Metal adhesive buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a rusty steel bracket, a bolt that keeps backing off, or a hairline crack, and amazon.co.uk is showing putty, a clear cartridge, a blue bottle, and super glue at once. A metal adhesive buying guide starts with the job, because a high star rating on the wrong chemistry will not hold the repair. This page sorts threadlocker, epoxy putty, cyanoacrylate, craft gel, and hybrid sealant before you compare the six listings on the [metal adhesive comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/metal-adhesive). Shelf prices in this comparison sit between about £4.89 and £9.49. A qualifying purchase through our amazon.co.uk links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the job, not the star rating

Five chemistries cover almost every household metal job, and they are not substitutes. An anaerobic threadlocker cures when you shut air out of a metal thread. Epoxy putty is what you knead into a hole or a broken lug and then file. Cyanoacrylate is for a close fit you can hold together. A craft gel lists metal among glass, leather, and fabric. A hybrid cartridge grabs, fills a gap, and is sold as waterproof, which is a sealant job rather than a locker. Match the pack to the job before you sort by stars. If the fastener is the whole problem, go to threadlocker for metal bolts. Loctite’s UK consumer guide draws the same split, and it does not rank these six listings.

Gap, heat, and whether you must undo it

Gap is stricter than a strong claim on a title. Permabond 910, a metal-intended cyanoacrylate that is not one of these listings, states a maximum gap of about 0.15 mm. If you can see daylight through the joint, that film has nothing to bridge. Do not read a trade gel figure of about 0.5 mm onto a craft tube that does not print a gap. An exhaust sits outside the bands published here. J-B Weld’s figure for SteelStik is about 177°C continuous for the cured putty, not a manifold repair. Sika’s crystal-clear Stixall sheet stops at +70°C. LOCTITE 243, a different product from the Vigorder bottle, is published at about −55°C to 180°C. Colour is a maker convention, not a British Standard. High-strength red grades may need localised heat above about 250°C, which is not for a fuel fitting or a brake line.

How the six listings map onto that tree

These six are examples of the branches, not a second ranking. SteelStik, 57 g at about £6.79, is the top pick for a hole you can file and the wrong pack for a thread. Stixall Crystal Clear, 290 ml at about £7.46, cures in 7 days and this colour is not for exterior use. Sika’s sheet says STP and F-INT, while the material field says polyurethane. Vigorder, 50 ml at about £7.99, is metal fasteners only, with no breakaway torque. LAWEZX at about £7.58 names metal in the title and plastic in the field. FresFresi is three 15 ml tubes at about £4.89. JOYAONE at about £9.49 is 3.0 from 12 reviews. Named picks are on best metal adhesive.

What a small branded tube still gets wrong

A lower price outside this set does not fix a wrong chemistry. Expert Reviews publishes a 5 g Loctite super glue around £1.70 and Gorilla Epoxy around £6. About £4.89 for FresFresi is the lowest shelf price at 4.0 or above that is not the top pick, which is why it is the best value here. That does not make it the best value for a steel hole.

Common questions

Which metal adhesive do I buy for a hole, a bolt, or a tight joint?
Buy epoxy putty for a hole or a missing lug, a medium-strength threadlocker for a metal bolt, and cyanoacrylate only for a tight fit you can hold. In this set that is SteelStik at about £6.79, Vigorder at about £7.99, and LAWEZX at about £7.58 with the plastic-only field conflict stated. A hybrid cartridge is the indoor flex-and-seal option, not the locker. Stars come after that choice.
Does super glue work on metal if I can see a gap?
No. A visible gap is already past the about 0.15 mm maximum published for a metal-intended cyanoacrylate such as Permabond 910. Super glue needs two faces in contact. If you can see through the joint, or the metal is missing, use epoxy or putty and leave the cyanoacrylate for a hairline fit.
Is a threadlocker a metal glue?
It locks a metal fastener by curing when air is shut out of the threads. It is not a glue for a bracket, a hole, or a plastic thread. The Vigorder listing says metal fasteners only, 20 minutes initial and 24 hours full, and it prints no breakaway torque. Putty and Stixall do not replace it in the threads.
Can crystal-clear Stixall go on outdoor metal?
The amazon.co.uk bullet for this colour says it is not suitable for exterior use. Sika’s current sheet is STP with a declaration line F-INT, and the stated band is −40°C to +70°C. UK reviews do describe outdoor jobs, including rain, but those reviews do not override the bullet on this cartridge. Choose another colour or another product if the metal lives outside.
Does a high PSI figure mean my repair is that strong?
No. SteelStik’s 4,000 PSI is the tensile rating of the cured putty on the maker’s test, not the strength of the joint on your bracket. Oil, paint, a flexing load, or a short cure will drop the repair far below that number. Read it as a property of the stick, then judge the job by gap, prep, and whether the part moves.
When should I stop and call a professional?
Stop for brakes, steering, suspension, and seat-belt anchors, for gas or any pressurised system you cannot isolate, and for a repair that is being sold as a weld on a load path. A comparison of household adhesives cannot clear those jobs. If you are at work and the safety data sheet shows diisocyanates at or above 0.1 percent, the training duty is a workplace rule, not a line on the cartridge title.
