Water-based vs hybrid grab adhesive

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are choosing between a No More Nails-type tube and a cartridge that says Seriously Strong Stuff, and both say solvent-free and instant. They do not cure the same way. Water-based acrylic dries because water leaves the paste, so one face has to be porous. Hybrid SMP cures with moisture and is sold for damp faces and for pairs that do not breathe. Prices are amazon.co.uk figures from 19 October 2026. We did not run a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Same slogan, two cures

Solvent-free describes what is absent. It does not name the cure. UniBond No More Nails Original is a water-based copolymer. Henkel’s cartridge sheet, UC4000, dated 17 April 2026, says it dries by evaporation, needs a porous face, and is for interior dry service. Application starts from +10°C. Evo-Stik Seriously Strong Stuff is the hybrid: up to 300 kg/m² after 15 minutes, full strength after 24 hours, and a damp-surface claim that is not running water. A Wickes-hosted sheet adds about −40°C to +100°C in service, application from +5°C to +30°C, and a warning against polyethylene, polypropylene and PTFE. Up to 8 kg unsupported after 15 minutes is a different claim from 300 kg/m². The fast-set floor is +5°C, not below freezing. The 151 exterior three-pack does not name SMP. Do not file it as this hybrid. Solvent rubber sits with the other chemistries on the grab adhesive buying guide.

When the acrylic is the right paste

Use the water-based acrylic on a dry, absorbent interior face. Bare plaster, bare plasterboard and unfinished timber are the usual cases. In this set that paste is UniBond No More Nails Original, about £9.86 for two 280 ml cartridges, rated 4.6 from 421 reviews. The listing says water resistant, not waterproof, and gives a 24-hour field. Skip it when both faces are sealed, outside, or for a mirror: Henkel’s sheet excludes mirrors. A bath edge wants sanitary silicone. On bare plaster, buy this pack and pin a long or sprung board. The hybrid’s review file is smaller on that wall. Pinning detail stays on grab adhesive for skirting boards. Painted plaster has left the acrylic’s job.

When the hybrid is the right paste

Use the hybrid when a face is sealed, damp or outside, and the listing you buy says so. In this set that is Evo-Stik Seriously Strong Stuff, about £6.49 for 290 ml, rated 4.5 from 117 reviews. The bullets name plastics, metal, glass and mirrors, and they say damp surfaces and waterproof. Reviewers report a mirror on tile and plastic on metal after other pastes failed. Several packs arrived with no nozzle. One reviewer found about 15 minutes a short window, and another said the bond stayed flexible. Rubber to rubber did not bond. Full strength on the brand page is 24 hours. On dry bare plaster the acrylic is the better match. Uncured residue is scraped off, then cleaned with white spirit. Keep that spirit off polystyrene. UniBond’s page names polystyrene mouldings; do not assume every hybrid is a foam adhesive.

The figures that are not the same test

Fifteen minutes, 24 hours, 300 kg/m² and 8 kg answer different questions. Fifteen minutes on the Evo-Stik page is an early hold, stated as 300 kg/m² by the maker’s method, and separately as up to 8 kg unsupported on a Wickes-hosted sheet. Twenty-four hours on that page is full strength. Henkel quotes 240–280 kg/m² initial tack and 5–6 N/mm² final strength to DIN EN 205 for the acrylic. Those units are not interchangeable with the Evo-Stik figures. Amazon’s 15-minute full-cure field drops the 24-hour line. The 151 packs are a different comparison. Dry interior skirting on bare plaster: the UniBond two-pack, and still support a heavy board. Sealed, damp or outdoor faces: Seriously Strong Stuff, with a nozzle in the gun and the same support.

Common questions

Is No More Nails Original a hybrid?
No. UniBond No More Nails Original is a water-based acrylic. It dries by evaporation and needs one porous face. Henkel’s cartridge sheet places it on interior dry service. Seriously Strong Stuff is the hybrid SMP in this set. Both are sold as solvent-free grab adhesive. The shared slogan hides the cure, which is why a sealed wall behaves differently under each tube.
Which one sticks to plastic or gloss?
The hybrid is the one sold for non-porous faces. Evo-Stik’s bullets name plastics, PVC, metal and glass, and a review describes plastic on metal after other grab pastes failed. The acrylic needs one porous face. Gloss against plastic gives that water nowhere to go. Neither paste is specified for polyethylene, polypropylene or PTFE. The Wickes-hosted Evo-Stik sheet names those three as exclusions.
Which one can go outside?
Seriously Strong Stuff. The listing says interior and exterior, damp surfaces and waterproof, at about £6.49 for 290 ml. UniBond No More Nails Original is interior, and the listing says water resistant, not waterproof. Damp does not mean a saturated wall or running water. The 151 exterior pack is a separate listing and is not identified as this hybrid. Application for the Evo-Stik fast-set sheet starts at +5°C, not below freezing.
Why does one listing say 15 minutes and another say 24 hours?
They are different points on the Evo-Stik clock, and Amazon prints only one of them. The brand page says up to 300 kg/m² after 15 minutes and full strength after 24 hours. The amazon.co.uk full-cure field says 15 minutes. Henkel’s acrylic is a separate product at 24–48 hours. Wait for the longer figure before you load the joint, and prop a heavy piece in the meantime.
Which should I buy for one room of skirting on bare plaster?
Buy the water-based acrylic. In this set that is UniBond No More Nails Original at about £9.86 for two cartridges, with one porous face and a 24-hour field. Prop or pin a long or sprung board. Buy Seriously Strong Stuff instead if the plaster is painted shut, damp, or you are fixing to a non-porous face. The hybrid does not remove that support. It changes the cure, not the peel on a bowed board.
