Folding bench buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are reading a folding bench buying guide because a 6 ft plastic bench, a gym bench, and a wooden garden seat all appear in the same search, and a kilogram on the title does not tell you which page to open. On amazon.co.uk the four listings kept here are fold-in-half utility benches about 180 cm long. The four rows and the prices sit on the [folding bench comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/folding-bench). Peter F. read the amazon.co.uk listings on 21 October 2026 and did not run a load test. What you are actually buying

A folding bench in this set is a backless plastic seat on a metal frame that hinges in the middle. Open, the Lifetime row is 29 × 183 × 42 cm, the black Harbour bullet is 180 × 26.5 × 42.5 cm, and the white Harbour listing prints 30.5 × 183 × 42.5 cm. The seat is hard and roughly 26–30 cm deep. People more often say three adults sit comfortably. The seating field says 4 on three listings and 2 on the pair. That 2 fights the title of a two-bench pack. Drop a gym bench or a fabric soccer sideline bench before you compare prices. A wooden two-seater with a back, such as an acacia garden bench around £149, is a different purchase. That split is on the folding bench versus garden bench page. Indoor and outdoor on the title is permission to use the bench in both places, not a promise it can stay out all winter. None of these four listings cites BS EN 581-1 or BS EN 581-2. Absence is not proof that a bench fails the rules.

Read the load before the adjective

The kilogram and pound figures look like a ranking, and they are not one. Lifetime’s maximum-weight field says 1,000 pounds. The black Harbour single puts up to 250 kg in a bullet and has no separate maximum-weight field. The pair’s field says 250 kilograms. The white field says 220 kilograms. Each is a seller total, and they are not the same unit. BS EN 581-2 bases mechanical tests on persons up to 110 kg, and weathering sits outside that scope. The BSI page shows an edition dated 31 October 2026, after this reading on 21 October 2026, so this guide does not say that edition is already in force. None of the amazon.co.uk files claims the standard. Do not merge other shops into the Amazon field. B&Q’s Harbour white page states 220 kg at £25.99. Tesco’s note for a black Harbour says 220 kg, while the amazon.co.uk black bullet says up to 250 kg. Pro-Fold’s sheet for the 80305 states 300 kg and a carry handle, and those words are not in the amazon.co.uk file. A search tile on 21 October 2026 showed Lifetime at £29.99, and that tile does not replace the file price of £26.99.

Lock, ground, and folded size

Sit only after the lock you can see is engaged. Lifetime names a safety locking mechanism. The white Harbour listing names locking legs. Both black Harbour listings say the frame opens and secures, which is a thinner sentence than a named lock. A locking pin that slides off is a repeated Lifetime review. The open-and-fold sequence is on how to fold a folding bench. A Harbour review says there is no bar on the centre legs, so the feet dig in off solid ground. These listings do not claim a bottom cross bar. A wooden festival bench at £68.99 advertises one, and that is a different product. Boards under the feet are the practical step on a lawn. Harbour black’s folded bullet is 90 × 7.5 × 26.5 cm, at 7.5 kg for the single and 15 kg for the pair. Harbour white’s folded bullet is 91.5 × 9.5 × 30.5 cm, and a second line prints 31.5 × 93 × 10 cm, so use the bullet for the closed size. Item weight on the white file is not stated. Lifetime’s title prints 9.8 × 96.0 × 30.5 cm beside the 6 ft name. Treat that trio as folded and the 183 cm line as open. A carry handle is named on the Harbour listings. Lifetime’s bullets do not name one.

One bench or two

One bench of about 180 cm covers one long side of a dining table. Two cover both sides. Two black singles are £63.98 in this snapshot, and the pair is £61.99, about £1.99 less. That gap is why the pair is the best value row, and only as a price per bench among the Harbour listings. Two Lifetime benches at £26.99 each would still cost less if you do not need black. The pair’s assembly field says Yes, while the instructions say to open and secure the frame. Read both lines before you assume a pull-open. The Harbour star line is 4.4 from 160 on each ASIN, and the texts are one shared block. Do not add 160 three times. Lifetime is 4.8 from 3,542, a separate sample. Who should open which row sits on the best folding bench page.

Common questions

What length do I need beside a dining table?
These four benches are about 180 cm, or 6 ft, open. That length matches one long side of a typical 6 ft trestle, not a 4 ft card table. If your table is about 180 cm, one bench covers one side and you still need chairs, or a second bench, for the other side.
Is 220 kg, 250 kg, or 1,000 pounds a test I can compare?
No. Each figure is what that seller printed. Lifetime states 1,000 pounds in a maximum-weight field. The black single states up to 250 kg in a bullet only. The pair’s field says 250 kg and the white field says 220 kg. BS EN 581-2 talks about test persons up to 110 kg, and none of these listings cites it.
Will it be all right on the lawn?
The titles allow outdoor use. They do not show a centre bar that spreads the load on grass. A Harbour review says the feet dig in off solid concrete and links that to broken welds. A wooden festival bench elsewhere advertises a bottom bar for soil, and that bar is not on these plastic listings. Use boards or paving if the ground is soft. A slope is a poor place for tubular feet even when the page says outdoor.
Does outdoor mean I can leave it out all year?
Indoor/outdoor on these pages means the seller offers the bench for both, with a damp cloth on the Lifetime and a dry cloth on the white Harbour. The black listings do not state a care method. BS EN 581-2 does not test weathering, and these files do not claim a UV coating. A seat you want on the patio every day is a garden bench, not this trestle.
Why do the assembly fields disagree with the bullets?
They were copied as printed. Lifetime and the black single say assembly is not required, though Lifetime also mentions instructions in the box and reviewers say none arrived. The pair says assembly is required and then says no assembly, just open and secure. The white listing says assembly is required and has no instructions sentence. Treat open and secure as the job, and do not sit until the lock is home. A Yes in the assembly field is not a toolkit list.
How many adults fit on 180 cm, and what if it arrives bent?
Plan on three adults in comfort. Four is what some reviewers managed by sitting closer, and the seating field that says 4 is the seller’s count, not a measured test. If a frame arrives bent, that is a description problem under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 9. One shared review put a return at £18. That is one shopper’s figure, not the statute.
