Wooden dowels buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You have a drawer that rocks, or a chair rail that has come apart, and amazon.co.uk puts a 30 mm fluted pin beside a 300 mm smooth rod. This wooden dowels buying guide sets the order: form, then the hole you measured, then whether the pack contains that size. The [wooden dowels comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/wooden-dowels) lists the twelve packs. Entry pins here are about £3.59 to £4.77, a wide assortment is £7.99, and rods run from about £2.69 to £10.99. A cheap rod still fails a cabinet hole, so start with the form. Peter F. read those listings on 16 October 2026. Nothing was callipered in a lab, and a qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Pin or rod

A wooden dowel here is a short fluted pin, usually 30 to 50 mm, or a smooth rod of about 200 to 380 mm. The pin locates a glued wood joint. The rod is a stick for a model, a cake support or macramé. The flute, or rib, lets glue and air leave a closed hole. A smooth 300 mm rod traps the glue and leaves spare length sticking out. The diameters can look close and the jobs are different. Read that split on dowel pins or dowel rods, then measure the hole.

Diameter before brand

Match the diameter to the hole you measured. Trade packs repeat 6 x 30 mm, 8 x 40 mm and 10 x 40 mm. Wolfcraft’s maker’s guide pairs 6 mm with board about 12 to 14 mm thick, 8 mm with about 15 to 18 mm, and 10 mm with about 19 to 30 mm. Leave a couple of millimetres for glue, and treat “M6” on these pins as about 6 mm. How deep to drill stays on the jointing page. A quarter inch is 6.35 mm and three-eighths of an inch is 9.525 mm. If you drill the next metric size up, the joint goes slack. Measure the empty socket with a calliper or a known drill bit.

What the pack actually contains

Ninety assorted pins are not thirty of each size, and 300 pins of 6 x 30 mm miss a 10 mm hole. YYTOL is that tub: 300 of 6 x 30 mm at £4.77. Buy it when you have measured 6 mm. It is a poor buy for an 8 mm or 10 mm chair rail. ShiFaKa states eight sizes and 225 pieces at £7.99. Gunwon’s 21 pieces at £3.59 cover one small repair if the diameter matches. On 16 October 2026 Screwfix listed Easyfix 100-packs at £2.48 for 6 x 30 mm, £3.29 for 8 x 40 mm and £4.49 for 10 x 40 mm, including VAT. Use a mixed box while the hole is unknown. Who each pack suits is on best wooden dowels.

Labels that are not tests

Birch, beech, eucalyptus, bamboo and “lotus wood” are labels. A line that only says wood has not named a species. SCF’s “Made to Din 68150” is that seller’s sentence, not a UK rule. BS EN 14592 covers steel fasteners, so it does not grade these wooden pins. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 11, the goods should match a stated count or diameter, and you have 30 days to reject a mismatch. Call a joiner for stairs, a load-bearing bed rail or antique work. Flat-pack pins are on wooden dowels for furniture repair.

Common questions

What size wooden dowel do I need for 18 mm board?
If a pin is missing, measure that socket and match it. If no hole exists yet, Wolfcraft’s maker’s guide puts 8 mm with board about 15 to 18 mm thick, so 18 mm board sits on 8 mm. It pairs 6 mm with about 12 to 14 mm and 10 mm with about 19 to 30 mm. The table is the maker’s guide, not proof your carcass followed it.
Are 6 mm and a quarter inch the same hole?
A quarter inch is 6.35 mm, so the holes differ. A 6 mm pin is small in a quarter-inch socket, and a quarter-inch pin is tight in a 6 mm hole. Three-eighths of an inch is 9.525 mm, which is neither 8 mm nor 10 mm. Buy and drill in the scale the furniture was made in.
Should I buy a mixed box or 100 of one size?
Buy 100 of one size when the hole is measured and you will use that diameter again. On 16 October 2026 an Easyfix 100-pack of 6 x 30 mm was £2.48 including VAT at Screwfix, against about £4.49 for a 90-piece mix such as PanBeiQi or XFentech. A mixed box is only a hedge while the size is unknown. YYTOL’s 300 pins are still only 6 x 30 mm, at £4.77.
Does birch or beech matter?
Diameter and form matter more than the species name. Birch, beech, eucalyptus, bamboo and “lotus wood” are listing words, not a joint test. Use the name to avoid a species, and set it aside when the choice is a measured 8 mm fluted pin or a smooth rod. If the listing says only wood, the species was not stated.
Why would a 10 mm dowel be loose in a 10 mm hole?
The title and the stick can disagree. Trustleaf’s 10 mm by 300 mm seconds, at £6.37, sit next to reports of about 9.1 to 9.6 mm. A rod near 9.3 mm has no grip in a true 10 mm hole, and drilling the next size up creates the same slack. Check seconds with a calliper. The star line is reviews, not a measured diameter.
Which listing fields should I not trust on their own?
A star rating is not a diameter, and a components line can name another product. AXHOME’s bullets say 5 mm by 200 mm pieces at £4.49, while the included-components field names a tyre inflator adaptor set. Coowayze’s 4.6 from 832 is one shared review text on two rod packs. SCF’s “Made to Din 68150” is that seller’s sentence. When two fields disagree, the listing has not settled.
