Liquid rose feed for pots

Updated: October 2026

You have a pale patio rose in a 30 cm pot, July compost that looks tired, and a bottle that says rose. Liquid rose feed for pots is the container cadence: a reliable fortnightly can once the compost charge fades, on moist compost, then a stop after August. It is not a stronger cap than a bed rose, and it is not a second granule season copied into a trough. The [rose fertiliser liquid comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/rose-fertiliser-liquid) shows the pot-friendly rows. This page keeps the interval and the water in one place. We compared amazon.co.uk listings and public UK sources. This is not a laboratory test.

Why a pot is not a border

A border rose roots into soil you can top-dress twice a year. A patio rose sits in a finite bag of compost. Nutrients leave with the water. The RHS growing guide treats containers as a liquid job, about fortnightly from mid-spring to late summer, then high potash once buds form. Border roses still get granules twice a year. A peat-free mix often carries a starter feed for about six weeks. That is a rule of thumb on the RHS container pages, not a lab figure for your bag. Patio types in 23–35 cm pots run out sooner than a climber in a half-barrel. The bottle does not change. By mid-June a rose planted in April is often paler, and the pot dries by late afternoon. That is water plus liquid, not a granule carton in a 30 cm pot. Peter Beales: pots need more watering, not a stronger feed than the label. The method sits on how to use liquid rose feed.

Fortnightly liquid, not a stronger cap

Feed from April to the end of August, and only on moist compost. Do not double the cap because the pot is small. Westland’s maker rate of 50 ml in 4.5 L stays 50 ml. Doff’s 15 ml for about nine plants does not become 30 ml for one patio rose. Empathy’s maker page quotes 20 ml in 4.5 L on container roses; the Amazon listing’s own line is a root drench when planting. Once buds form, the RHS points containers toward a high-potash or tomato liquid. Doff prints 4:4:12. Westland’s maker pages print 6.0-3.0-9.5. A tomato bottle you already own can cover those weeks. A double cap on a dry pot at noon crisps leaf edges. Which listing to buy sits on best liquid rose feed.

Water first, then stop after August

Feed when the compost is moist. In a heatwave, water in the morning and feed in the evening, or water one day and feed the next. Empty a saucer of stale mix so roots are not sitting in leftover concentrate. Stop after August on the RHS container page. Peter Beales wants the last liquid before the end of August. B&Q’s Westland page also ends in August; Westland Garden Health runs to September. This page does not invent a third date. On pots, give the last can by the end of August and let the wood harden. Soft October growth is what an early frost takes off.

Which bottle belongs on a patio

Westland B08YNZMK7K is the 1 L can with 487 reviews: maker’s 50 ml in 4.5 L, off the leaves. Empathy is the drench when you have just potted a bush. Doff is the printed 4:4:12, from four ratings. The Topline granule half is a spring top-dress, not the liquid. Neudorff and UK GROW have no star line. A light spring top-dress on a large container does not replace the fortnightly liquid. Under glass, follow that bottle’s indoor line. A pot that keeps dying back is not a feed question.

Common questions

Do pot roses need liquid feed?
Yes, once the compost’s own charge fades. The RHS treats containers as a liquid job from mid-spring to late summer. A March granule on a border does not cover a 30 cm pot. Liquid is the default on a patio, not a luxury extra.
How often should I feed a patio rose?
About fortnightly from mid-spring to late summer on the RHS growing guide, on moist compost. Peter Beales still says more water, not more feed than the label. Westland maker pages allow 7–14 days; Doff is fortnightly. Do not invent a weekly double cap.
Should I use a stronger mix in a pot?
No. A smaller volume of compost is a reason to water more often, not to double the millilitres. Over-strength scorches. Use the printed rate on the bottle you hold.
Can I use tomato feed instead?
Once buds form, a high-potash or tomato liquid is what the RHS growing guide points at for containers. Doff is the printed 4:4:12 in this set. A tomato bottle you already own can cover the flowering weeks. It does not replace water, and it does not treat black spot.
When does the compost’s own feed run out?
Treat about six weeks as a rule of thumb from RHS container guidance, not as a timed test of your bag. After that, start the fortnightly liquid. If you planted in April, June is when most patio roses start asking.
Should I still add granules in spring?
On a large container, a light spring top-dress is mentioned on the RHS roses-in-containers page. It does not replace liquid through summer. The Topline bundle is 900 g of granules plus 800 ml of liquid; use both halves or buy a 1 L can instead.
What size pot does the RHS talk about?
Patio and miniature types: about 23–35 cm deep. Climbers need larger pots. The bottle stays the same. A bigger pot needs more water and the same printed millilitres, not a different analysis invented for containers.
