Stretch wrap for moving house

Updated: 23 October 2026

Moving morning is when a narrow roll and a bare wooden chest meet. Stretch wrap for moving house keeps drawers shut, holds a blanket in place, and stops a mattress picking up the van floor. It is not a cushion or a dust sheet. You want a clear 400 mm roll, then the spiral on [how to use pallet wrap](/hub/diy-supplies/pe-film/sub/pe-film-how-to-wrap). The other ten listings are on the [PE film comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/pe-film). A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Peter F. used amazon.co.uk review lines and UK removals guides. We did not move a house with each roll.

What the film is for on moving day

The film contains. It does not pad. Phoenix Supplies, writing for UK removals, says stretch wrap should hold a cover and should not be the only shield on a delicate finish. A blanket or pad goes on the wood or the leather first. Wrap on bare walnut or leather and the cling can mark the finish or hold grit against it. Do not seal damp furniture. Trapped moisture is how a finish clouds. Waterproof wording on a listing is not permission to leave a mattress in the rain. Start at the plinth, two turns, then a spiral with about half the width overlapping, then a tuck. That overlap figure is from packaging guides, not a test of these ASINs.

Drawers, doors, and mattresses

Light clothes can stay in a drawer if the chest is still a weight you can lift. Empty heavy drawers and anything fragile. Van 247 says to empty heavy drawers or secure them over a blanket, and not to overtighten runners. Film stops a light drawer walking open. It does not make a chest of books a one-person lift. Wardrobe doors get a blanket on the face if the finish matters, then film so they cannot swing. JeeJaan reviews mention doors that stayed shut. That is containment, not proof the film was kind to bare paint. A mattress can be wrapped so the van floor stays off the cover. Put a sheet on ticking you care about, and do not wrap a damp mattress. Glass, stone, and a loose mirror need a crate, not a spiral of film.

400 mm, not 13 cm

The rolls that match a wardrobe are 400 mm wide: Rainberg, both G4GADGET stretch rolls, TPZ, both Triplast colours, and JeeJaan. WELSTIK is about 13 cm wide, with blue handles, about £14.99. The handles suit a suitcase. On a double wardrobe you will still be circling. A sofa is a two-person job in reviews of the 23 micron roll and of the £5.99 roll. The 23 micron listing, about £8.99, 400 mm by 220 m, 4.6 from 3,899 reviews, is the thicker furniture option. The pack field says 2 and the item count says 1. Several rolls here are described as nearer 100 to 150 m. Plan one substantial piece per disputed roll. That metre claim is in the PE film buying guide.

Clear, and not a dust sheet

Prefer clear film so a room label stays visible. RemovalReviews recommends clear wrap for that reason. It is not a test of these ASINs. Black Triplast is the comparison top pick on review volume, at about £6.79, and it hides the load. One UK review says the black film holds dust through static. The £5.99 G4GADGET roll is clear, 400 mm by 200 m, and it states no micron. One buyer tried it as floor film and then said it is wrapping film. TOUKBEAU is the flat sheet if a drape is what you wanted. Clear Triplast is about £7.99 with a printed weight of 100 g. TPZ clear is about £6.99, also 17 micron, with cling reviews that disagree. None of them is a reason to wrap suspected asbestos. HSE says untrained householders should not remove it.

Common questions

Can I leave clothes in the drawers?
Light clothes can stay if the drawer is secured and the chest is still a weight you can lift. Empty heavy books, tools, and anything fragile before you wrap. Film stops a drawer walking open. It does not make a full chest safe on a staircase.
Do I wrap a mattress directly?
You can wrap a mattress so the van floor stays off the cover, and Triplast clear reviews mention that job. Put a sheet or a pad on a ticking you care about, and do not seal a damp mattress. Waterproof wording is not permission to leave the bed in the rain.
Clear or black for a move?
Clear. You need to see labels and damage without cutting the film in the van. Black hides the load, which suits a yard more than a house move, and one review of black Triplast mentions static dust. Use black on moving day only when concealment matters more than reading your own tape. The spiral is the same either way.
Is a 13 cm roll enough?
Not for a wardrobe or a sofa, if you want the job finished in a few turns. WELSTIK is about 13 cm wide with handles, which is a parcel and luggage width. A 400 mm roll covers a furniture face much faster.
Will the film mark wood or leather?
It can, if it is the only layer. UK removals guidance says the film should hold a blanket or pad, not sit on a delicate finish by itself. Grit trapped under cling prints into soft wood and leather. Pad first, and keep the piece dry.
Can I use the same roll as a dust sheet on the floor?
No. One buyer of the £5.99 roll tried it on the floor and then said it is wrapping film. It clings to itself and it does not lie like a decorator's sheet. Use a flat polythene sheet if you need a drape.
How many people does a sofa take?
At least two is what reviewers of the G4GADGET furniture wraps described, on the 23 micron roll and on the £5.99 roll. A small item you can walk around is still a one-person job if the start is already anchored.
