Intermediate switch or two way: count the positions first

Updated: October 2026

You are standing on a landing, or at the top of a stair, trying to decide whether the next Jung part is an intermediate or another two-way. Amazon's 1-way row, a two-gang plate and a true intermediate are three different things, and the basket will not sort them for you. Count how many positions already switch that one light, then map the count to a 507 U or a 509 U. Prices and the wider table stay on the [Jung switch comparison](/hub/electrical-equipment/jung-switch). This page does not fit the switch. Figures are the listings noted on 21 October 2026.

Gang, way and intermediate are three words

Gang is how many rockers sit on one plate. A two-gang plate can switch two different lights. It does not, by itself, mean the light is controlled from two places. Way is how many positions control one light. Two positions, such as the top and bottom of a stair, are two two-way switches. Intermediate is the extra switch when a third position is added. UK guides from Socket Store, Dowsing & Reynolds, and Arrow Electricals use that count. A shop that calls the 507 U a 4-way is using a different label. The buying order sits on the Jung switch buying guide.

Count the positions

Walk the light and count the plates that already control it, including the one you are replacing. One plate means a one-way circuit. Two plates, the hall and the landing with nothing in between, need a two-way switch at each end. A landing between a bottom switch and a top switch is the third position, and that middle one is the intermediate. Four positions still use two-way switches at the two ends, with an intermediate in each gap. You do not replace the ends with intermediates. Screwfix also says three intermediate switches are used together. That sentence is not used here. A door, a half-landing and a bedroom landing is two-way, intermediate, two-way. This page does not draw terminal letters.

507 U is the intermediate insert

Jung's UK page for the 507 U gives the version as intermediate, 10 AX at 250 V on that sheet, with a 100 W self-ballasted cap. The amazon.co.uk title uses Kreuz. One review says that is the switch for three switches on one light. It does not make the 507 U a dimmer. Ignore a review that calls a unit a quiet dimmer. The parcel does not state a cover. Isolation belongs on replace a Jung light switch, and only after the old part is already an intermediate. Do not fit a 507 U as the only switch on a one-way light.

509 U is two two-way mechanisms, not an intermediate

Jung's version line for the 509 U is 2 x 1-pole, 2-way. The amazon.co.uk title says double change. It is not the Kreuz name, and it is not the middle switch of a three-position run. Two rockers are the gang. Each mechanism is a two-way. If you need the middle of three positions, skip the 509 U and use the 507 U. Amazon's 1-way row conflicts with Jung's version line and is not used. The Wi-Fi and touch rows are not used either. On a two-position stair a 509 U can be a flush two-way, with a second mechanism for another light. The busy plate does not make it an intermediate.

What to ignore

Ignore three labels. Amazon's 1-way cell on the 507 U loses to Jung's intermediate line. Screwfix's sentence that three intermediate switches are used together is not the count used here. A shop that says 4-way means, in UK English, an intermediate. The 606 W is a surface 1-pole 2-way, not that middle switch. If the old part is a grey surface box, use the Jung surface switch page. This page will not tell you which terminal takes which conductor.

Common questions

One, two, or three positions: which switch do I need?
One position is a one-way switch. Two positions need a two-way switch at each end, with no intermediate. Three or more positions keep two-way switches at the ends and put an intermediate in each gap. In this set the intermediate insert is the 507 U. The 509 U is two two-way mechanisms on one flush insert, which answers a gang question, not the third-position question.
Is a landing switch an intermediate or another two-way?
It depends how many positions that one light already has. A landing and a hall, and nothing else, are two two-way switches. A landing between a bottom switch and a top switch is the third position, so that middle plate is the intermediate. Count the plates on that light before you look at the rocker style.
Is the 507 U that middle switch?
Yes. Jung's UK version line says intermediate, and one amazon.co.uk review says the Kreuzschalter is what you need for three switches on one light. The listing does not state a cover. It is the wrong part when you only have two positions, and it is not described here as the only switch on a one-way light.
Is the 509 U an intermediate because it has two rockers?
No. Two rockers are a two-gang insert. Jung calls the 509 U two 1-pole 2-way mechanisms. The Amazon title says double change. A two-gang plate can control two lights, or give you two two-way mechanisms side by side. It does not insert itself in the middle of a three-position stair.
Why does Amazon say 1-way on the 507 U?
The attribute row says 1-way, and it conflicts with the title, the size row and Jung's intermediate line. This comparison does not use that row. The same kind of clash appears on the 509 U, where 1-way is also rejected. Read the article number and Jung's version line, not the circuit-type cell, when they disagree.
Where does the 606 W sit in this choice?
The 606 W is a complete grey surface switch, 1-pole 2-way on Jung's page and 2-way on the Amazon circuit row. It is not the intermediate, and it is not the 509 U. Use it when you are replacing a surface two-way, then read the surface page for the discontinuation date. Do not treat it as the middle of three flush plates.
What is the UK name if a shop says 4-way?
Ask for an intermediate. 4-way in that shop wording is a different naming habit, often carried over from US descriptions, and eibabo uses it for the 507 U. On a UK stair the middle switch is an intermediate, the end switches are two-way, and a two-gang plate is a count of rockers, not a count of positions.
