Drill pump vs electric pump

Updated: 2026-10-23

You already own a drill, and a water butt or a pool needs moving. A drill pump vs electric pump decision is mostly about time and dirt. Use the chuck pump for a short, clear, occasional transfer. Use an electric water-butt pump when the hose is a habit or the water is silty. The drill-pump rows, if you still want one, are on the [drill pump comparison](/hub/drilling-and-accessories/drill-pump). Products Compared used maker limits and UK retailer pages for the electric examples, not this category's amazon listings. We did not run either pump. When the drill pump is the right buy

Avoiding another tool is right when the job is occasional and the water is clear. A paddling pool after a weekend, a fish tank, or one butt emptied into another is the pattern in the ESENO reviews. On 19 October 2026 the Gardena 1490-20 was £35.12 and the ESENO was £14.95 on amazon.co.uk. For one or two clear transfers a season, the attachment is the proportionate buy, if you can prime it and you will stay with it. Who those two suit is on the best drill pump page. It is the wrong buy when you have no drill, because you would be purchasing the motor anyway. It is also the wrong buy for petrol, for anything people will drink, and for sewage or a rising flood indoors. No listing in this set shows an ATEX mark or a drinking-water approval.

Heat, batteries and continuous running

A drill is not a pump motor with a duty rating for half an hour. Draper's 18937 manual says the pump is not for continuous running. Gardena's 1490 manual excludes continuous operation and limits a dry run to about 12 seconds. Stanley's STA40200, outside this set, is capped at 30 seconds in one go. A trigger taped down while a butt empties is outside the way these tools are described. Gardena's stored notes include a drill that got very hot. ESENO prefers a mains drill because batteries die on longer jobs. A 30 mA RCD is the Health and Safety Executive's figure for a corded drill outdoors. The same device belongs on a corded submersible outdoors. An RCD does not make petrol vapour safe, and it does not let you walk away.

What the electric pump adds

An electric water-butt pump has its own motor, a lead, and usually a float that switches it off when the level drops. You put it in the butt and leave it there for the season. A drill pump cannot do that. You fit it, you prime it, and you hold the trigger. The electric pump is what people mean when they water the borders from the barrel. B&Q listed the Mac Allister MCBWP400, a 400 W water-butt pump, at £48, with a claimed 3000 litres per hour, a float and particles up to 1 mm. Homebase listed a Draper 36327 at £53, with a float. The Hozelock Flowmax Collect 2200 is the same idea at a claimed 2200 litres per hour. The one-off stays on drill pump for a water butt.

Dirty water and the recommendation

A plastic vane on a chuck pump is a poor match for silt, leaves and pond muck. Gardena reviews already say dirty drain water was a poor match. The Mac Allister figure of particles up to 1 mm is still a clean-water butt, not a muddy pond. On Screwfix at the time of research, the Kärcher SP 11.000 Dirt was £79.99, claimed up to 11,000 litres per hour, with particles to 20 mm. That is a dirty-water pump with its own motor, and the price is a Screwfix shelf figure, not an amazon.co.uk row from this set. Use the drill pump for one or two clear transfers a season. Buy a submersible with a float for dry-week watering, and a dirty-water pump for a silty pond or the sludge in the butt.

Common questions

Is a drill pump cheaper because it is worse?
It is cheaper because the drill is the motor you already own. On 19 October 2026 the ESENO was £14.95 and the Gardena was £35.12, against butt pumps listed around £48 to £53 on B&Q and Homebase. The saving disappears if you cook the drill, or if you then buy the submersible anyway.
Will I damage the drill if I pump for half an hour?
You are outside the duty these manuals describe. Draper excludes continuous running. Gardena excludes it too and stops a dry run at about 12 seconds. Stanley's pump is limited to 30 seconds. Half an hour on the trigger is a reason to buy a pump with its own motor.
What does a water-butt pump do that a drill pump does not?
It stays in the butt, it has its own motor, and a float can switch it off as the level falls. The Hozelock Flowmax Collect 2200 and the Mac Allister MCBWP400 are that kind of tool. A drill pump needs you on the trigger for every litre.
Which one for a single paddling pool?
The drill pump, if the water is clear and you will stay with it. That is the transfer ESENO reviews describe, pool into butts. A £48 butt pump is the better buy only if the pool starts a summer of watering.
Which one for a silty pond?
Not the drill pump. Gardena reviews already struggle with dirty water. A dirty-water submersible, such as the Kärcher SP 11.000 Dirt listed at Screwfix for £79.99 with particles to 20 mm, is the class of tool for sludge.
Do both need an RCD?
A corded drill and a corded submersible both want a 30 mA RCD outdoors or in the wet. That is the Health and Safety Executive's figure. A cordless drill has no mains lead, and it can still overheat. An RCD does not replace the float on a butt pump.
