Floor protection mat for a home gym

Updated: 21 October 2026

The treadmill lives on the laminate, and the floor takes the feet and the place you step off. A floor protection mat for a home gym is either a thick sheet larger than that footprint or tiles across the bay, not the 2 mm chair mat from the desk. Measure first, then decide whether the AbiHaven rectangle is big enough. The listings and prices are on the [floor protection mat comparison](/hub/flooring/floor-protection-mat). Sizes are the amazon.co.uk figures. Decathlon's size guide is the outside check. We did not measure your machine, and we are not quoting a noise reduction. Measure the machine before the mat

Put a tape on the treadmill or the bike as it stands, including the uprights and the feet, then add the floor you actually occupy. A rule of thumb, and only a rule of thumb: the mat should extend past the feet you stand on, not only past the rubber pads under the frame. If you step off to the side to change the speed, that strip is part of the footprint. Decathlon lists equipment mats at about 55 × 55 cm, 70 × 110 cm, and 100 × 200 cm, and points the large size at treadmills. A 100 × 200 cm sheet is a different object from 152 × 76 cm. Use the floor protection mat buying guide if the tape says you needed a chair mat. The clear chair mats here are about 0.2 cm, and they are too thin under a treadmill.

A 6 mm sheet, and the 152 × 76 cm limit

The AbiHaven TMM01 is black PVC, 152 × 76 cm, 6 mm, 2 kg, at £21.99, with a stated load of 150 kg. It is 4.0 from nine reviews. Two say it misses a normal treadmill. One says it only just fits an exercise bike. Others call it the right size, and quieter, which is a comment with no decibel figure. If the machine and the standing area fit inside 152 × 76 cm with a margin, this is the sheet in the set. If the belt is longer than 152 cm, it is the wrong rectangle. The how to lay a chair mat page will not lengthen a short sheet.

Tiles when the whole floor is the gym

Buy tiles when the gym is the bay, not one machine. The Flatro-FM150 is six EVA tiles, 60 × 60 × 1 cm, at £22.99, listed as 24 square feet, with the United Kingdom as country of origin. It is 4.0 from 30 reviews. People cut them for a shed or a gym, and they also say the joints come apart. One larger order arrived short. The REALIKE pack is twelve 60 cm tiles with 24 borders, at £44.99 and 4.4 from 311 reviews, used in lofts, garages, and under a pool. The specification says 12.7 mm and UK reviews put the tiles nearer 9 mm. Joints can open. Choose the REALIKE for a larger bay if you accept the thinner foam. Choose the Flatro if a consistent 1 cm matters more than coverage.

What these mats do not do

They do not give you a castor glide. A chair on EVA joints will find the seam. They do not publish a noise figure we can repeat. They are not fireproof. GOV.UK guidance on fire risk treats foam exercise mats as fuel in a hall or a gym, and domestic use in a house is not that duty. Mats of this sort sit outside the 1988 furniture fire regulations. Keep them away from a heater. That is not a fire certificate. Call a floor fitter when a new floor's warranty bans a covering, or when the boards still mark under a sheet that is already larger than the footprint. If your measurement is larger than 152 × 76 cm, you need a bigger sheet than the AbiHaven.

Common questions

How big should a treadmill mat be?
Larger than the machine plus the floor you stand on. As a rule of thumb, include the step-off at the sides, not only the rubber feet. Decathlon points treadmills towards a mat about 100 × 200 cm. The AbiHaven is 152 × 76 cm. If your numbers are bigger than that rectangle, this listing is short.
Is 6 mm enough under a walking pad?
It is the thickness of the AbiHaven, and it is in the same band as the Decathlon equipment mats at about 6 mm. It is enough only when the pad's footprint fits the 152 × 76 cm sheet with a margin. Six millimetres will not compensate for a mat that is shorter than the deck. A 2 mm chair mat is thinner again and is the wrong product.
Can you use a chair mat under a bike?
You can, and you will have a thin PVC sheet that is usually too small and too flexible for the feet and the flywheel. The clear mats here are about 0.2 cm and are shaped for castors. One AbiHaven review says that 6 mm sheet only just fitted an exercise bike. Measure the bike first, then decide. Do not start from the desk mat because it is already in the house.
Are tiles or one sheet the better buy?
A sheet is for one machine, if the rectangle covers it. Tiles are for the bay you stand on. The AbiHaven is the sheet. Flatro and REALIKE are the tiles. Tiles that open at the joints will not protect the line under the seam, which is the complaint in both tile files.
Are the REALIKE tiles as thick as the advert?
UK reviews say nearer 9 mm. The specification says 12.7 mm, the bullets say 1.37 cm, and another dimension says 1.1 cm. Those figures cannot all be the tile in your hand. Buy the pack for the area and the 4.4 from 311 reviews, not for a half-inch of foam.
