Epoxy vs super glue for metal

Updated: 23 October 2026

Epoxy vs super glue for metal is mostly a question about the gap, not about which title says strong. If you can see through the joint, or a piece of metal is missing, super glue is the pack that fails. If the faces already meet and you can hold them, putty is the slow tool. The six listings are compared on the [metal adhesive comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/metal-adhesive). This page is only the putty-versus-cyanoacrylate choice. The gap decides before the brand

Super glue locks a thin film between two faces that touch. Permabond 910, not one of these listings, states a maximum gap of about 0.15 mm. A hairline you have to look for can be a super-glue joint. A crack you can see is not. Loctite’s UK guide says the same: super glue for a small close fit, epoxy when the work is larger, heavier, or gapped. A trade claim of about 0.5 mm for industrial gels is not a rating for FresFresi or LAWEZX. If the metal is missing, you need putty you can file, not a bigger drop. The wider tree is the metal adhesive buying guide.

Heat, peel, and what stronger does not mean

Epoxy is not always stronger. A close-fitting cyanoacrylate can hold a small part that putty would only bulk out. SteelStik’s 4,000 PSI is the tensile rating of the cured putty, not your joint and not a weld. A thick film is brittle in peel. Putty fails the other way when the load changes. A flexing joint wants a different chemistry. The maker figure for SteelStik is about 177°C continuous, and an exhaust is hotter. An exhaust line on the amazon.co.uk description is not a clearance. LAWEZX and FresFresi print no degree figure. Cold slows cyanoacrylate. That does not crown either chemistry.

Where the listings in this set sit

SteelStik is the putty: 57 g at about £6.79, full cure 1 hour. You knead it to one colour. It is not a liquid syringe. LAWEZX at about £7.58 is the cyanoacrylate, with a 45-second bullet and a 24-hour full cure. The title names metal and the field says plastic. Use it only for a close fit you can hold. FresFresi, three 15 ml tubes at about £4.89, lists metal beside glass, leather, and plastic, and it states no gap. JOYAONE at about £9.49 has no cure time. A brush does not move it onto the epoxy side. Leave the Stixall cartridge out of this choice.

When epoxy, when super glue

Use super glue when the metal already meets and you can hold it. In this set that is LAWEZX, with the plastic-only field read first, or FresFresi for a small clear craft bond. Use SteelStik when you can see the gap or the metal is missing, then leave it for the hour on the pack. Expert Reviews say super glue works better on brass and copper than on steel. That is their report. Skip both if the joint flexes, if the part is an exhaust, or if you are about to glue a thread.

Common questions

Is epoxy stronger than super glue on metal?
Not as a blanket rule. On a tight, clean fit, cyanoacrylate can hold a small part that putty would only bulk. Across a gap you can see, super glue has almost no strength, and putty is the tool that can fill. SteelStik’s 4,000 PSI is the cured putty’s tensile rating, not the strength of your joint and not a weld.
Can a gel super glue fill a hole?
Not a hole in metal. FresFresi does not print a gap rating, and a trade claim of about 0.5 mm for industrial gels does not belong to this tube. A hole or a missing lug needs mouldable putty. The gel is a craft film for small parts, with metal as one line in a long substrate list, at about £4.89 for three 15 ml tubes.
What gap is too big for cyanoacrylate?
About 0.15 mm is the maximum gap fill stated for Permabond 910, a metal-intended cyanoacrylate that is not in this set. If you can see the gap, you are past that film. LAWEZX and JOYAONE do not print a gap of their own. Do not assign them a larger figure because a gel looks thicker in the nozzle.
Is SteelStik the same as a liquid epoxy?
No. It is a putty stick you knead to one colour, with a set of about 3 to 5 minutes and a 1-hour cure on the listing and the maker sheet. A liquid epoxy is mixed from two parts and usually clamped. Loctite’s 24-hour epoxy example is that other product. Use the stick when you need to rebuild a shape, not when you only need a hairline film.
Why did my metal super glue stay tacky?
A thick layer, a gap, or a pack that never states a cure will stay soft. LAWEZX’s 45-second claim is not the 24-hour full cure, and the liquid runs. JOYAONE prints no cure time, and several of its 12 UK reviews say it stayed tacky. Metal to wood may also need an activator that LAWEZX does not include.
Which is better in the cold or on an exhaust?
Neither listing here is an exhaust repair. SteelStik’s maker figure is about 177°C continuous, and an exhaust is outside that band. Super glue does not gain heat resistance by being thin. Cold and damp push FresFresi toward the 48-hour end of its bullet and slow cyanoacrylate. For an exhaust, stop and use a repair that is specified for that heat.
Does super glue work better on some metals than others?
Expert Reviews say it works better on reactive metals such as brass and copper than on steel. That is their report. Bare, tight-fitting steel can still bond if you hold it and keep the film thin. Painted, oily, or gapped steel will not, whichever metal the title lists. LAWEZX’s own page conflicts: the title says metal and the field says plastic.
