Paving jointing compound

Updated: October 2026

You are about to buy a colour for a patio, a path or a block drive, and the amazon.co.uk title is already talking about buff or basalt. A paving jointing compound only earns its place when the narrowest gap, the paving type and the drainage match the bag. This guide is that order, before brand names. The ten shelf prices, star lines and pack weights sit on the [paving joint compound comparison](/hub/flooring-tools-and-accessories/paving-joint-compound). Prices are the amazon.co.uk capture held in this comparison. Peter F. did not lab-test these bags. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Measure the joint before you open a tub

Measure the narrowest gap, not the widest one beside the step. A chamfer makes the mouth look wider than the straight throat, and a compound sized for that flare sits on the face. Check a cut edge and the run under a downpipe, because one generous gap does not set the bag. Sika’s January 2026 sheet asks for at least 25 mm of fill. Bostik’s UK sheet, TDS02249, 25 April 2025, asks for at least 25 mm, or 20 mm on a permeable mortar bed, and it excludes a V-shaped joint. A 3 mm block joint and a 12 mm flag joint are different purchases. If a corner rocks when you stand on it, no bag here will lock the unit.

Two families, not one best bag

The useful split is about 2–5 mm against about 5 mm and wider. Sika setting sand, buff, 20 kg (B01JYXFRFG) is £21.99, with 4.2 from 2,591 reviews, swept in dry and then misted. Bostik all weather, basalt, 15 kg (B0F2THZPTT) is £39.35, with 4.4 from 46 reviews, for permeable joints of 5–30 mm on paving you have already wetted. A 3 mm throat is too tight for Bostik. Flags at 15 mm are too wide for Sika. Sika’s surface guide points setting sand at block paving and a flowable grout at porcelain. Those other products are not rows here. Bostik needs a free-draining site, and both sheets bar a laying temperature of +5 °C or below. Which listing is the top pick is on best paving jointing compound.

When the listing and the sheet disagree

The Bostik bullets mention driveways, and the compatible-material field includes block paving. The UK sheet says this compound is not suitable for block paving, driveways or constant immersion. When the page and the sheet disagree, follow the sheet. A 4.4 from 46 reviews is a real sample for a patio brush-in. It is not a driveway approval the sheet has already withdrawn. A dry Saturday can still be the wrong day if the forecast turns, because rain softens an unset brush-in and a jet can empty setting sand. The two sequences are on how to apply paving jointing compound. Match a colour only after the sheet still allows the surface you have.

What a weak listing cannot tell you

Dansand No Grow, dark, 20 kg (B09SH3FTC6) is £32.72 with 4.0 from 96 reviews that both say it set overnight and say it never set. No joint width is stated. Kerama grey states joints up to 10 mm at £39.99, with no reviews, which does not prove a 3 mm porcelain joint. Rock-Tite at £34.99 gives neither a width nor a review. Mainbrick’s 5.0 is one review and no text, at £41.80 for 15 kg. Joint-it Simple is £155.58 with United States reviews. NVBFOL at £7.99 is about 100 g in the only review. If the units rock or the base holds water, call a professional.

Common questions

What joint width should I measure, and do I include the chamfer?
Measure the narrowest straight part of the joint, not the chamfer. Check cut edges, because one wide gap does not choose the bag. Sika’s January 2026 sheet wants 2–5 mm and at least 25 mm deep. Bostik’s sheet wants 5–30 mm and at least 25 mm, or 20 mm on a permeable bed, and it excludes a V-shaped joint.
Is a brush-in tub right for 2–5 mm block paving?
Not the Bostik tub in this set. Its listing and its UK sheet both start at 5 mm, and the sheet also says the compound is not for block paving. The block product here is Sika setting sand, specified for 2–5 mm, swept in dry and then misted. A ready-mixed paste for wider joints will bridge a tight block joint and sit on the face.
Why do the Bostik bullets mention driveways if the UK sheet excludes them?
The amazon.co.uk bullets mention driveways and block paving. Bostik’s UK sheet TDS02249, 25 April 2025, says the compound is not suitable for block paving, driveways or constant immersion. Use the sheet. A 4.4 from 46 reviews does not cancel that exclusion.
Does the compound still cure if the base holds water?
An air-curing brush-in stops curing when the joint stays wet, and Bostik requires a free-draining site. Setting sand is outside its sheet if rain is imminent or the temperature is +5 °C or below. A puddle after a normal shower means the base is the job, not the bag.
Is a 5.0 from one review stronger than 4.2 from 2,591?
No. Mainbrick Easy Joint shows 5.0 from one review and no written text in this file. Sika setting sand shows 4.2 from 2,591 reviews at £21.99. One perfect star with no sentences cannot tell you whether the joint set, stained or washed out. Prefer a stated width and a UK review count you can actually read over a lone five-star line.
Is the £7.99 NVBFOL tub a patio pack?
No. The listing weight is 1 g, and the only review describes a mini tub of about 100 g. The bullets name patios, paths and porcelain, which a pot that size cannot cover. A 20 kg setting-sand bag in this comparison is £21.99. Treat the £7.99 listing as a small repair, and do not plan a whole patio around it.
