How to apply weed and feed without stripes or scorch

Updated: October 2026

If you are standing beside a dry spreader and a box of granules, knowing how to apply weed and feed matters more than finishing quickly. Too much product can kill grass, a stopped hopper can leave a bald patch, and iron granules can stain paving. Follow the rate and mowing gap on your own pack, spread evenly over a measured established lawn, then water in if the label requires it and rain does not arrive. The [weed and feed comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/weed-and-feed) helps with product choice. This guide covers the job from preparation to the first mow.

The day before you open the box

Read the label before you choose a day. The soil should have moisture, the leaf should be dry enough for granules to flow, and heavy rain should not be imminent. Do not treat drought-stressed or newly laid turf. Miracle-Gro and Westland both require established lawns, with a six-month minimum. Mow to the pack. Miracle-Gro advises two to three days clear before and after. Westland says wait four days after treatment. The interval on your box wins, so weed leaf is left for contact. Clear toys, furniture and washing, and keep people and animals out. Sweep debris, but do not scarify immediately before a herbicide. Measure only the grass. A 10 m by 5 m rectangle is 50 m². Subtract beds and paths, and keep the pesticide on the area you intend to treat.

Measure the dose and spread evenly

Use the gram rate on your pack. Miracle-Gro specifies 35 g/m² here and Westland 32 g/m². Another line can use 20 g/m². They are not interchangeable. For 50 m² at 35 g/m² the sum is 1.75 kg, and only if 35 g is printed on your pack. Calibrate away from the lawn and close the hopper before filling. Stand the spreader on paving over a sheet so spills stay dry. Never fill, stop or turn with the outlet open on the grass. If granules are lumpy, do not crush them and guess a heavier setting. Where a cross pass is allowed, apply half the dose lengthways and half across. Overlap only as the spreader instructions say. A setting copied from a review is unreliable. Hand spreading is suitable only where the label allows it. The HSE warns that extra product can kill the lawn. Do not immediately cover a missed strip twice. Finish the area, compare what you used with the planned dose, and follow the label. Matching coverage to the lawn is in the weed and feed buying guide.

Rain, watering and a black lawn

Many granules need water so the feed and iron leave the leaf. Miracle-Gro says water if no rain arrives within two days. Westland says within 48 hours. Do not apply into a coming downpour. Heavy rain can wash granules into drains, beds or piles. If the rain does not come, water gently and evenly. Black moss is usually the iron response. Westland advises raking dead moss after about seven to 14 days. Sharp scorched stripes can mean excess or overlap. Do not treat again to change the colour. Brush iron granules off paths, clothes and tools while they are dry. Westland says not to wash a spill, because water can set the stain. Do not flush the applicator into a drain. Some labels allow children and pets back once the lawn is watered in and dry. That line is not on every saved listing, and 48 hours is not a universal exclusion time. Clippings, raking and reseeding

Wait the labelled time before mowing. After Miracle-Gro, the first four mowings should not be used as mulch. Another label in this class allows those mowings to be composted for six months before mulch use. Follow your pack. Rake dead moss only when the directions say it is ready. Westland states six weeks before reseeding and Miracle-Gro eight. Calendar the date on your pack. If clover remains, a second dose is not automatically due. Miracle-Gro says three to five weeks for full effect. Whether the species is named is in weed and feed and clover.

Common questions

Do I mow immediately before applying weed and feed?
Usually not. Miracle-Gro advises a two-to-three-day gap before treatment, while other labels may differ. Leaving weed leaf helps the selective herbicide make contact. The mowing interval on your exact pack takes priority over a general lawn-care schedule.
Should the grass be wet?
Instructions vary by formulation, but the research here supports moist soil and a dry leaf for even granular spreading. Do not apply to a droughted lawn or in heavy rain. Read the pack because some treatments have different moisture requirements.
What if it does not rain?
Water evenly within the period stated on the label. Miracle-Gro says within two days and Westland within 48 hours for the products reviewed. Use gentle watering rather than a concentrated jet, and prevent runoff onto paths, beds and drains.
How soon can I mow again?
Miracle-Gro says about three days after application, while Westland says four days. There is no single interval for every weed and feed. Waiting protects herbicide contact and prevents treated clippings from being handled too soon.
Can I compost the clippings?
Only as your product label allows. Some instructions restrict the first four mowings from direct mulch use and may require a long composting period. Do not put freshly treated clippings around vegetables or ornamentals without explicit permission from the pack.
Why is the lawn striped or black?
Black moss can be the expected iron effect. Parallel green and scorched stripes more often suggest uneven application, overlap or a spreader problem. Do not apply extra granules; compare the used quantity with the measured dose and let the lawn recover.
Can I reseed next weekend?
Not after the products covered here. Westland states a six-week gap and Miracle-Gro eight weeks. Reseeding sooner risks poor germination or herbicide damage, so wait for the interval on your delivered pack.
