Peat-free compost for flowers

Updated: October 2026

You have seen a headline that peat compost sales ended in 2024, and you want to know whether the bag in front of you is actually peat-free. Peat-free compost for flowers means the listing prints those words. A pledge to legislate later is a different fact. The [Flowers compost comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/flowers-compost) holds seven amazon.co.uk bags. This page is the label test and the England timeline. We used Defra’s 2022 announcement, a January 2026 deposited letter, a Commons answer of 19 March 2026, and the wording on these listings. We did not test the contents of any sack in a lab.

What the England ban is, and is not

On 27 August 2022 Defra said amateur peat sales in England would end by 2024. No Act brought that date into force. On 29 January 2026 a deposited letter from Baroness Hayman corrected end of this Parliament to when parliamentary time allows. On 19 March 2026 Mary Creagh told the Commons the government will legislate when parliamentary time allows, and that a new impact assessment is required. A Ten Minute Rule bill in the 2024–25 session is not an Act. Parliament’s bill page was last updated on 7 July 2025.

The words that count on the bag

Peat-free is a specific phrase. The RHS says that if the bag does not say peat-free, it most likely is not. Organic on a title, with no certification body named, is a marketing word until a certifier is printed. PAS 100:2018 is a specification for composted biowaste, not a peat-free badge, and none of these listings claims it.

These seven bags

Only Miracle-Gro prints peat-free: the 20 litre listing at about £7.95, with a feed of up to 3 months. Who should skip it is on best compost for flowers. Munnie says the blend enables a reduction in the use of peat. Growmoor 50 litres, Growmoor 60 litres and the CB Fuels listing do not state peat-free. Laeto and DIVCHI use organic wording with no certifier named. Six of these seven listings fail a peat-free rule on the text we have.

Logos and claims that are not on these bags

The Responsible Sourcing Scheme prints an A–E score on participating bags. The logo is not in these seven product listings, so none of them receives a grade here. Watering practice is on how to use compost for flowers. The 2024 date in the old Defra announcement is a missed intention, not a law you can quote at the checkout.

What to require at the checkout

If you want peat-free, the bag has to print it. In this set that is the 20 litre Miracle-Gro listing.

Common questions

Is it illegal to sell peat compost in England in 2026?
Selling it remains lawful on the public record used here. The 19 March 2026 Commons answer says the government will legislate for a ban on peat and peat-containing products when parliamentary time allows, and that a new impact assessment is still required. There is no start date in that answer. The RHS also says no legislation banning peat use in horticulture is currently in place. A shop that has dropped peat is applying its own policy.
Did the 2024 ban happen?
Defra announced on 27 August 2022 that amateur peat sales in England would end by 2024. No Act gave that date legal force. The January 2026 deposited letter corrected “end of this Parliament” to “when parliamentary time allows”. A Ten Minute Rule bill that aimed at the end of 2025 was not passed. The 2024 line is still widely repeated. It describes an intention, not a ban you can rely on at the till.
What words on the bag mean peat-free?
The words peat-free, printed on the bag. The RHS says that if the pack does not specifically say peat-free, it likely is not. Environmentally friendly, organic, sustainable and renewable do not carry that meaning. In this set only the Miracle-Gro 20 litre listing prints peat-free. A review that uses the phrase is not a substitute for the product title or the bullet.
Is peat-reduced the same as peat-free?
It is a different claim. Munnie’s listing says the blend enables a reduction in the use of peat. That sentence does not say peat-free. The National Garden Scheme warns that peat-reduced compost can still contain as much as 50 percent peat. That figure is their explainer, not a lab result for Munnie or for any other bag here. If you want no peat, require the words peat-free.
Does organic or eco mean there is no peat in the bag?
Organic and eco-friendly do not answer the peat question. Laeto and DIVCHI use organic wording, and neither names a certifier or says peat-free. Munnie’s eco-friendly language sits beside a reduced-peat line. The RHS lists organic and environmentally friendly among the phrases that do not mean peat-free. Look for a certification body if organic status is what you need, and look for peat-free as a separate sentence.
What is the Responsible Sourcing Scheme logo, and do these bags show it?
The scheme’s logo carries an A–E score on bags that take part, with A at the most responsible end of their scale. It is not in the saved listings for these seven listings, so this page assigns no grade. PAS 100:2018 is also absent. You can still look for the logo on another brand. You cannot infer a score for Miracle-Gro, Growmoor, Munnie, Laeto, or DIVCHI from a logo that is not on the page.
Does this rule apply in Scotland and Wales as well?
The Commons answers and the Defra 2022 announcement used here are about England. Peat policy is devolved. This page does not say the England timetable is already law in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, and it does not invent a ban for those countries either. The label test still travels: if you want peat-free compost, the bag has to say peat-free, wherever in the UK you are shopping.
