How to repair a tear in a leather sofa

Updated: 23 October 2026

A tear in a leather sofa can be a pale scratch, a tuft a cat pulled out, or a hole with foam behind it. Those three marks do not take the same first step. This page is about how to repair a tear in a leather sofa when the damage is still small, and about the point where you call an upholsterer. Car seats stay on the main comparison. Once you have chosen filler or a roll, the sequence is on [how to use a leather repair kit](/hub/diy-supplies/leather-repair-kit/sub/leather-repair-kit-how-to-use). The eight kits are on the [leather repair kit comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/leather-repair-kit). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What kind of damage is on the sofa

A scratch is a line in the colour coat, and the leather is still there. A cat pluck is a small tuft pulled up. An open tear is a gap: you can press the edges and see cloth or foam. A recolouring balm only disguises lighter scratches. It does not rebuild a missing surface, and it is not one of the eight kits here. If the leather is firm, a filler in the right family can sit in the line. If your finger goes through, you are past a scratch. The filler versus patch page is the method once you know which of the three you have.

What a repair kit can change

A filler changes a shallow crack on coated leather if the palette can reach the shade after it dries. It does not replace a panel. A MastaPlasta roll, 150 × 10 cm at about £19.95, covers the mark and is meant to be seen. A sub-patch is cloth behind the tear. cenozo’s two backing fabrics are that hidden job. The roll is the cover on top. Super glue dries rigid and cracks. A kit will not promise an invisible, permanent sofa.

When the tear is too big

Use the limit printed for the product you buy. BUDOCI’s 1 inch hole and 2 inch crack are not a licence you can copy onto another box. Furniture Clinic’s tear guide moves you off a small kit when the area is larger than a tennis ball. MastaPlasta prints no maximum. The patch has to cover the hole and sit on sound surface. A 2 inch dog tear is what one STARTSO black reviewer tried to stop from spreading. If the foam stands proud, call an upholsterer. Checkatrade’s new-cover example is about £1,500 for a 2-seater and £1,750 for a 3-seater.

Seats, arms, and pets

A back may keep a thin filler line. The front edge of a cushion rubs every time someone stands. Willand’s car-seat note says a self-adhesive patch is quick, shows an edge, and is weaker where the surface keeps bending. One STARTSO black finish cured rock hard, and that buyer doubted it would survive sitting. Feel a dried test spot first. A small patch over a dog hole was pulled off the same night, and a larger piece stayed. Keep claws off it for the 24 hours on the listing.

When to call a professional

Call an upholsterer when foam is showing and the surround is crumbling, when a seam has split, when peeling runs across a whole arm, or when a recliner has failed. Nu-Rest draws a similar line for large tears, burns, deep cracking, and structural damage. A water drop that soaks in is Furniture Clinic’s check for aniline. A kit that arrives solid is a claim against the kit’s seller. A 2025 amendment dropped the display label from 30 October 2025. It did not turn a DIY patch into a fire certificate.

Common questions

Can a kit fix a tear in a leather sofa?
It can improve a small scratch or a short crack on coated leather, or cover a hole that still has sound material around it. Filler tries to blend. A MastaPlasta roll covers and stays visible. Foam, a split seam, or crumbling edges are beyond these boxes. BUDOCI excludes holes over 1 inch and cracks over 2 inches. Measure first.
What is the difference between a cat pluck and a hole?
A pluck is fibre and finish lifted in a small fleck. The leather is still continuous. A hole is a gap you can open. Furniture Clinic treats lighter scratches as a recolour and a missing surface as a fill. A balm will not rebuild a pluck that has gone through. If you can see foam, you have left the scratch stage.
What if I can see the foam?
Foam means the cover has failed there. A backing cloth behind the tear, then filler, is the specialist sequence, and only if the surround is still strong. cenozo includes two backing fabrics for a small repair. A front patch hides foam only when its edges stick to leather that is still attached. Crumbling foam is an upholstery job. Do not pack the hole with super glue.
Will a patch survive on the seat, not just the back?
The seat flexes more than the back. UK reviews include patches that stayed on sofa bases, and a small dog-hole patch pulled off overnight. Cut a wider overlap on a seat. One paste repair cured rock hard, so test filler somewhere hidden. Give a MastaPlasta bond the stated 24 hours before heavy use.
Is a balm enough for scratches?
A recolouring balm can disguise a lighter scratch. It does not rebuild the surface, which is Furniture Clinic’s split between a quick recolour and a full repair. Darker scratches need colour that sits on the leather. Balm is not one of the eight kits here. If a nail catches in the scratch, you are past a wipe-on colour.
How big is too big for a DIY kit?
Use the figure on the product. BUDOCI: holes over 1 inch, cracks over 2 inches. Furniture Clinic’s kit page: a rip or hole of about 5 cm, and a tennis-ball area beyond a small kit. The Scratch Doctor’s 5 by 5 inches is that brand’s claim. MastaPlasta needs sound leather around the hole and prints no maximum. Foam or a seam ends the DIY either way.
When do I call an upholsterer?
Call when foam is exposed and the surround is crumbling, a seam or recliner has failed, peeling runs across a panel, or the leather is aniline, suede, or nubuck and you cannot accept a mark. Deep cracking and burns sit on the same list. A small coated scratch can stay DIY. Pet damage is not automatically the retailer’s bill. A faulty kit is a claim against the kit seller.
