How to use metal adhesive, on steel or aluminium, is mostly what you do before the tube touches the metal, and how long you wait afterwards. Dirt, oil, and paint are part of the failure, and so is loading the part at the first number on the title. Clean metal is part of the product

Take off dirt, grease, oil, paint, and loose rust, then roughen bare metal. Degrease after you abrade, because sanding can smear oil back across the face. CTA’s UK prep note uses a water-film check: if water beads, oil is still there. Putty over a glossy coating is stuck to the paint, not to the steel. The same limit applies to cyanoacrylate and to the crystal-clear cartridge. If the part is a leak you cannot isolate, or a joint on brakes, steering, or fuel, stop.

Putty, liquid, gel, and cartridge are applied differently

SteelStik is a stick. Cut, knead until the two colours become one, and press it in. Streaks mean it is not mixed. The maker’s set is about 3 to 5 minutes, so wear gloves. LAWEZX needs no mix. Use a thin film on a close fit and hold the faces. A puddle in a gap you can see is the wrong tool, which is the point of epoxy vs super glue for metal. One UK review needed an activation spray for metal to wood, and that spray is not in the LAWEZX pack. FresFresi is a gel with a pin in the cap: pierce, apply, and replace the pin. Stixall needs a sealant gun, which is not in the box. It is a seven-day cure, not a grab you load at lunchtime.

Wait for the pack’s full cure

Set and full cure are different clocks. LAWEZX’s 45-second bullet is not the 24-hour full cure. You can stop holding a small close fit long before you hang weight on it. Loctite’s epoxy example, clamp about 10 minutes and wait 24 hours, is a different product. Do not copy that clock onto SteelStik, whose listing and maker sheet both say 1 hour. Stixall skins in 10 minutes and reaches full cure in 7 days. FresFresi’s field says 24 hours and a bullet says 24–48 hours. JOYAONE prints no cure time. Do not invent one.

Skin, eyes, and the jobs you do not glue

Cyanoacrylate bonds skin and eyes in seconds, which is why GB CLP requires EUH202 on the immediate packaging. If you glue a finger, do not pull the skin apart. For eyes, seek help. HSE sheet SR22 says solvent vapours can cause headache and dermatitis, and more than about 30 minutes a day at work points to local exhaust. Do not use these packs as a weld, and do not glue brakes, steering, suspension, or seat-belt anchors. If the pack in your hand is the blue bottle, follow the threadlocker steps instead.

Common questions

How do I prepare metal before adhesive?
Remove dirt, grease, oil, paint, and loose rust, then roughen bare metal with a file or coarse sandpaper and degrease again. If water beads, oil is still on the face. Bonding over a glossy coat sticks the adhesive to the paint. UK SteelStik reviews tie a poor bond to skipped prep, including the wire-brush step on rust.
How do I mix a putty stick?
Cut the amount you need from SteelStik and knead until the two colours are one uniform colour. Streaks mean it is not mixed. Press it firmly into the repair. The maker’s set is about 3 to 5 minutes, so shape it straight away. Gloves help, because reviews mention smell and putty on skin. The listing cure is 1 hour.
How long until I can load the joint?
Wait for the full cure on that pack, not the first number. SteelStik is 1 hour on the listing and the maker sheet. Stixall is 7 days after a 10-minute skin. LAWEZX’s 45-second bullet is not the 24-hour full cure. FresFresi is 24 hours on the field and 24–48 hours in the bullet. JOYAONE prints no time.
What if I glue my fingers?
Do not pull the skin apart. Cyanoacrylates bond skin and eyelids in seconds, which is why EUH202 belongs on the immediate packaging. Follow the pack. A LAWEZX review quoted tiny print about warm soapy water. If glue is in an eye, seek help. Do not use a kitchen experiment as treatment.
Why is my super glue still tacky?
A thick film, a gap, cold metal, or a pack with no stated cure will stay soft. LAWEZX should reach the listing’s 24-hour full cure even if it skins much sooner, and it can run and sit on the surface. JOYAONE has no cure time, and several UK reviews say it never dried hard. More glue rarely fixes a joint that needed putty.
Can I put the pack on paint or oil?
You can, and the bond will be to the paint or the oil film, not to the metal. SteelStik’s directions tell you to clean those off and roughen first. The same limit applies to the liquid, the gel, and the cartridge. A waterproof claim does not change that, and the crystal-clear Stixall bullet still says that colour is not for exterior use.
