole, and a reviewer says the legs sit too close for a base. The hole is not the base. Withniture’s title says white and a bullet says black. Yaangagpe’s colour field says grey cushions and the components line says white cushions. Which set fits which job is on the best garden table with chairs page.

Common questions

What size table do four people need?
Lafuma’s guide, a retailer’s rule of thumb, points to about 90 cm round, or roughly 55 to 60 cm of edge per person, before four people eat. Another size note puts an everyday four-seat top nearer 100 to 120 cm round or about 120 × 75 cm. Florence is the only set here with a table bullet in that rectangle, at 110 × 65 × 66 cm. A 60 cm bistro top is not that table.
Is a 60 cm bistro table enough for a meal?
Harbour’s top is 60 cm across and 71 cm high, and Withniture’s is 60.5 cm across. On the Lafuma edge rule, that is a drinks surface for two, not two place settings with serving dishes. You can still eat a light snack if you accept plates on your lap or one dish in the middle. If Sunday lunch is the job, Florence’s 66 cm table is the listing in this batch that a reviewer uses for eating, and even that sits below a 74 to 76 cm dining rule of thumb.
Should you buy steel, cast aluminium, or PE rattan?
Buy folding powder-coated steel when you will store the set and you have read the rust notes on the yellow Grand patio listing. Buy cast aluminium, TangXiaoQi or Withniture, when the set will stay out and you can live with assembly and a small review file. Buy PE rattan when you want cushions and a woven look, and remember that the steel under the weave still needs a dry winter if the listing tells you to cover it. Natural rattan is the conservatory material in the BBC Gardeners’ World guide, and these outdoor sets are not selling that.
Does weather resistant mean it will not rust?
No. The yellow Grand patio bullet describes a coated steel frame and calls the set weather resistant. Several of the first 50 UK reviews say rust showed at the joints within days or weeks. Harbour’s sample did not show that cluster, which is not a guarantee for a later winter. Cast aluminium avoids a chipped powder coat, though these listings still do not name a corrosion test.
Is a parasol included if there is a hole?
No listing in this batch includes the parasol. Withniture states a 5 cm hole and says the umbrella is not included. TangXiaoQi states a 1.75 inch hole, and a reviewer found the legs too close for a base, so measure the footprint under the table before you buy the base. A hole diameter without base clearance is not shade.
What does a kilogram figure on the listing mean?
It is the seller’s stated load for that set only. Florence’s 160 kg, Madrid black’s 110 kg, the mesh set’s 150 kg and the yellow set’s 140 kg are bullets, not a BS EN 581 result. BSI publishes BS EN 581-1:2017 for outdoor seating and tables, and these pages do not cite it or a test level. TangXiaoQi’s 220 lb stays in pounds because the listing printed pounds. A missing figure means you do not have a number to quote.
