Drill pump for a water butt

Updated: 2026-10-23

The watering can is the slow part, and the butt is full after a wet week, or a paddling pool is sitting on the lawn and you want that water in the barrel. A drill pump for a water butt is for that occasional move of clear rainwater, not for a hose you run every dry evening. The [drill pump comparison](/hub/drilling-and-accessories/drill-pump) holds the listings and the prices. Products Compared read the Royal Horticultural Society's water-butt advice, maker sheets and the stored amazon.co.uk reviews. We did not empty a butt. When the tap is enough

The Royal Horticultural Society's point is simple. A water butt on a stand fills a watering can from the tap. You do not need a drill, a hose or a prime for that. If the can is what you actually use, fitting a pump puts a chuck next to standing water for no gain. A hose on that same tap is where a pump starts to matter. The tap does not give useful pressure at the end of a hose across the garden. These attachments are transfer pumps. They move a volume from one container to another. They are not a rising main. Some retailer lines claim a 10 metre priming height. That sits far above the 2–3 metre suction on the Clarke, Sealey and Gardena sheets, so do not treat 10 metres as measured.

Emptying a butt or a paddling pool

The job these pumps show up for, in the stored ESENO reviews, is a one-off transfer. Reviewers emptied a paddling pool into butts and moved water from one butt to another. Gardena's bullets name a rain barrel, next to a waterbed, an aquarium and a pond. That is a short run of reasonably clear water, with you standing there. The inlet goes in the pool, the outlet goes over the rim, and you run the drill until the pool is a puddle. ESENO prefers a mains drill for longer jobs because batteries die. One review could not suck 2 metres from a well. Keep the pump low, and do not leave it running. The sequence of arrows, prime and a dry drill is on how to use a drill pump.

Height, hose and silt

Suction on the sheets we used is about 2–3 metres, not the delivery figure in a tall amazon field. Clarke's leaflet separates about 2 metres of suction from about 15 metres of pumping head. Gardena's English manual puts suction at about 3 metres. If the pump is on the ground and the water is in a tall slim butt, you may be asking for a lift the manual never offered. Keep the inlet short and reinforced, and do not use a soft hose that collapses. Leaves, moss and the sludge at the bottom of a butt block a small vane. Gardena reviews say dirty drain water was a poor match. Stop the inlet short of the floor if you only want the clearer water. If you want the sludge out, a plastic drill pump is the wrong tool. When there is no safe socket and the volume is small, a hand pump such as Hill Pumps' P925-AAA moves about 250 ml a stroke, with no electricity. That is a can, not a pool.

When to stop using the drill

Stop using the drill when watering from the butt is the evening routine, not a rescue after a paddling pool. A chuck pump needs you, a trigger and a prime every time. A water-butt pump with its own motor and a float can stay in the barrel. The Hozelock Flowmax Collect 2200 is that kind of submersible, listed at 2200 litres per hour with a float. This page is not ranking it against the Gardena. Also stop if the butt is silted, if you are tempted to pump fuel, or if anyone might drink the water. Rainwater from a roof is not a drinking supply, and none of these listings shows a drinking-water approval. A gasoline bullet is not permission. If you will water through the dry weeks, that choice is drill pump or an electric pump.

Common questions

Can a drill pump empty a water butt?
It can move a modest amount of clear rainwater if the inlet is in the water, the hose does not collapse, and you stay with the drill. It is a poor way to empty sludge, and it is not a pump you leave running.
Is the tap on the butt enough?
Yes, when the butt is on a stand and you are filling a watering can. That is the Royal Horticultural Society's arrangement, and it needs no drill. A pump becomes relevant when you want water to travel along a hose.
Can I pump a paddling pool into the butt?
That is the job stored ESENO reviews describe: pool water into butts, with the outlet hose over the rim. Keep the run short, follow the arrows, and prefer a mains drill if the pool is large enough to flatten a battery.
Will it water the garden like mains pressure?
No. These are transfer pumps. A chuck pump can move water along a hose for a short spell, and it will not hold a spray pattern the way a rising main does. For evening watering, a submersible butt pump has a float and its own motor.
How high can it pull from inside the butt?
Plan on about 2–3 metres of suction, the band on the Clarke and Gardena sheets, not a 10 metre priming claim. Keep the pump low and the inlet short.
Is rainwater clean enough?
Clear water above the sludge is the intended job. Leaves and grit are not. Stop the inlet short of the floor of the butt. Dirty drain water was a poor match in Gardena's stored reviews. Do not drink the rainwater, and do not treat a listing as a drinking-water approval.
