Wood filler or wall filler

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have rubbed a white paste into a door frame, and the stain has flashed a pale patch. If you will stain the timber, use a wood filler and test the colour on a cured patch. If you will paint plaster, or paint over wood, a wall filler that lists wood is enough. The white wood kit in this set is a poor stain match. Both kinds appear on the [filler comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/filler) because both are fillers. Shelf prices are GBP on 19 October 2026. This is not a lab test. Paint and stain are different jobs

Paint hides the filler. Stain shows it. A white paste under a stain on bare oak stays as a light island, because stain soaks into timber and sits on the filler. Ronseal’s wood-filler page says to test stain or paint on a dried scrap, not a whole door. A wall filler that names wood can fill a frame you will gloss. It is the wrong tub on a shelf you will stain. Ronseal says not to use its wood fillers between floorboards. Depth and movement for plaster are the wall filler buying guide.

The wood kit in this set

The Mollor kit, ASIN B0DRJJLV2V, is about £9.99 for 150 g of white water-based wood putty, with a scraper, sandpaper and gloves. The title says stainable. It is 4.3 from 211 reviews. United Kingdom texts say it is easy to sand on wood, and also too thin: it ran down a vertical hole and had barely set after 8 hours. It dries white. The listing says large areas may sink. A small defect you will paint is the job those reviews describe. A stain matched to oak is the job they say it fails. Ronseal’s own wood filler is about 5 mm a layer and sends deeper holes to a two-part filler. That two-part product is not one of these nine.

Wall filler that also says wood

Ronseal smooth finish, ASIN B0046QBRRY, at about £7.24, is for small interior repairs on plaster, stone, concrete and wood. It is 4.5 from 3,894 reviews. The amazon bullets carry no stain line and no depth. Do not copy a deeper figure from Ronseal’s own page onto this ASIN. SikaWall at about £4.49 states 9 mm by 25 mm, and the bullets include paints, wood stains or wallpapers. The sheet says overstainable. That is a coat on white paste, not a match for oak. Palace at about £1.25 is 3 mm layers, a hairline on painted skirting. Its 2,247 reviews are shared with Langlow.

Gaps, rot and two-part filler

Floorboard gaps move, and Ronseal says not to fill them with its wood fillers. Rotten wood is outside this set. Cut a soft sill back to sound timber before any filler goes in. No catalysed two-part filler is in these nine listings. If the wood is sound and you will paint, use the Mollor kit under paint, or a wall tub that lists wood. If you will stain, test a filler sold for stain. Plaster steps are on how to fill cracks in walls. Paste against powder is ready mixed filler or powder.

Common questions

Can I use wall filler on a door frame?
Yes, if you will paint the frame. Ronseal smooth finish at about £7.24 or SikaWall at about £4.49 can fill a small static hole in sound timber under gloss or emulsion. SikaWall is 9 mm by 25 mm. Ronseal’s amazon row states no depth. If you will stain the frame, a white wall paste will flash.
Can I stain wall filler?
You can coat it, and it will usually look like stain on filler, not like stained timber. SikaWall’s listing includes wood stains, and the sheet says overstainable. That is permission to coat it, not a colour match. Test a cured patch. If the patch is a pale block, paint the repair or use a wood filler you have tested.
Is the white wood kit in this set a stain match?
The Mollor kit at about £9.99 is titled stainable, and United Kingdom reviews say it dries white. It is 4.3 from 211 reviews. Reviewers also say it runs on a vertical face and had barely set after 8 hours. Expect the white cure, and test before you stain a whole door. It is a closer buy when you will paint a small defect.
What if I will only paint the wood?
A wall filler that lists wood is enough. Ronseal smooth finish is sold for interior plaster, stone, concrete and wood, and the job is a painted patch. Prime if the filler dries off-white, which reviews mention on more than one tub here. The Mollor kit can sit under paint if you accept that it is thin, white, and may sink on a large area.
Can I fill gaps between floorboards?
Not with these pastes. Ronseal says not to use its wood fillers between floorboards, and the wall fillers here are not better for a gap that moves. A rigid fill cracks when the boards shift. Keep these tubs for static holes in plaster or in timber you will paint.
Is a two-part wood filler in this comparison?
No. Ronseal’s two-part filler, mixed with a catalyst, is a different product, and none of the nine listings is that filler. The Mollor kit is a 150 g water-based putty. Rotten wood and a missing section of timber sit outside this table.
Which wall tubs also say they work on wood?
SikaWall names paints, wood stains or wallpapers, at 9 mm by 25 mm, and it is not water resistant. Ronseal smooth finish names interior wood, with no stain line and no depth on the amazon row. Palace is the 3 mm fine-surface tub. All three are poor stain matches if the cure is white and you have not tested a patch.
