Garden bench buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a patio, a porch or a strip of lawn, and the listing in the basket says three seats and 240 kg. A garden bench buying guide has to put the tape ahead of both of those claims. In this amazon.co.uk set, benches sold as three-seaters are often about 120 to 128 cm wide and about 53 cm deep. Prices in the file run from £44.99 to £162.50 on 21 October 2026. The eleven rows sit on the [garden bench comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/garden-bench). Peter F. used those amazon.co.uk listings and public UK pages, and did not load-test a frame. How many people the centimetres actually seat

White Stores, a UK retailer, publishes a length table of about 4 ft for two people and 5 ft for three. Wilfirs, a wooden-bench maker, uses about 1.2 m for two and 1.5 m for three. Both are retailer rules of thumb, not a law and not a test. Four feet is about 122 cm. Five feet is about 152 cm. A bench near 120 cm can take two adults with shoulders apart. It becomes a tight three once you want space to turn. The HLC is sold as two seats, which matches a light decorative bench better than a 150 cm claim would.

Seat height and a back

Wilfirs suggests a seat height around 450 mm and a seat depth of 400 to 450 mm as a comfort target for a wooden bench. The clean seat heights in this file are lower. The Garden Vida slatted bench is 36.5 cm. The steel rose and both Home Discount benches are 39 cm. The Grand patio and the VEVOR are 42 cm. A 36.5 cm seat is closer to a low picnic perch than to a dining chair. A back changes the sit more than 3 cm of height. The Keter Eden is a resin box with a lid, sold for two, with no back and no arms. If a long sit is the job, skip the box even when the star line looks busy.

Material in one pass

The material is the job you will do next spring, not the adjective on the title. In the entry band, about £45 to £65, this file contains both pine-and-metal slat benches and light steel benches. The Home Discount rose and cross are £47.99 each. The Garden Vida slatted bench is £49.99. The Garden Vida steel rose is £44.99. They are not three grades of one product. Pine slats still need the varnish to stay intact, and a UK review on the slatted bench reports early rust on the metal. Painted metal asks you to watch chips instead. The Furinno names both meranti and teak, with no FSC code. Wood against metal is on wooden or metal garden bench, the box is on garden bench with storage, and care is on how to maintain a garden bench.

What the kilogram line is not

Every backed bench here prints a large load: 200 kg, 218 kg, 240 kg or 300 kg. The Furinno prints 300 lb rather than a kilogram figure. BS EN 581-2:2026, the British Standard for outdoor seating used in camping, domestic and contract settings, bases its mechanical tests on users up to 110 kg. It does not cover street furniture, and it does not include a weather-ageing test. None of these eleven listings cites that standard. A 240 kg bullet is the seller's figure. It is not a statement that the bench passed BS EN 581-2, and it is not a statement that it failed.

Before you order

Tape the space: width, depth, and the path from the door. Name the material in the bullets, not only the title. Almost every bench here needs a build. The VEVOR technical row says no assembly, while the bullets and UK reviews describe putting it together, including a manual that one buyer said was for a different bench. Read the star line with the count. A 4.6 from 2,112 reviews is stronger evidence than a 4.8 from 22. The two Keter pages share one 14,228-review text.

Common questions

How wide should a garden bench be for two people, and for three?
A UK retailer rule of thumb is about 4 ft (122 cm) for two people and about 5 ft (152 cm) for three. A maker's wooden-bench guide uses about 1.2 m and 1.5 m. Neither figure is a British Standard. In this amazon.co.uk set, several three-seater benches are only 120 to 128 cm wide, so two adults is the more realistic sit if you want shoulders apart. Measure your wall before you trust the seat count on the title.
Is a 123 cm bench really a three-seater?
The Home Discount rose and cross benches are 123 cm wide and 53 cm deep, and both are sold as three-seaters at £47.99. A reviewer who is 5 ft 10 in said the rose depth felt like perching. Reviews of the 120 cm slatted bench often describe two adults. You can seat three people who are happy to sit close. You should not expect the space of a 1.5 m bench. Keep the centimetres when they disagree with the title.
What seat height is comfortable, and how low are these benches?
A wooden-bench maker aims at about 450 mm. The clean heights in this file are 36.5 cm on the slatted Garden Vida, 39 cm on the steel rose and both Home Discount benches, and 42 cm on the Grand patio and the VEVOR. The lower figure will feel like a picnic seat if you are used to a dining chair. Several other listings print a height that is really the overall height, so do not treat every inch figure as a seat.
Does a 240 kg or 300 kg label mean a safety test?
No listing in this set cites BS EN 581-2. That standard covers domestic outdoor seating, bases mechanical tests on users up to 110 kg, and does not include a weather-ageing test. A 240 kg or 300 kg line is the seller's figure. It is useful for comparing one page with another. It is not a certificate that the bench passed, or failed, the standard. Three adults at the standard's user basis already exceed 240 kg.
Hardwood, pine, steel or plastic: which problem does each leave you with?
Pine slats need the varnish watched, and the metal under them can still rust. Powder-coated steel needs chips watched, which is a different job from oiling timber. The plastic bench in this set needs no oil, and it has only 22 reviews. The Furinno row says both meranti with teak oil and teak, and none of the eleven prints an FSC code. Pick the maintenance you will actually do, then open the wood-or-metal page if you are still between pine and steel.
