Weed and feed buying guide for established UK lawns

Updated: October 2026

You have measured the weeds in your lawn, opened amazon.co.uk and found feeds, moss killers, liquid sprays and 4 in 1 granules mixed together. This weed and feed buying guide helps you decide whether a combined product is the right job before you compare bag sizes. The question is whether you have established turf with widespread broadleaf weeds, in the treatment season, and enough measured area to justify the pack. Prices and claims for the saved listings are on the [weed and feed comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/weed-and-feed). Use the trade-offs below to narrow the shortlist.

When a combined granule is the right job

A combined granule usually feeds the grass, targets named broadleaf weeds and treats moss with iron. Use it when all three jobs are needed across much of an established lawn. Two dandelions are better pulled or spot-treated. Hungry grass alone is a feed without weedkiller. A feed-only fertiliser will not control weeds. A moss-only treatment will not target clover. Glyphosate can damage the grass as well as the weed. A liquid concentrate needs the correct sprayer and dilution. Scarifiers remove material rather than treating it chemically. The HSE advises home gardeners to use an amateur-approved product exactly as its label directs, and never to strengthen a mixture or dose. A new lawn is a poor fit. The two main brand instructions here use a six-month minimum. Newly laid turf needs establishment, not a lighter herbicide dose. Pack choices after that point are on best weed and feed UK.

Season, turf age and the reseeding gap

Treat when grass and the target weeds are growing, the soil has moisture and the lawn is not in drought. Miracle-Gro gives April to September for Complete 4 in 1. Westland gives May to August for Aftercut All In One. Those are brand instructions, not a universal calendar. If a listing omits a season, read the delivered label rather than borrowing dates. Miracle-Gro states eight weeks before reseeding. Westland states six weeks. If moss removal will leave thin patches, a late application can delay an autumn renovation. A droughted lawn is a stop, not a reason to cut the dose. Heavy rain can move granules off the area you meant to treat. If you cannot keep the lawn unused during application and re-entry, postpone the combined product.

Grams per square metre beat the biggest number

Measure the grass before you choose a bag. Split an irregular shape into rectangles, multiply length by width, then subtract beds, patios and paths. A 10 m by 6 m lawn with a 2 m by 3 m bed has 54 m² of treatable grass. Do not treat hard surfaces with iron granules. Miracle-Gro specifies 35 g/m² here, Westland 32 g/m², and one retailer line uses 20 g/m². Those rates are not interchangeable. Your pack overrides a figure copied from another brand. Two Doff cartons cost under £10 and claim 30 m² or 50 m². Options around £14 to £17 include 80 m² boxes and Westland's pack of two, which does not print one reliable combined coverage total. The large bags are about £24.94 for a claimed 360 m² and about £30.50 for a claimed 750 m². Reviews dispute that 750 m² claim. Spreading order is in how to apply weed and feed.

What to check before you pay

Check amateur garden use and current approval information, including a MAPP number where it applies. You do not obtain a professional approval yourself. The number identifies an authorised plant protection product. Requirements can differ across Great Britain and Northern Ireland, so read the label. Look for named weeds. In these listings, Miracle-Gro names dandelions, white clover and plantain. Other rows omit species or stay general. Black moss is not clover control. Only two saved Miracle-Gro listings state a pet and child re-entry line. Missing wording is not unrestricted access. Match any brand-page advice to the exact pack. If you cannot exclude children, dogs or grazing pets, a feed without herbicide may be the better buy. One saved field says powder, and one 80 m² listing shows a 40 g unit count against 2.56 kg. Confirm the title, images and label before you order a pesticide.

Common questions

Is weed and feed the same as lawn feed?
No. Lawn feed supplies nutrients, while weed and feed adds a selective herbicide and often an iron-based moss treatment. Choose the combined product only when those extra jobs are needed; otherwise you apply active ingredients without a clear purpose.
Can I use it on turf laid this spring?
Not if the turf is under the minimum age on the label. The major instructions used here say to wait six months. A reduced dose is not a safe workaround because young grass is still establishing and the product is designed for established lawns.
How do I turn a lawn measurement into a pack size?
Calculate the grass area in square metres, subtract beds and paving, then compare the result with the pack's claimed coverage at its own labelled rate. Add a modest practical margin, but do not buy a large bag merely because its headline cost per square metre is lower.
Why do rates differ between brands?
Products have different formulations and approved label directions. Rates such as 35 g/m², 32 g/m² and 20 g/m² cannot be swapped. Using too much may scorch or kill grass; using too little may leave uneven feeding and weak weed control.
Should I buy a pump sprayer instead?
Only if the product is a liquid intended for that equipment and you want liquid or spot application. The products compared here are mainly granules. Never dissolve granules or improvise a dilution unless the label expressly instructs you to do so.
When is feed without herbicide the better buy?
Choose feed-only when weeds are sparse, you want to keep clover, the lawn is too young, or you cannot meet exclusion and re-entry requirements. You can then hand-weed or use a targeted method rather than applying weedkiller across the whole lawn.
