How to lay a chair mat

Updated: 21 October 2026

A rolled chair mat arrives as a tube, the rim stays up, and someone trips. That is a usual first day with clear PVC, not proof of a unique fault. This is how to lay a chair mat so the smooth face is down, the corners are weighted, and you know when waiting has turned into a return. The products are on the [floor protection mat comparison](/hub/flooring/floor-protection-mat). Which sheet to buy is on the [best floor protection mat](/hub/flooring/floor-protection-mat/sub/floor-protection-mat-best) page. Timings come from Floortex's UK FAQ, Deflecto's unroll notes, and the amazon.co.uk reviews. We did not time a mat in a lab. Get the mat warm before you unroll it

Vinyl that has sat in a cold van stays curled. Floortex says let the mat reach room temperature first. Deflecto's notes put a warm room at about one to two hours of handling, then a longer settle. Bring the roll into the room where it will live. Do not take a hairdryer to the sheet. That marks PVC. If the room itself regularly sits under about 15°C, you have a material problem as well as a laying problem. Floortex points cold rooms towards polycarbonate, which is the subject of the PVC or polycarbonate chair mat page. WASJOYE, SHAREWIN, AS, and some Marvelux copies arrive rolled. BesWin reviews more often say the mat lay flat.

Smooth side down on a hard floor

On a hard floor the smooth face goes down and the textured face goes up, so the chair has something to roll on and the floor has something that grips without studs. A Marvelux review says smooth side down. Floortex's FAQ says the same for its own mats: textured side up, smooth or grippers down. Studs are for carpet, and a stud on wood or laminate can scratch the finish you are trying to keep. Sweep first. Grit under a clear sheet becomes a scratch once the chair rolls. If you are about to lay the sheet on carpet, stop. The clear mats here say they are not for carpet. Check the size against the roll of the chair before you commit to a corner. A SHAREWIN is 75 × 120 cm. If the rear castors will live off the edge, careful laying will not fix the size.

Weight the corners and wait

Unroll away from the furniture, then slide the mat into place rather than dragging a corner across a dry joint. Put a book or a similar flat weight on each corner. WASJOYE's listing tells you to weight the corners because the mat is delivered rolled. Deflecto's notes often talk about 12 to 24 hours once the room is warm. Floortex allows up to 72 hours. Do not call a cold evening a failure. Stay off the raised rim while you wait. A WASJOYE review describes a trip on an edge that stayed up. If you must use the desk, roll the chair on from the flat middle. BesWin owners more often report a mat that lay flat on engineered wood. One buyer still got a curling copy, so do not treat often flat as a promise.

If it will not stay down

Give a warm room about 72 hours, with the weights still on the corners. If the rim can still catch a shoe, that copy is past a laying fault. SHAREWIN reviews describe ends that keep curling, not a curl that left after one night. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods should be of satisfactory quality and as described. The short-term right to reject is generally 30 days. Say what you did: room temperature, smooth face down, weights, and how many days. A wrong size is a buying error. A mat that will not lie flat after three warm days is the case that 30-day right is for. Check the listing before you cut. A cut mat is hard to return.

Common questions

How long should you weight the corners?
Weight all four corners. In a warm room, Deflecto's guidance is often 12 to 24 hours. Floortex allows up to 72 hours. Start the clock when the mat is at room temperature, not when you cut the parcel tape in a cold porch. Keep people off any edge that is still raised.
Does a cold room slow it down?
Yes. PVC stays curled when it is cold, which is why both maker guides start with warmth. A hallway that never really heats will fight you. Rooms that sit under about 15°C are also the rooms Floortex steers away from PVC entirely, towards a rigid sheet. Laying technique does not fix that.
What if it is still curled after three days?
Stop adding books. If you have had it at room temperature, smooth side down, for about 72 hours and the rim still trips you, contact the seller inside the 30-day window in the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Describe the steps you took. You are asking for a remedy because that copy will not do the job, not because every rolled mat is faulty on day one.
Can you cut a chair mat to fit?
Check the listing before you cut. Floortex says not to cut its mats if you want the warranty. These Amazon listings do not all say the same thing, and a cut sheet is difficult to send back. If the mat is simply too big for an alcove, measure twice and accept that the return gets harder the moment the knife goes in.
How do you clean it once it is down?
Wipe it. Marvelux specifies warm soapy water. WASJOYE, AS, and BesWin are wipe-clean on their listings. Lift grit rather than grinding it under the castors. Do not flood the edge where the mat meets a laminate joint. A textile mat such as the Homcomodar is the one with a machine-wash line, and it is not this PVC routine.
