Tubular motor buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are about to order a tubular motor for a window shutter, a shop curtain, or a light indoor blind. The useful check is not the largest newton-metre figure on the page. You measure the tube, then read torque against a named chart, then see whether the listing prints a supply, a switch that is actually in the box, and a manual override if the curtain is a way out. The ten amazon.co.uk listings in our [tubular motor comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/tubular-motor) are the examples. Peter F. used those listings and public UK sources, and did not run a lab test. Measure the tube before you read the newton-metres

A tubular motor sits inside the roller tube, so the crown has to match the barrel. SW60 on both superrollo listings is a 60 mm shaft. The Rollerhouse kit states a 1.5 inch or 38 mm tube. The generic 100 Nm states a 97 mm round adaptor, which will not drop into a 60 mm octagonal window shaft. If you have not measured the shaft, stop before you compare newton-metres. Once a collar fits, the stops are on the set tubular motor limits page.

Read torque only against a named chart

Newton-metres are not a weight you can lift on every tube. Eurodrive's catalogue, hosted by Fox Doors, marks one table "correct up to 3 m high" and lists 30 Nm at 75 kg on a 60 mm tube. SIMU says its own charts are not universal, so you do not paste that 75 kg onto a superrollo bullet. The RM10MM states 10 Nm and up to 4.2 m² or 22 kg. The RM30MM states 30 Nm and up to 12 m² or 66 kg. If the chart does not name the tube and the height, you do not have a chart.

Check supply, the switch, and the override

230 V is printed on the Neco 60 Nm, the Neco 180 Nm, and the generic 100 Nm. Both superrollo motors and both Ellard listings do not print a voltage. Only the Rollerhouse states a remote and an 8.4 V charger, and it does not state 230 V mains. The superrollo bullets say a wall switch or a timer. That mention is not a switch in the box. Manual override is in the title of the Neco 60 Nm, the Neco 180 Nm, and the Ellard 100 Nm. Window, shop, and garage curtains are on the roller shutter tubular motor page.

Who connects it in the UK

In England, Approved Document P and regulation 12(6A) make a new circuit, a consumer-unit change, or work in a bath or shower zone notifiable. The document's non-notifiable example is connecting an electric garage door to an existing isolator. The work still has to be electrically safe. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland do not copy that paragraph. Isolate the supply before you touch the motor. BS EN IEC 60335-2-97 covers many shutter, awning, and blind drives, and some garage-door drives fall under a different part. None of these listings declares which part it meets. If the only manual is not in English and the motor is mains, stop. A 38 mm kit and a 230 V shutter motor are different purchases, which is the split on the roller blind motor or tubular motor page.

Common questions

What do you measure before you look at newton-metres?
You measure the tube you already have: the profile, and the size the crown has to enter. On these listings that means an SW60 60 mm shaft on the superrollo pair, a 38 mm blind tube on the Rollerhouse, a 97 mm round adaptor on the generic 100 Nm, or a 59 mm body on the Neco 180 Nm. The Neco 60 Nm does not print a tube size, and UK reviews describe a different adaptor. Newton-metres come after the collar will fit.
Is SW60 the same as a 60 mm octagonal shaft?
On the superrollo RM10MM and RM30MM, SW60 is the name they use for a 60 mm shaft. It is not the Rollerhouse 38 mm tube, and it is not the 97 mm round adaptor on the generic 100 Nm. A 60 mm octagonal crown sold for a named motor body is a matched pair. You still check the end you are holding against that pair before you order.
Can you use a seller's kilogramme line as your curtain weight?
You can use it as that seller's sentence. You cannot use it as a weighing of your curtain. Eurodrive's 30 Nm at 75 kg is one maker's table, up to 3 m, on a 60 mm tube. The superrollo 66 kg line and the Neco "up to 220 kg" line are different sentences. SIMU says charts are not universal. If your tube or your height is not the one in the table, the kilogrammes move.
Which listings print 230 V?
230 V is printed on the Neco 60 Nm, the Neco 180 Nm at 50 Hz, and the generic 100 Nm at 50 Hz. Both superrollo motors and both Ellard listings do not print a voltage. The Rollerhouse states an 8.4 V charger and a remote, and it does not state 230 V mains. A French review that mentions 220 V on the Ttgo is a review, not a specification field.
Does "wall switch or timer" mean a switch is in the box?
On the superrollo RM10MM and RM30MM it does not. The bullets name a wall switch or a timer. The included parts are a drive bearing, an adaptor, a carrier, a locking clip, split pins, and an adjustment tool. No remote is named. You still need a control that suits the circuit you already have, or you ask before you invent one.
What do you do if the only manual is not in English?
You stop if the motor is mains. The Generico TGM5012 listing says the instruction manual is not in English, and it does not print a voltage. One 5.0 from a single review, with no stored text, does not replace those steps. Guessing the limit screws from a photo is not a workaround for a sheet you cannot read.
