Roller shutter tubular motor

Updated: October 2026

You are replacing the motor in a window shutter, a shop front, or a garage curtain. A roller shutter tubular motor has to match the barrel you have measured. If that curtain is a way out or a workplace door, it also has to state a manual override, and someone who can do the electrical work has to connect it. The ten amazon.co.uk listings in our [tubular motor comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/tubular-motor) are the examples, from the 15 October 2026 scrape. Peter F. used those listings and public UK sources, and did not weigh a curtain. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

A window shutter on a 60 mm barrel

A window shutter that is not the way out of the house is usually a 60 mm barrel. The listings that name that shaft are the superrollo pair. The RM10MM is 10 Nm, at £46.34, limited to 4.2 m² or 22 kg. The RM30MM is 30 Nm, at £68.84, limited to 12 m² or 66 kg. Neither prints a voltage or states an override. Eurodrive's catalogue, via Fox Doors, lists 30 Nm at 75 kg on a 60 mm tube. You do not paste the superrollo 66 kg onto that 75 kg. If you need the voltage on the page, skip them. The check order is on the tubular motor buying guide.

A garage or doorway curtain that must still open

A garage door is a way out. Override is stated on the Neco 60 Nm, the Neco ED2/180-M, and the Ellard 100 Nm. The Neco 60 Nm is £74.99 and 230 V, and the tube is not printed. The Neco 180 Nm is £88.99, with a 59 mm body, and it does not print SW60. In England, Approved Document P's non-notifiable example is an electric garage door on an existing isolator. A new circuit is notifiable. The work still has to be electrically safe. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland do not copy that paragraph. The screw sequence, once the motor is isolated, is on the set tubular motor limits page.

A shop shutter

A shop shutter is work equipment under PUWER. These listings do not print a service interval. You still need a stated torque, a stated override if people must get out when the power fails, and a competent person for the connection. BS EN IEC 60335-2-97 covers many shutter, awning, and blind drives. Some garage-door drives fall under a different part. None of these listings declares which part it meets. If the only manual is not in English, the Generico page says so. Call a professional for a new circuit, a damaged cable, a fire exit, or this shutter.

What does not belong on the shutter

The Rollerhouse is a rechargeable kit for a 38 mm tube and a stated pull of 4 kg. It will not lift a shop curtain. That split is on the roller blind motor or tubular motor page. A 97 mm round adaptor is the other false match. The generic 100 Nm prints 230 V and that round collar. Override is not stated. A collar of that size does not fit a 60 mm octagonal shaft.

Common questions

Is a window shutter motor the same purchase as a garage-door motor?
Not here. A window shutter on a 60 mm barrel can be the superrollo RM10MM or RM30MM, which print SW60 and a lift line and do not print an override or a voltage. A garage curtain that must open in a power cut needs a stated override. That is on the Neco 60 Nm, the Neco 180 Nm, and the Ellard 100 Nm. There is no single newton-metre figure for a garage door.
What torque is enough for a light SW60 window shutter?
The RM10MM states 10 Nm and up to 4.2 m² or 22 kg, at £46.34. The RM30MM states 30 Nm and up to 12 m² or 66 kg, at £68.84. Eurodrive's 30 Nm at 75 kg, up to 3 m on a 60 mm tube, is a different maker's table. Use the line on the listing you are buying, and skip both if you need a printed override.
When does a shutter need a manual override?
When the curtain is a way out and you still need to open it if the power fails. Override is stated on the Neco 60 Nm, the Neco ED2/180-M, and the Ellard 100 Nm. It is not stated on the superrollo pair, the Ellard 140 Nm, or the generic 100 Nm. A window shutter that is not an exit can be ordered without that crank. A garage door should not.
Who should connect a 230 V shutter motor?
Someone who can do the work safely. In England, an electric garage door on an existing isolator is Approved Document P's non-notifiable example, and a new circuit is notifiable. The work still has to be electrically safe. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland do not copy that paragraph. Isolate before you touch the motor. A damaged cable or a fire exit is a professional job.
Does a shop shutter change the rules?
It adds a workplace duty. A shop shutter is work equipment under PUWER. These listings do not print a service interval. You still match the barrel, and you still want a stated override if staff have to get out. The seller's kilogrammes are not a risk assessment. A competent person connects it.
Can you trust "up to 220 kg" on the Neco 180 Nm?
You can trust it as the seller's sentence. The listing also prints 180 Nm, 230 V, 540 W, 7 rpm, override, a 4-minute duty, and a 59 mm body, at £88.99, with no star line. 220 kg is not a weight of your curtain, and it is not a reason to ignore the body size.
Will a 97 mm round adaptor fit a 60 mm octagonal shaft?
No. The generic 100 Nm states a 60 mm body and a 97 mm round adaptor, plus 230 V, and it does not state an override. SW60 on the superrollo listings is a 60 mm shaft of a different profile. Measure the end you have before you treat "60 mm" in two cells as the same part.
