Drill pump buying guide

Updated: 2026-10-23

You already own a drill, and a water butt, a paddling pool or a fish tank needs emptying without another motor in the shed. A drill pump buying guide puts the liquid and the suction figure first, then the drill and the hose, and only then the price. The [drill pump comparison](/hub/drilling-and-accessories/drill-pump) holds the eleven amazon.co.uk listings and the shelf prices from 19 October 2026, from £7.97 to £35.12. Products Compared read those listings, the stored UK reviews and the maker sheets. We did not measure a flow. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What a drill pump is, and what it is not

A drill pump is a small transfer pump whose shaft sits in the chuck, so the drill is the motor. You hold it or bolt it to a board, clip on a hose, and run the drill for a short job. It is not a submersible you leave in the butt, and it is not a tool for sewage or a rising flood. Amazon's height column prints 30 metres, 15 metres and 3 metres without always saying suction or delivery, so the biggest flow number is a poor way to sort the table.

Liquid first, including petrol

Read the named liquids before the litres. Clarke's CPP3000B bullets name fresh water, seawater, insecticides and liquid fertilisers, and the page asks about petrol without a yes. Draper's 18937 instructions ban petrol. Gardena's 1490 manual excludes flammable liquids, food and continuous running. The Health and Safety Executive's guidance is that sparks ignite vapour, and a 30 mA RCD does not make a drill safe in that vapour. Cheaper listings still print gasoline, fuel or diesel. Flintronic lists fuel and gasoline beside water. None of that is an approval, and none of these listings shows an ATEX mark or a drinking-water approval. For petrol, stop.

Suction, delivery and hose size

Suction is how far the pump pulls water up to itself. Delivery is how far it pushes after it is primed. Clarke's leaflet separates them: suction 2 metres, delivery 15 metres, a 19 mm hose, and at least 350 W at 2000–3000 rpm. On amazon.co.uk the height field prints 2 metres while the bullets keep the 15 metre head. Gardena's English manual puts suction at about 3 metres and pumping height at about 30 metres. Do not read the amazon 30 metre field as suction. The hose has to match the port. ESENO's connectors are Hozelock-style 13 mm, with no hose in the box. Draper includes two 13 mm adaptors and no hose. Flintronic includes one 2 metre hose, so you still supply the second pipe. A 13 mm garden hose will not seal on a 19 mm port. Who those rows are for is the best drill pump page.

The drill and the duty limit

The cordless drill in the shed is not automatically enough. Clarke asks for 350 W. Gardena's manual cites 450 W or 600 W. Ausla is the only kept listing with a stated shank, at 6.35 mm. ESENO prefers a mains drill. The flow claim is tied to speed, and we did not measure it. ESENO's 3000 litres per hour is stated at 3000 rpm. Flintronic's bullets say about 15 litres per minute at 1500 rpm and about 30 at 3000 rpm, while the title says 900 litres per hour. Gardena allows about 12 seconds of dry running. Draper says stop if it has not primed in about 10 seconds. Outdoors, a corded drill wants a 30 mA RCD. Arrows and priming are on how to use a drill pump.

How to read this amazon.co.uk set

Sort by what the reviews did. On 19 October 2026, FOCCTS scores 2.5 from 180 reviews, Ausla and JASOLYI are 1.0 from two reviews each, and Tarqite's three stored UK texts describe no pump-out. A self-priming title under £12 is not evidence of flow. From about £14 the same checks still apply. Draper is 3.4 from 420 and Flintronic is 3.8 from 598, with two flow figures that disagree. ESENO is 4.2 from 3,899 and Gardena is 4.4 from 4,395. This page does not crown one.

Common questions

What should I check before the price?
Check the liquid, then whether any height figure is labelled as suction. A pump at £8 with gasoline in the title is not a bargain beside a £15 pump whose reviews describe a water butt.
Is a higher litres-per-minute number a better pump?
Not here. FOCCTS claims 40 litres per minute and scores 2.5 from 180 reviews. ESENO's 3000 litres per hour is stated at 3000 rpm, and we did not measure it. Flintronic's title says 900 litres per hour while the field says 30 litres per minute.
Is 15 metres or 30 metres how far it can suck?
No. Clarke separates about 2 metres of suction from about 15 metres of delivery. Gardena's manual separates about 3 metres of suction from about 30 metres of pumping height. An amazon field that prints 30 metres is not a suction height.
Do I need 13 mm or 19 mm hose?
Match the port. ESENO and Draper are in the 13 mm class. Clarke asks for 19 mm inside diameter, and reviewers bought that hose and the clamps. A 13 mm garden hose will not seal on a 19 mm port.
Can I use the cordless drill I already own?
For a short clear-water job, sometimes. ESENO prefers a mains drill, and Clarke asks for at least 350 W. Reviews include a water butt a Clarke pump did not empty. As the battery falls, rpm falls, and these flow claims are written at a stated speed.
When is £8 too cheap to trust?
When the stored reviews never show water moving. Tarqite at £7.97 has five reviews and no pump-out in the three UK texts we kept. Wjelet, also £7.97, is 2.1 from 42, with failures on first use. The self-priming line at that price is not a test.
