How to connect a 2000W inverter

Updated: October 2026

You have a case on the bench, a leisure battery or a lithium bank beside it, and a kettle lead that you would like to plug in tonight. How to connect a 2000W inverter means feeding only the sockets on the inverter, with the fuse and the cable taken from that model’s manual. The Products Compared editorial team used the manuals named below as examples, plus the amazon.co.uk box contents, on 21 October 2026. There was no install in a van. Which listing you bought is on the [2000W power inverter comparison](/hub/electrical-equipment/2000w-power-inverter). Work out the current, then open that model’s manual

A load near 2000 W on 12 V is a high DC current. As a rule of thumb, 2000 W at 12 V and about 90 percent efficiency is roughly 185 A. At 24 V the current is about half, which is why the EDECOA is a different cable conversation from a 12 V Renogy. The rule of thumb does not pick a fuse. Renogy’s PUH1 manual lists a 250 A battery fuse. REDARC’s note, for a model that is not an ASIN here, uses a 250 A MEGA fuse. Victron’s Phoenix Smart notes for a 12/2000 use a 300 A fuse. Do not copy 250 A onto another brand because the title says 2000 W. If you have not checked continuous watts, do that on the 2000W power inverter buying guide before you crimp. If the manual never states a fuse and a cable, stop.

Order of connection for the inverter’s own sockets

Isolate the battery before you touch the terminals, and isolate any AC source as well. Electrical Safety First’s Best Practice Guide 2 is the reference: the DC source comes off, not only the mains plug. Fit the fuse in the positive cable, close to the battery positive. Do not put the fuse at the inverter end and call the run protected. Keep the cable short and use the cross-section the manual states. Give the case air. Bedding over the vents is how a thermal shutdown becomes a regular event. Fit a grounding lead only in the way that manual describes. Then plug the appliance into a socket on the inverter. The AC output stays on the inverter’s own face.

The lead in the box is not the design

Alligator clips are the connection printed for VeftBltrem, Delousiber, Luqixcey, VexNook, and Bekasa. A UK review of the VexNook says the cables melted on a 400 W fan. JARXIOKE’s box lists 60 cm of stated 16 mm² copper. That is what the carton contains, not a full-load design for roughly 185 A. Renogy UK reviews call the supplied leads about 100 A or burnt. If reviews already say the included lead overheats, do not try it at kettle power. EDECOA’s cables are for 24 V only.

The stop line

Do not plug the inverter’s AC output into a house wall socket to feed the ring. Victron’s installation text says never to connect the AC output to a household wall outlet or a generator. BS 1363 on the inverter is for your kettle. G98 is about small generators in parallel with the public network. It is not a connection guide for this battery inverter. An inverter that only feeds its own sockets is not automatically Part P work. Joining a consumer unit or a caravan’s fixed 230 V system is work for a competent person. If the job is the van’s existing sockets, use the 2000W inverter for a motorhome page and leave the changeover to someone who will design it.

Common questions

What current does 2000 W draw from a 12 V battery?
As a rule of thumb, 2000 W at 12 V and about 90 percent efficiency is roughly 185 A. At 24 V the current is about half. The fuse and the cable still come from the manual for your model. Renogy’s 250 A and Victron’s 300 A are different manuals, not a shared answer.
Where does the fuse go?
In the positive cable, close to the battery positive, at the current that model’s manual states. A fuse at the inverter leaves the run unfused. If the manual does not state a fuse, stop rather than borrowing 250 A from a different brand.
Can I use the cables in the box?
Only if that model’s manual says those cables match the load you will actually run. JARXIOKE includes 60 cm of 16 mm². Renogy UK reviews call the supplied leads underrated for 2000 W. The carton shows what was packed. It does not prove the conductor is right at full title power.
How close should the inverter sit to the battery, and how much air does it need?
Close enough that the cable stays inside the length your manual allows, because a longer run needs a larger conductor. Leave the fan and the vents clear of bedding. A case under a seat can work when the air path is open. A closed locker is how it overheats.
May I plug the inverter into a house socket to feed the ring?
No. That is backfeed. The inverter’s AC output stays on its own sockets. Do not use a house socket or a generator inlet to energise the ring. Rules for plug-in solar do not change that stop for a battery inverter.
Do alligator clips belong on a 2000 W continuous load?
No. Clips are how several light units in this set are supplied, and a UK review reports melted VexNook cables on a 400 W fan. A continuous load near 2000 W at 12 V needs the fused cable in the manual. If you cannot match that cable, use a competent person.
