Wooden or metal garden bench

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are looking at two baskets around £48, one with pine slats and one with a black steel back, and both titles sound heavier than the parcel will be. A wooden or metal garden bench, in this amazon.co.uk set, is that fork. The wood rows are pine on a light frame, about 9 to 11.5 kg. The metal rows run from a 10.5 kg powder-coated rose to a 17 kg Grand patio. Neither family is rot-proof or rust-proof on the reviews here. The prices are on the [garden bench comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/garden-bench). Peter F. used the amazon.co.uk listings from 21 October 2026 and the RHS care split between softwood and metal, and did not weigh a casting or run a rust chamber. The benches this choice is about

On the wood side, the Home Discount rose and cross are both £47.99, both 123 cm wide and 53 cm deep, both 11.5 kg, both sold as three-seaters, and both 3.8 stars. The Garden Vida slatted bench is £49.99, 120 cm wide, 9 kg, 4.3 from 1,459 reviews. Bullets say solid pine. Other rows still say cast iron, hardwood or plastic. On the all-metal side, the Garden Vida steel rose is £44.99 and 10.5 kg, 4.5 from 781 reviews. The HLC is £85.99 and 10 kg, with a title that mixes wrought iron, cast iron and cast aluminium. The Grand patio is £159.98 and 17 kg. None of these eleven has a single clean material row that says cast aluminium.

When the pine slats are the better idea

Choose the pine slats if you want the look of wood and you will accept a light frame, a varnish job, and a seat that reviews often describe as two people rather than three. Rain falls through the gaps. Reviewers of the slatted Garden Vida mention that, which is a real advantage over a solid metal seat that holds a puddle. Seat height is 36.5 cm, so it sits low. The manufacturer warranty line says no. A UK comment reports light rust after a short time outside, so the iron under the pine is not exempt. The Home Discount pair is where the finish complaints pile up: thin varnish, poor sanding, chips around screw holes, and a rose back with no centre support. Cast iron on an 11.5 kg bench is a title, not a casting.

When metal is the better idea

Choose metal if you would rather watch a coating than feed timber, and if you can accept that a chip is the start of rust. At the same £45 to £50, the steel rose has the clearer star line: 4.5 from 781, against 3.8 on both wood Home Discount benches. The pattern name disagrees with itself, rose in the title and tulip in a bullet, which does not change the material. A UK review reports rust spots and a scratched carton with missing feet. Powder coat is a delay, not a seal you can ignore. The HLC, at £85.99 and 10 kg, is the other metal fault. A UK review says open tube ends hold rain and can rust from the inside. A weld was absent rather than broken later. The VEVOR, at £64.99, adds arms and a 42 cm seat. Its technical row says no assembly, while the bullets and the reviews say you build it.

What neither listing proves

A cast-iron title on a bench of about 10 to 11.5 kg is the mismatch this search creates. Solid cast iron of that length would be an awkward lift for two people. These parcels are light steel or iron tube and flat pine, with a decorative back. The HLC's extra words, including cast aluminium, do not survive the frame row, which says iron, or the 10 kg weight. Aluminium, in the Ideal Home sense of a metal you worry about less, is not what you are being sold in a clean spec here. BS EN 581-2 is not cited here, so a kilogram bullet is not a weather test. Named picks are on best garden bench, the wider order is the garden bench buying guide, and the wash is on how to maintain a garden bench.

Common questions

Will the £48 pine bench outlast the £45 steel bench?
This file cannot say. The Home Discount wood benches are 3.8 stars with varnish and flex in the reviews. The steel rose is 4.5 from 781, with rust spots and scratches in the reviews. No listing cites a weather-ageing test, and no year count is used here. The pine bench lasts longer only if you keep the varnish and the steel's chips are ignored, which is a habit, not a result we measured.
Why do cast iron benches weigh about 10 kg?
The steel rose is 10.5 kg, the HLC is 10 kg, and the Home Discount wood frames are 11.5 kg. A decorative back in thin metal can look like a casting in a photograph. The parcel weight is the check. If you can carry the box without a second person struggling, you did not buy a solid cast bench, whatever the title says. The Grand patio, at 17 kg, is heavier and still described as alloy steel, not cast iron.
Is the Grand patio the metal bench to choose if rust worries you?
It is the metal bench with the largest review sample and the heavier frame, at £159.98 and 17 kg. UK reviews call it sturdy, and several say they have not had rain yet, so rust is unanswered rather than disproved. The coating is sold as anti-rust powder coat. That remains a seller claim. Choose it if you want more evidence and more weight than the £44.99 steel rose, and you accept that a winter result is not in the review file.
Where does the Furinno fit if it might be meranti?
The Furinno is £117.99, about 150 cm wide and 22 kg, with 4.2 from 34 reviews. The bullet says dark red meranti with teak oil. The material row says teak. No FSC code is printed. It is the bench to consider when you want a wider wooden seat and you will not call it certified teak. It is not the answer to the £48 pine-versus-steel question, because the price, the weight and the species line are all different.
Does powder coat mean it will not rust?
No. The steel rose is powder-coated, and a UK review reports rust spots. The slatted bench has a powder-coated metal frame under pine, and a UK review reports light rust. The HLC's paint is described as anti-rust, and a review points at open tubes that hold water. Powder coat and paint slow the damage where they stay intact. A chip, a scratch from the courier, or an open end is where you look in spring.
