Wall filler buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a crack above a skirting board, or screw holes where a shelf came down, and the amazon.co.uk results all say multi-purpose. That word does not tell you the depth, whether the gap moves, or whether the tub is only for indoors. This wall filler buying guide is the order to use before you open the [filler comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/filler): measure the hole, decide if it is static and dry, then match a stated depth. Shelf prices are in GBP on 19 October 2026. This is not a lab test. A qualifying purchase through our amazon.co.uk links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the hole, not the brand

A filler sits in a static crack, a screw hole or a shallow dent so you can sand and paint. If the gap opens and closes, that is a sealant. If the plaster is hollow or the wall is damp, call a plasterer. UK guides do not agree on one millimetre. One shop guide says about 2 mm for a fine surface. A fine-surface page that is not Palace says about 4 mm in one coat. Use those as a rule of thumb. Polycell’s how-to says the crack should be dry. Open a closed hairline slightly. If a stain might still be damp, stop. The scored shortlist is on best ready mixed filler.

Fine surface, all-purpose and lightweight

Palace, ASIN B07XGMLGRX, states layers of no more than 3 mm, interior, at about £1.25. The water-resistance field says water resistant, and the use line is still interior. SikaWall, ASIN B001323YJ8, states 9 mm deep and 25 mm wide, at about £4.49, interior and exterior, with oil-based paint on an outdoor fix. The water-resistance field says not water resistant. The Decex kit, ASIN B0GZ5H4DJ9, prints 10 mm at about £13.90. That line is not on the Polycell 330 g tube, ASIN B000TARAWM, at about £3.49. Sinto, ASIN B0D35VCGLX, at about £16.33 says up to 1 cm, and UK reviews also report shrink. One Strike, ASIN B004L4NWCE, at about £13.20 states no depth. Deeper than any stated coat, ready mixed filler or powder is the exit.

What this comparison can and cannot tell you

None of the nine listings is a powder. Palace at about £1.25 and Langlow, ASIN B0G51LQMSN, at about £2.50 both show 4.6 from 2,247 and model 68-4. Count that star line once. A 4.6 from 15 reviews on the Decex kit is not 14,595 reviews on the Polycell tube. Ronseal smooth finish, ASIN B0046QBRRY, at about £7.24 prints no millimetre. If you might stain the timber, use wood filler or wall filler. Do not borrow 9 mm from SikaWall and paste it onto Palace.

A short checklist before you open a tub

Five checks. Is the crack static? Is the plaster dry and solid? Does this listing print a depth your hole fits? Does an outdoor line still say the paste is not water resistant? Do reviews say a thick cure goes too hard, or stays soft? A dozen screw holes do not need a 5 kg pail. If the depth is missing, stop. The checklist does not pick a brand.

Common questions

What filler do I buy for screw holes?
A small, static screw hole in dry plaster is an all-purpose ready-mixed paste, not a 5 kg pail. SikaWall states 9 mm by 25 mm at about £4.49. The Polycell 330 g tube at about £3.49 has no depth on the amazon listing. Keep the fill inside whatever the tub you buy states. A moving gap beside a frame is a sealant job.
What is fine surface filler for?
Fine surface filler is for hairline cracks, shallow nicks and a feathered edge you will sand and paint. Palace says layers of no more than 3 mm, at about £1.25, and the use line is interior. It is the wrong tub for a chase. A publisher figure of about 2 mm is that guide’s rule of thumb, not Palace’s printed layer.
How deep can ready-mixed filler go?
There is no single depth. Palace states 3 mm layers. SikaWall states 9 mm by 25 mm. The Decex kit states 10 mm. Sinto’s bullet states 1 cm. One Strike’s listing states none. Polycell’s brand page talks about 10 mm, and that line is not on the 330 g amazon listing. Stay with the number on the tub you are holding.
Can I use the same tub indoors and outdoors?
Only if that listing says so, and only with the paint it asks for. SikaWall says interior and exterior and tells you to seal outdoor fixes with oil-based paint, while the water-resistance field says not water resistant. The Decex kit says indoors and outdoors up to 10 mm. Palace’s use line is interior.
When is a 5 kg tub too much?
Sinto’s 5 kg pail at about £16.33 is for a bigger area of cracks, with a stated 1 cm and a 12 hour full cure. It is too much for a handful of screw holes, and UK reviews also report shrink, sag and lumps. A 330 g or 600 g tub is the closer match when the hole fits that tub’s own depth.
Why do two cheap listings share one review count?
Palace at about £1.25 and the Langlow title at about £2.50 both show 4.6 from 2,247 and model 68-4, and the review text matches. That is one sample on two ASINs. The Langlow page also conflicts on pack size and brand. Do not add the two counts together.
When should I stop and call a plasterer?
Stop when the plaster is hollow or missing, when the crack keeps opening, when the wall is damp, or when you are not sure what is behind the hole. A tub will not replace blown plaster or a leak. If the gap moves, you are also in the wrong category: that is a sealant, not a filler. A static, dry, shallow crack can stay a tub job.
