Searching for dowel pins or dowel rods returns both, because the word covers a hidden glued peg and a length of stock you can still see. If the piece disappears inside a drawer, chair or cabinet joint, buy a short fluted pin. If you need a visible stick for macramé, a model or a cake support, buy a rod. What a pin is for

A dowel pin is the short peg that vanishes inside two pieces of wood. The sizes that repeat here are 6 x 30 mm, 8 x 40 mm and 10 x 40 mm. YYTOL is 300 pins of 6 x 30 mm, ribbed and tapered, at £4.77. A flute or rib gives PVA a path in a blind hole. Drill at the stated diameter. “90 assorted” is not 30 of each. What a rod is for

A dowel rod is the long, smooth stick. Lengths here run from about 200 mm to 380 mm, a different object from a 30 mm pin even at the same thickness. ANDSHUAI lists ten smooth rods at 6 mm x 30 cm for £3.99, with bamboo in a bullet and wood in the material field. AXHOME’s bullets say thirty rods at 5 mm x 20 cm for £4.49, while the included-components field names a three-piece tyre inflator adaptor set. Thicker rods stay visible. Trustleaf lists ten birch rods at 10 mm x 300 mm for £6.37, beside reports of about 9.1–9.6 mm. Coowayze lists ten at 12.5 mm x 30 cm for £6.99 and six at 19 mm x 38 cm for £10.99, and both files share 4.6 from 832. None of these listings is a food-contact or toy test. Cutting a rod into pins

You can saw a rod into short pegs. Cutting alone does not make a fluted pin. A piece from ANDSHUAI’s 6 mm x 30 cm sticks, or from Trustleaf’s 10 mm birch, stays smooth until you add a glue groove and a chamfer. Wonkee Donkee Tools states the limit: the offcut has no flute unless you make one. Drilling the hole larger so the smooth peg enters leaves the joint loose. Sawing is a fair fallback for two pegs already in the shed. It is a poor plan for a run of cabinet joints, where a ribbed 6 x 30 mm pin already has the groove. Do not breathe the sawdust.

Titles that use both words

Amazon titles often say pins and rods in one line. The length decides. YYTOL at 6 x 30 mm is a pin. ANDSHUAI at 6 mm x 30 cm is a rod. Read the size, the form, and whether a groove is named. XFentech does not name grooves in the bullets, and only a review mentions them. If the goods do not match the description, section 11 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 applies, and the short-term right to reject is 30 days. Common questions

Which one repairs a drawer?
Use a pin when the missing part was a wooden peg and you have measured the hole. A 6 x 30 mm pin suits a small cabinet socket. An 8 x 40 mm or 10 x 40 mm pin suits a larger one. A 300 mm rod will not hide there unless you cut it, and that offcut still has no flute. A metal cam bolt is a different spare.
Can I saw a dowel rod into dowel pins?
You can saw a rod into short lengths. They are fluted pins only after you add a glue groove and a chamfer, at the diameter you measured. ANDSHUAI or Trustleaf offcuts will do for a couple of pegs tonight. Opening the hole so a smooth peg fits leaves the joint loose. For a row of new holes, buy pre-cut pins.
Why are dowel pins grooved?
The groove, flute or rib lets glue and air leave a blind hole. A smooth rod has no such path, so joinery pins are grooved and craft rods are sold sanded. XFentech does not name grooves in the bullets, and only a review mentions them. Do not assume that pack is fluted until you see the pieces.
Are longer dowel rods stronger?
Length is not a strength score, and this page does not claim either form is stronger. A 19 mm Coowayze rod and a 6 mm YYTOL pin are different objects. Smooth mouldings are often softwood and fluted pins often hardwood, but that is a warning, not a test of these packs. Match the form to the job, then measure.

Which of these packs is a pin and which is a rod?
PanBeiQi, XFentech, Nebulixq, ShiFaKa, Gunwon and YYTOL are pins. ANDSHUAI, AXHOME, LYJinJuHang, Trustleaf and both Coowayze listings are rods. If the title mixes the words, use the length: about 30–50 mm for a pin and about 200–380 mm for a rod. If the count field and the size line disagree, trust the sizes you can measure.
