How to apply tile stickers

Updated: October 2026

The pack is on the table, the wall is old kitchen tile or painted plasterboard, and you want the film flat. How to apply tile stickers is a clean, dry, level surface, a pencil line, and a backing you peel a little at a time. Know the order, the mistakes that waste a sheet, and when to stop for a tiler or a landlord. This page does not rank packs. The table is the [tile stickers comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/tile-stickers). Matching the sheet to the tile is the [buying guide](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/tile-stickers/sub/tile-stickers-buying-guide). This page is from the Products Compared editorial team. Prepare a flat, dry surface

Existing ceramic is a fair surface when it is sound, flat and free of grease. Wash it, wipe with a degreaser that leaves no film, and let it dry. Painted plasterboard can take a sheet if the paint is stuck to the wall. The Moroccan listing is the only one here that states a wait: at least three weeks after painting. That sentence belongs to that seller. It is not a cure time for every pack. Stop if tiles are loose, plaster is blown, or the wall is damp. On a rented wall, pulling a sheet during fitting has taken emulsion in more than one brand’s reviews. Ask first. Deposit detail is on tile stickers for renters. Tools named in reviews and listings are scissors, a plastic card or squeegee, a spirit level, and a pencil. No pack lists grout or extra adhesive.

Line the first row

A clean wall still goes crooked. Mark a level pencil line for the first row and check it with a spirit level, not with the worktop edge. On a 15 cm grid, a small lean on the first sheet is a visible gap by the end of a 1.6 m run. A 30.5 cm gel sheet shows that lean sooner. Dry-fit one row before any adhesive faces the wall. Count the sheets against the width, and decide where the cuts fall. A socket in the middle of a sheet is a cut you plan. If the row needs more than one pack, those packs should be from the same order. A later delivery in this set has arrived a different colour.

Peel, press, cut

Peel the backing a few centimetres, line that strip to the pencil mark and the previous edge, and press it before you free the rest. Thin Tile Style film tears if the backing is snatched off in one go. Reviewers used a plastic card to push air from the centre to the edges. A gel sheet such as WoStick grabs harder. Once it touches, a slide to correct a crooked start can lift paint. If the first contact is wrong, lift immediately and slowly. Cut with scissors around switches and sockets. Amoyun’s listing says to cut around them. A sheet that bridges a socket face is covering a live accessory, and that is where you stop. Leave the screws and the face clear. Cut the last sheet of a row on a flat surface before you stick it. A bubble that returns on a greasy tile is the surface, not trapped air you can chase.

If a sheet lifts

A lifted corner the next morning is a missed press or a wall that will not hold. Press the edge again with the card on a clean, dry tile, and watch it for a day. If it lifts again, the tile is still greasy, damp, or too textured for that adhesive. Sealant and extra glue appear in reviews, including a Hode sheet finished around a boxed-in toilet, and Amoyun glue that ripped paint. Those are reviewer repairs. They are not in the pack. If the edge lifted beside a hob or a kettle, stop adding sheets there. Warm-kitchen peel is a splashback limit on the kitchen splashback page. Repositioning is when reviews lost emulsion. Call a tiler when tiles are loose, the wall is wet, or the hob needs a real splashback. Leave electrics to an electrician rather than filming a socket.

Common questions

Can I stick these on existing ceramic tiles?
Yes, when the tiles are sound, flat, clean and dry. Listings here name ceramic tile, and Tile Style also names wood, plasterboard, flat painted walls, plastic, metal, glass and flat stone, while ruling out floor tiles.
How do I stop air bubbles in a thin film?
Line the sheet up, peel the backing a little at a time, and push air out with a plastic card from the middle to the edges. Snatching the whole backing off a Tile Style sheet is how reviewers tore the film.
Should I peel the whole backing off first?
Peel a short strip, align it, press it, then continue. A full peel lets a thin sheet stretch before it touches, which is the tear on Tile Style film.
How do I cut around a socket?
Mark the plate and cut the film with scissors so the sheet stops short of the socket. Leave the screws and the face clear.
How soon after painting can I stick them?
The only stated wait in this set is on the Moroccan listing: at least three weeks after painting. Other packs do not print that time, so it is not a universal rule, and fresh emulsion is still a poor same-day surface.
What if a corner lifts the next day?
Press it once more with a card on a clean, dry surface. If it stays, it was a missed edge.
