Folding bench vs garden bench

Updated: 22 October 2026

A folding bench vs garden bench choice is a choice between a backless plastic trestle of about 180 cm, often near £27 to £32 on amazon.co.uk, and a shorter wooden seat with a back that you leave on the patio, often nearer £128 to £160. One is overflow for an evening. The other is the seat that stays out. The four trestle listings and their prices are on the [folding bench comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/folding-bench). This page does not pick a winner among them. Peter F. compared those amazon.co.uk listings on 21 October 2026 with wooden benches from other UK shops and did not weather a frame. Two products share the words

A fold-in-half trestle here has a hard plastic top, a metal frame, a hinge, and no back. Open length is about 180 cm, seat depth about 26–30 cm, and seat height about 42–42.5 cm where it is printed. You carry it, lock it, and put it away. A timber folding garden bench is a different sit. Za Za Homes lists a teak bench at £159.99, about 100 cm long, with a 36 cm seat and a back. Garden Trading’s Netherton is 120 cm wide, shown at £128 against £160, and the page recommends teak oil. John Lewis lists an ANYDAY acacia two-seater around £149. Three extra places that must be in a cupboard by morning are the trestle. Two people with their backs supported on a Saturday afternoon are the garden bench. B&Q’s plastic category mixes a £25.99 Harbour trestle with storage benches around £140 to £170, which is why the search feels muddled. If you stay with the trestle, load and lock belong on the folding bench buying guide.

Buy the trestle for the evening

Buy the plastic trestle when the job is extra places, then storage. The reviews describe a hard seat that is fine for the meal and uncomfortable if you stay. One bench covers one side of a long table. Folded, the black Harbour bullet is 90 × 7.5 × 26.5 cm and Lifetime’s title prints 9.8 × 96.0 × 30.5 cm. Listed weights for the singles that state them are 7 kg and 7.5 kg. It is a poor only-seat for a patio, because there is no back. The prices here are £26.99, £31.99, and £61.99 for the black pair. Do not move a John Lewis, Za Za, or B&Q price onto these ASINs. Indoor/outdoor means the seller allows both. It does not mean you leave the bench out in November. A Harbour review says there is no centre-leg bar, so feet dig in off solid ground. Guest count and table height are on the folding bench for parties page.

Buy a garden bench for the patio

Buy a garden bench when someone will sit still. You want a back, a deeper seat, and a length for two rather than a 180 cm plank for three. Expect about £149 for a foldable acacia two-seater, about £159.99 for a 100 cm teak bench, and about £128 to £160 for a 120 cm teak bench. Those pages talk about oil. A trestle’s care line, where it exists, is a damp cloth or a dry cloth. You can fold some of those wooden benches, so folding does not settle the argument. A 100–120 cm teak seat still lives as garden furniture. Notcutts is right that a long sit needs comfort. A backless pad will not become that sit because the title says garden. BS EN 581-2 does not test weathering, and none of the trestle files claims the standard or a UV coating. A mention of UV coatings on other benches does not make the Harbour trestle UV-proof.

What not to mix in

A storage bench is a third product, a box you sit on, often £140 to £170, not a fold-in-half seat. A gym bench is a fourth product, a pad for weights. Those listings were left out of this comparison on purpose. A fabric sideline bench is sports seating, not a garden trestle either. Once you know you want overflow, Lifetime against Harbour stays on the best folding bench page. This page will not repeat it. The exit is: trestle for the evening and the cupboard, garden bench for the patio, storage bench if the seat is also a box, gym bench if the fold is for exercise.

Common questions

Is a folding bench a garden bench?
Sometimes the title says garden, and the object is still a party trestle. In this set the folding bench is about 180 cm, backless, and meant to fold to about 90–96 cm. A garden bench you leave outside is usually shorter, has a back, and costs nearer £149 than £30. Folding teak benches exist, and they are the garden bench, not the trestle.
When is about £30 enough?
When you need extra places for a meal or a stall and the bench goes away the same day. The trestle prices are £26.99 to £31.99 for a single and £61.99 for two black benches. That money buys a hard seat without a back. It is enough for overflow. It is poor value if the real job is an afternoon sit, because you will replace it.
Will plastic fade if I leave it out?
These listings do not claim a UV coating, and BS EN 581-2 does not cover weathering. A damp-cloth or dry-cloth care line is not a leave-out promise. Plastic garden furniture that is sold to stay outside is a different product, even when a category page mentions UV on other benches. If the trestle lives in a cupboard and comes out for the party, fade is a smaller question than the lock and the ground.
Is a folding teak bench the same purchase?
No. The Za Za Homes teak bench is about 100 cm, with a back and a 36 cm seat, at £159.99. Garden Trading’s is 120 cm and folds to about 9 cm deep, with oil recommended. You still fold it, and you still oil it or cover it. You do not get a 6 ft side for a trestle table, and you do not get the £27 price.
Can I use the trestle as the only patio seat?
You can sit on it outside for an evening, on firm ground, and then you will notice the missing back. Reviewers already call the plastic seat uncomfortable for a long sit. As the only garden seat it is the wrong tool. Pair it with a proper bench if you want both a party side and a place to stay, or buy only the garden bench if parties are rare.
Do I still compare Lifetime and Harbour here?
Not on this page. If you have decided the job is a trestle, the main comparison holds the four prices, the locks, and the review counts. If you have decided the job is a patio seat with a back, those four rows are no longer the choice. A storage bench is a third door, and it is not hiding inside either price.
