How to apply grab adhesive

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a cartridge in a sealant gun, or a screw-cap tube, and the board is already cut. The failure two days later is usually dust, two sealed faces, or a bead so thick it never dries. Clean the faces, cut a modest nozzle, press, then support until the set time on that cartridge. Pressing the board on is the start of the cure, not the end. We used maker notes and the review notes behind the [grab adhesive comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/grab-adhesive). We did not run a lab test. Prepare the two faces

Dust, grease and loose paint are why a thick paste sits on the surface and never keys. Wipe both faces. Scrape flaking paint back to something sound. A water-based acrylic needs one porous face. Gloss against plastic leaves the bead soft. Seriously Strong Stuff is the listing that says it will stick to damp surfaces, which is not water running down the wall. Henkel starts No More Nails Original from +10°C. The Evo-Stik fast-set sheet starts from +5°C. Solvent cartridges from outside this set need ventilation. The Health and Safety Executive tells workplaces to prefer low-solvent products and to ventilate. Do not use a solvent paste on polystyrene. If you are about to glue skirting, decide pin or prop on grab adhesive for skirting boards before the bead.

Cut the nozzle and lay the bead

Pierce the foil seal inside the cartridge. If you skip that, the gun does nothing. Cut the nozzle at an angle. Henkel and Evo-Stik both quote about 11 m from a 5 mm bead on a full cartridge. A very wide cut dumps paste that cannot dry in the middle. Reviewers of the 151 exterior pack found the paste so thick that a small cut would not let it out. Widen only until it flows. For a flat board, a zigzag or dots leave a path for air. Evo-Stik and Soudal both use a zigzag on skirting, then press. For a narrow architrave, one or two beads are enough. Wipe water-based paste with a damp cloth while it is wet. Henkel allows about five minutes to reposition. Evo-Stik’s page says to scrape uncured hybrid residue and then use white spirit. Do not soak finished paint in solvent.

Support it while it sets

Initial grab is the moment the piece stops sliding in your hands. Full strength is later. A 10-second press in one maker’s skirting sequence is a placement step, not a finished joint on a 2.4 m board. A light moulding on sound plaster may stay if you press it and check it. A long board, a bowed MDF length, or anything overhead needs a prop, a pin, or both. Henkel says heavy or distorted items may need extra fixings. Soudal’s note says to block the board and allow about 24 hours. In this set, 151 packs slip until you hold them, and a heavy UniBond piece needed longer support. Paint only when the paste is dry, and only if that cartridge says you can. A skin on a thick bead is not a dry joint.

If the bead stays soft

A bead that is still soft after two days is usually too thick, sitting on two sealed faces, or in a room colder than the sheet allows. The 151 interior reviews include a paste that was still not dry after three days. Scrape a failed bead back to clean faces. Another layer of the same paste will fail the same way if the chemistry is wrong for the wall. Painted gloss against plastic wants the hybrid discussion on water-based vs hybrid grab adhesive. Amazon’s full-cure field on Seriously Strong Stuff says 15 minutes. The brand page says full strength after 24 hours. If the bead is still movable at 15 minutes, you are inside the longer figure. Call a professional for overhead boards you cannot prop safely, for a large mirror, and for loose damp masonry.

Common questions

What size bead should I cut?
Aim for about 5 mm, the bead Henkel and Evo-Stik use when they quote about 11 m from a cartridge. Cut the nozzle at an angle, and pierce the foil first. Widen the cut only if a thick paste will not extrude, which reviewers found on the 151 exterior pack. A much fatter bead stays soft in the middle even when the outside skins over.
How long do I hold it?
Hold or prop until the piece stops creeping, then leave the support in place until the set time on your cartridge. A short press of about 10 seconds is only the placement step in one maker’s skirting sequence. Full strength on these pastes is often 24 hours, and Henkel quotes 24–48 hours for No More Nails Original. A heavy or bowed board needs a pin or a prop for that whole interval.
When can I paint?
Paint when the paste is dry, and only if the cartridge says it is paintable. The 151 interior listing says it dries white and can be painted when dry. It does not give an hour. A surface skin is not dry. Painting over a wet core seals moisture in and leaves a soft line under the colour.
Why is it still soft after two days?
The usual causes are a bead that is too thick, two sealed faces under a water-based paste, or a room colder than the sheet allows. UniBond needs one porous face and starts from +10°C. One 151 interior review was still not dry after three days. Scrape a failed bead off and correct the face or the chemistry. Do not bury it under more paste.
How do I clean wet paste?
Water-based paste wipes off with a damp cloth while it is wet. Once it has cured, you cut or scrape it. For the hybrid, Evo-Stik’s page says to scrape the bulk away and then use white spirit on the residue. Keep solvent off polystyrene and off finished paint you do not want to mark.
