How to use liquid rose feed

Updated: October 2026

You already have a bottle in the shed and a watering can by the tap. How to use liquid rose feed is the method on that pack: shake, measure the millilitres printed on the bottle you hold, wet the soil, pour at the base, and stop before autumn growth. It is not a ranking, and it is not a universal capful. The [rose fertiliser liquid comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/rose-fertiliser-liquid) holds the eight listings. This page tells you how to apply the bottle you hold without copying 50 ml onto a 15 ml dose. We compared amazon.co.uk listings and public UK sources. This is not a laboratory test.

Shake, measure, wet the soil, pour at the base

If the compost has pulled from the rim, water first. Shake the bottle, measure the printed dose, fill the can, and pour at the base. Westland maker pages print 50 ml in 4.5 L, soil only. Doff’s listing prints 15 ml for about nine plants. Empathy’s listing says apply it on the roots when planting; the field prints 1:0:0. A maker page quotes 20 ml in 4.5 L on container roses; that figure is not on Amazon. Miracle-Gro, UK GROW, the Topline bundle, and Neudorff have no usable dilution on the listing. With Westland 20100440, pour 50 ml into a 4.5 L can and do not add a second 50 ml for luck. Over-strength scorches. Keep feed off the leaves unless that label is foliar. Choosing a bottle sits on the liquid rose fertiliser buying guide. Store the concentrate capped, away from children, pets, frost and ponds.

How often, and when to stop

Westland maker pages say every 7–14 days from March. Doff says fortnightly. Peter Beales uses liquid every 7–10 days in flower, then nothing from September to February. B&Q’s Westland page stops in August. Westland Garden Health says March to September. Peter Beales and the RHS container page stop by the end of August. This page does not invent a third date. Start in mid-April, feed through June and July, and give a last can in the third week of August. Pots want those millilitres, not a stronger cap. The patio interval sits on liquid rose feed for pots.

Scorch, leaves, and leftover mix

Scorch is usually over-strength or dry compost. Doubling the cap because the pot is small makes roses worse. Westland’s line is do not exceed the rate. If you already poured a strong mix, flood the pot with plain water and skip the next feed. Leaves stay dry unless the pack is foliar. Pour at the base. If you wet the leaves, rinse with clear water. Do not add a foliar seaweed to compensate unless that is a separate labelled product and a dull day. Neudorff’s maker line is to use mixed solution within 24 hours. The other listings do not print a leftover rule. Mix what you will pour today. Concentrate that sat through a frost needs a check of the pack. Do not assume the analysis is unchanged. A stronger can does not treat black spot, rust or mildew. A pale leaf on chalk after you followed the label may be lock-up.

When the plant is the problem

Call a professional when the plant is the problem, not the cap. Dieback or honey fungus on a house climber, replant failure on an old rose bed, and concentrate in your eyes after rinsing are not feed questions.

Common questions

How do I mix liquid rose feed in a watering can?
Water the soil first if it is dry. Shake the bottle. Measure the millilitres printed on that pack into the can. Fill with water. Pour at the base. Westland maker pages use 50 ml in 4.5 L. Doff uses 15 ml for about nine plants. Do not copy one figure onto the other bottle.
Can I pour it on the leaves?
Only if that label is foliar. Westland’s maker pages are soil only. A soil drench on hot foliage is a scorch risk. The RHS puts foliar feeds on dull days; that advice does not rewrite a soil-only bottle.
How often should I feed?
Follow the pack. Westland maker pages say every 7–14 days in the growing season. Doff says fortnightly. Peter Beales uses liquid every 7–10 days in flower. More than once a week is cost, not extra bloom.
When should I stop?
Peter Beales: last liquid before the end of August, then nothing from September to February. B&Q’s Westland page also stops in August. Westland Garden Health says March to September. The RHS container page says avoid feeding after August. This page does not invent a third date; on pots, stop by the end of August.
What if the pot is dry?
Water first and wait until the compost is moist. Then apply the printed dose. Feeding dry compost is how you scorch roots. A small pot does not need a double cap.
Can I store mixed feed?
Neudorff’s maker line is to use mixed solution within 24 hours. The other Amazon listings do not give a leftover rule. Mix what you will use today. Store the sealed concentrate away from children, pets, frost and ponds.
Is more cap better?
No. Over-strength scorches. Extra days beyond the label add cost. If a rose is still pale after you followed the pack, the next question is water, pot size, disease or soil, not a second cap the same afternoon.
