How to maintain a garden bench

Updated: 22 October 2026

The bench is on the patio and you are holding a tin of oil because a video said garden furniture needs feeding. That routine will mark a powder-coated frame and do nothing useful for a resin box. How to maintain a garden bench starts with the material you bought: pine slats, painted or powder-coated metal, or a Keter-style resin lid. Oil, varnish and a rust touch-up are different jobs. A broken weld is a return, not a weekend project. Prices and materials are on the [garden bench comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/garden-bench). Peter F. used the amazon.co.uk files from 21 October 2026, the RHS seat-care page and the Eden manual, and did not leave a bench out for a measured winter. Match the job to the material

Several listings in this set say only wipe with a dry cloth, or a damp cloth. That is a seller care line for crumbs and pollen. It is not a full UK winter plan for pine varnish or for a chipped coat. The Garden Vida slatted bench and the Home Discount rose both print a manufacturer warranty line that says no, so a care mistake is not something those pages promise to repaint for you. If you have not bought yet, the material fork belongs on the garden bench buying guide and on wooden or metal garden bench. If the bench is already yours, name the slats or the coating before you open a tin.

Wood, including the teak-oil trap

For a pine slat bench, on a dry day, brush off grit so you are not sanding mud into the varnish. Wash with warm water and a little washing-up liquid, then rinse and let the slats dry fully before anything else goes on. The RHS points treated softwood towards a preservative stain when the old finish has thinned, again in dry weather. The Home Discount cross reviews describe varnish missing in places and chips around screw holes. Those are the spots that take water first. Teak oil is the trap in this set. The Furinno Tioman bullet says dark red meranti treated with teak oil, and the material row says teak. No FSC code is printed. Oil is a colour choice on real teak, which the RHS says can be left to silver after a wash. It is the wrong tin for pine varnish and for powder coat. Do not copy that onto the steel rose.

Painted metal

Powder coat and paint fail at a chip, a scratch and an open tube, not in the middle of an intact panel. Wash the Garden Vida steel rose, the Grand patio, the HLC or the VEVOR with mild detergent and a cloth, then dry it. The HLC listing itself says mild detergent and a clean dry cloth. A pressure washer is not advised here. It can lift a thin coat, and none of these pages tells you a safe pressure. When the coat has chipped, clear loose rust, dry the spot, and touch in with a suitable exterior metal paint. The RHS two-to-three-year repaint is advice for metal furniture in general. It is not a timer printed on these ASINs.

Resin and the wet lid

The Keter Eden manual is the resin path, and it should not be merged into the metal checklist. After rain, wipe the box before you open it. Water on the lid runs inside onto cushions if you lift the lid wet. Wipe means a cloth, not a stiff brush, which the manual rules out. Do not stand or kneel on the lid. The stated load of 250 kg is still a seller figure. Children should not play inside the box. Do not store hot, flammable or corrosive things in it. There is no oil step and no varnish step. If you are still deciding on the box, the missing back and the size rows are on garden bench with storage.

When to stop and use your rights

Touch-up paint is for a chip. It is not for a frame that has come apart. A weld that was never there on arrival, which one HLC review describes, and legs that arrive broken, which one Home Discount rose review describes, are faults in the goods. Photograph the carton, the part and the listing. Section 23 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is repair or replacement when goods do not conform. Sections 20 to 22 are the short-term right to reject. Two Garden Vida files print warranty as no, which does not remove the statutory rights. Stop and speak to the seller if a joint fails in use, or if the bench is meant for a public path or has to be bolted to a wall.

Common questions

How do you look after a pine slat bench?
Brush off grit, wash with warm water and a little washing-up liquid on a dry day, rinse, and let the wood dry. If the varnish has worn, the RHS points treated pine towards a preservative stain, not towards a random teak-oil tin. Bare patches around screws, which reviews mention on the cross bench, are where water gets in. A listing that says wipe with a dry cloth is the everyday line, not the winter repair.
Should you oil teak, and what if the listing says meranti and teak?
The RHS treats oil on teak as optional colour care. Teak can silver after a wash if you leave it. The Furinno listing says meranti with teak oil in one place and teak in another, with no FSC code. Do not oil that bench as if the species were settled, and do not oil pine varnish or a powder-coated frame. A seller's once-a-year oil note applies to their product, not to every seat in this set.
What do you do when powder coat chips?
Wash and dry the area, clear loose rust, and touch in with a suitable exterior metal paint once the metal is dry. That is the sensible response to the rust spots reported on the steel rose and to scratches a reviewer expected to repaint. The RHS suggests checking metal furniture and repainting on a two-to-three-year rhythm as general advice. It is not a date stamped on these listings. Do not pressure-wash the coat off.
How do you clean a resin bench without a pressure washer?
Use a damp cloth, which is what the Eden listings say. The manual also says no stiff brush. There is no oil and no varnish. Wipe the lid after rain before you open it, so water does not run onto whatever you stored. Do not stand on the lid. That instruction is the Eden manual's, and the shared reviews include a bolt failure you should not test with your weight.
When is rust a return rather than a touch-up?
A small spot on an otherwise sound coat is a touch-up, which reviews of the steel rose already anticipate. A leg broken in the carton, a bracket missing, or a weld that was never made are returns, with photos, under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. A frame that fails in use is a conversation with the seller, not a tin of paint. Statutory rights still apply where a listing's warranty line says no.
