2000W inverter for a motorhome

Updated: October 2026

You want a kettle or a microwave in a campervan, and the leisure battery is under the seat. A 2000W inverter for a motorhome only helps when that bank can supply a short, heavy 12 V current and the cable run matches the manual. The sockets you can trust, until a competent person says otherwise, are the sockets on the inverter. The Products Compared editorial team used amazon.co.uk listings and public UK motorhome notes, read on 21 October 2026. There was no overnight test in a van. The price table is on the [2000W power inverter comparison](/hub/electrical-equipment/2000w-power-inverter). What a 2000 W load asks of a leisure bank

At 12 V, a draw near 2000 W is roughly 170–200 A once inverter losses are included. The rule of thumb used here is about 185 A at 12 V and about 90 percent efficiency. A MotorhomeFun thread puts 2000 W divided by 12 V near 167 A, then about 183 A with losses, and about 92 Ah for half an hour at 2000 W before chemistry limits. A single 100 Ah lithium label is not automatically enough: the continuous discharge rating has to cover that roughly 185 A. Renogy’s campervan guide says a 2000–3000 W inverter makes sense only if the battery and the cables can supply it.

Which units in this set come up in van use

DATOUBOSS is £119.99 with two UK sockets stated. One motorhome review reports a hair dryer, a hoover, and an air fryer, and says to keep the feed wires short. Another reports a 130 W pond pump for several hours. That file is 18 ratings. One review is not a capacity test. Renogy is £199.99, 4.3 from 216 reviews, and states 2000 W continuous, 4000 W peak, and two UK sockets. UK reviews report fridges and kettles, and they call the supplied leads underrated or hot. MINGHAOXIN is £132.99 and states 2000 W continuous on 12 V pure sine. The socket count is two or four, and the warranty line is 60 days. A 1 kg clip-on is the wrong product for a kettle. The 24 V EDECOA is a lorry match, set out on the best 2000W power inverter UK page.

Cable run and clips

Keep the inverter near the bank. A run under a seat can be short. A run from a rear garage to a cupboard over the cab forces a larger conductor, and the manual for your model is the only table that counts. Practical Motorhome tells owners to fuse near the battery and to bin unfused crocodile clips. The order for the inverter’s own sockets is how to connect a 2000W inverter. Clips do not belong on a high continuous load in a van that moves. A UK review in this set reports melted clip leads on a 400 W fan. If reviews of your model already complain about the included lead, replace that lead to the manual before the first boil.

EHU and the van’s own 230 V sockets

EHU is the site supply through the van’s inlet. The inverter makes about 230 V from the battery when you are off the hook-up, on its own sockets. Out & About Live describes a priority relay between EHU and inverter sockets as something a designed system can do. Naming that relay is not a wiring diagram. Feeding the habitation sockets, separating neutral, and placing an RCD are fixed-installation questions. The IET note on caravan installations points at Section 721. Northern Ireland uses the same 230 V, 50 Hz, BS 1363 pattern. When the existing sockets should come alive from the battery, stop and use a competent person. Waveform for a fridge, as against a kettle element, is the pure sine vs modified sine inverter page.

Common questions

Will a 2000 W inverter run a motorhome kettle or microwave from a leisure battery?
It can, for a short burst, only if the battery’s continuous discharge covers roughly 170–200 A at 12 V and the cable is the one in that model’s manual. One DATOUBOSS review names an air fryer and a hair dryer. That is a single report. Read the appliance input watts, then the battery data sheet.
How many amp-hours does a short 2000 W burst take from 12 V?
A MotorhomeFun working figure is about 92 Ah for 30 minutes at 2000 W, before lead-acid depth limits. A retailer’s kettle example is about 10–30 Ah for one use. Your battery’s allowed depth of discharge, and its maximum continuous amps, still decide whether that burst is available.
Is a single 100 Ah lithium battery enough?
Often it is not, if you want to hold a load near 2000 W. About 185 A is a high continuous discharge for many 100 Ah packs, and half an hour at that rate is close to the whole label. Match the inverter to the battery’s stated continuous current.
How long a cable run is reasonable under a seat or in a garage?
Short enough to stay inside the length your manual allows for the cable size you can fit. Under a seat, next to the bank, is the easy case. A garage at the far end of a coachbuilt motorhome needs the larger conductor that manual specifies.
Can I feed the van’s existing 230 V sockets?
Not as a DIY backfeed, and not by plugging the inverter into a socket on the van. Changeover, neutral separation, and the habitation consumer unit are work for a competent person. Until that exists, use the sockets on the inverter itself.
What is the difference between plugging into the inverter and using EHU?
EHU is the campsite supply through the van’s inlet. The inverter is battery power turned into about 230 V when you are not on the hook-up, on the inverter’s own sockets. A priority relay can choose between them only in a system designed for both.
