Best mixed pin box when the hole is unknown

When you have not measured, choose a short fluted pin box, not a 300 mm rod. XFentech states 90 pieces at £4.49 as 30 each of 6 x 30 mm, 8 x 40 mm and 10 x 40 mm. PanBeiQi is the same sizes and price if you want 4.4 from 3,255, though you sort a mixed box yourself. YYTOL’s 300 pieces of only 6 x 30 mm, at £4.77, fall through an 8 mm shelf hole. If you have already measured, a single size is the better spend.

Best single size when you already measured

A mixed box stops being the best value once the hole has a number. YYTOL suits only a run of 6 mm joints: 300 ribbed pins, tapered at both ends, 6 x 30 mm, £4.77, rated 4.1 from 50. One long review calls those pins brittle, so the piece count is not a strength claim. An 8 mm or 10 mm hole makes the whole tub the wrong product. On 16 October 2026 Screwfix listed Easyfix 100-packs, VAT included, at £2.48 for 6 x 30 mm, £3.29 for 8 x 40 mm and £4.49 for 10 x 40 mm. A hundred pins of one measured size can undercut a mixed 90 at the same £4.49. If you need a 300 mm stick, leave the pin aisle.

Best rod only if the job is a stick

Buy a rod when the job is a craft stick. Do not buy one to replace a cabinet pin. Cutting a 300 mm rod into 30 mm plugs leaves no flute for the glue. The dowel pins or dowel rods page keeps that choice in one place. ANDSHUAI is the cheap thin option: 10 sticks, 6 mm by 30 cm, at £3.99. The listing says bamboo in one place and wood in another, and bamboo is a grass, not a hardwood. Buyers have reported twisted sticks, so sight one on the bench before you build around it. Ratings that do not travel

Both Coowayze packs show 4.6 from 832 and the same review text. The 12.5 mm pack is 10 rods and the 19 mm pack is 6, so the repeated number counts one shared block twice. A comment that 28 of 30 pieces arrived does not belong on the six-rod pack. AXHOME’s bullets describe about 5 mm by 200 mm, 30 pieces, at £4.49, with 5.0 from six ratings. The same listing names a tyre-inflator adaptor set, which is a reason to skip it. LYJinJuHang at £2.69 has no rating line in the file we held.

Which pack is best if I do not know the size?
Choose XFentech if you want 30 each of 6 x 30 mm, 8 x 40 mm and 10 x 40 mm written down, at £4.49. Choose PanBeiQi if you want 4.4 from 3,255 on those same sizes and you will sort an unsorted box. Choose ShiFaKa at £7.99 if you need eight lengths up to 10 x 50 mm. Leave YYTOL unless the hole turns out to be 6 mm.
Which pack is best if I know I need 8 mm?
A trade hundred-pack is the better buy once 8 mm is certain. On 16 October 2026 an Easyfix 100-pack of 8 x 40 mm was £3.29 at Screwfix, including VAT, against £4.49 for a mix that also contains 6 mm and 10 mm. TIMCO fluted beech is the same idea in a named timber. Buy an Amazon mix only if you still want the other two sizes, and check that 40 mm fits the socket.
Is the 4.6 from 832 a reason to buy both Coowayze packs?
No. Both files show 4.6 from 832 and the same review text. The 12.5 mm pack is 10 birch rods at £6.99. The 19 mm pack is 6 birch rods at £10.99. Choose the diameter you measured. The shared line is not two piles of 832 reviews, and a remark about 28 of 30 pieces does not describe the six-rod pack.
Is 300 pieces better value than 90?
Only when every hole is 6 x 30 mm. YYTOL’s 300 pins cost £4.77, so the price per pin looks low beside a £4.49 mix of 90. That mix also includes 8 mm and 10 mm. If you need those, the spare 6 mm pins are leftovers, not value. A Screwfix 100-pack of one known size can be cheaper still.
Are trade beech pins better than these Amazon mixes?
They are the better buy when the size is known and you want kiln-dried beech, tapered and fluted, which is how TIMCO describes its pins from about £1.03. They are the worse buy when the hole might be 6, 8 or 10 mm, because one size cannot cover the other two. UJK’s compressed beech pins assume you already own a jig. This is not a laboratory ranking of strength.
Who should avoid the seconds 10 mm rods?
Avoid Trustleaf if the hole must be a true 10 mm. It is 10 birch rods, 10 mm by 300 mm, sold as seconds at £6.37, and buyers report calliper readings around 9.1–9.6 mm beside a ±0.1 mm claim. If about 9.5 mm would still do a craft job, the seconds price is a different decision. The 4.2 from 437 does not measure the diameter for you.
