Grab adhesive for skirting boards

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are fitting MDF or softwood skirting to plaster or plasterboard, and the cartridge says you will not need nails. A short, flat, light board on a sound wall can stay on paste alone. A long board that is slightly sprung, or a wall that is dusty or painted shut, comes away at the ends overnight. Bead size sits on [how to apply grab adhesive](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/grab-adhesive/sub/grab-adhesive-how-to-apply). What the paste is doing

Grab adhesive along the back of a board is strong in shear, when the weight tries to slide the board down the wall. It is weaker in peel, when a bowed board tries to pull its ends off the plaster. BuildWiz makes that distinction, and it is trade practice, not a British Standard. A pin or a prop stops the peel while the paste cures. Adhesive alone is reasonable when the wall is flat and sound, the board is light and not sprung, and you can press it fully home. Checkatrade’s note draws the same line. If any one of those fails, plan a mechanical help before you open the cartridge. A hollow dot-and-dab wall or loose plaster is a carpenter’s job. Stay with an interior solvent-free acrylic unless the wall itself forces a different chemistry.

Which paste for a dry wall

On bare plaster or bare plasterboard, an interior solvent-free acrylic is the match, because one face is porous and the paste can dry. In this set that is UniBond No More Nails Original, two 280 ml cartridges at about £9.86, rated 4.6 from 421 reviews. Henkel’s sheet names skirting and says heavy or distorted pieces may need extra fixings. The other interior option is the 151 Hard As Nails three-pack at about £7.18, rated 4.6 from 302 reviews. The bullets name skirting, architrave and plasterboard, with one porous surface, and they say the paste dries white and can be painted when dry. Several reviews say the grab was thin and that boards needed screws. The 180 ml tube at about £3.87 is for a short repair, not a room. If paint seals the plasterboard, the water has nowhere to go. Do not switch to classic solvent Gripfill. It is a solvent rubber. If the wall is painted or otherwise non-porous, use the split on water-based vs hybrid grab adhesive.

Pin, prop or both

Press the board so the bead spreads, then decide how it stays there for the cure. A light length on a flat wall can be propped until the next day. A long or sprung length wants pins as well. BuildWiz describes lost-head nails about every 600 mm into studs, or screws and plugs on masonry. Treat 600 mm as that guide’s practice, not as a British Standard. A pin into empty plasterboard only clamps the paper, and a doorway still wants a screw into a stud. Leave the pins or the props until the cartridge’s set time has passed.

The gap along the top

The top edge of skirting is rarely airtight against the plaster. That shadow line is decorator’s caulk, not more grab adhesive and not silicone. Checkatrade separates the jobs: grab adhesive for the board, caulk for the gap, and silicone only as a poor choice because it is hard to paint. If the wall is hollow behind the board, pack it with the paste the listing says can fill minor gaps, and still pin the length. The 151 interior bullets do not give a maximum gap in millimetres. Loose plaster, hollow dot-and-dab, or heavy hardwood is a carpenter’s job.

Common questions

Can I fix skirting with adhesive only?
You can on a flat, sound wall with a light board that is not sprung, if you press it home and leave it undisturbed for the cure, often about 24 hours. A long or bowed board peels off at the ends because the paste is weaker in peel than in shear. Pin or prop those lengths. No more nails on the cartridge is not a promise that nails are never required.
Which grab adhesive for MDF on plasterboard?
Use an interior solvent-free acrylic when the plasterboard face is bare and porous. In this set that is UniBond No More Nails Original at about £9.86, or the 151 interior three-pack at about £7.18 if you will pin as well. The 151 reviews include boards that still needed screws. At a doorway, a screw into a stud is still wise, because the paper face can tear. Painted plasterboard may need a hybrid instead.
What if the wall is painted?
A sealed paint film can stop a water-based acrylic drying, because one face has to be porous. Do not switch to solvent Gripfill on painted plasterboard. If both faces are effectively sealed, buy the paste sold for non-porous faces. Scrape off loose paint either way. A dusty film is enough to make a fresh bead fail.
Do I nail into the studs?
Yes, if you pin. A lost-head nail or a screw wants a stud or a plugged masonry joint, not empty plasterboard. One UK materials guide suggests about every 600 mm. That is practice from that guide, not a British Standard. Props can replace pins on a light, flat length. They have to stay until the paste has set, not until the board first feels tacky.
When do I call a carpenter?
Call one if the plaster is loose, the wall is hollow dot-and-dab, or you are fixing heavy hardwood to an uneven wall. Also call if a previous bead has failed and the board has taken the paper face of the plasterboard with it. Those jobs need the wall made sound, and sometimes a screw pattern, before another cartridge will help.
