Leather repair kit buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are looking at a brown sofa arm with a cat scratch, or a black car seat with a small hole, and every amazon.co.uk title says leather repair kit. The box may be two jet-black tubes, six light shades, or a 150 × 10 cm self-adhesive roll. This leather repair kit buying guide is the decision before you sort by stars: method, colour family, leather type, and the size limit on that product. The [leather repair kit comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/leather-repair-kit) lists the eight kits we kept, from about £9.89 to about £19.95. What you are actually buying

A paste or liquid filler tries to sit in the scratch and disappear once the colour is right. A self-adhesive roll is a cover you cut and press on, and a close colour is treated as enough. Fillers here run from about £9.89 to about £15.99. The two MastaPlasta rolls are about £19.95 each, black or tan, listed at 150 × 10 cm, with a 24-hour full cure. If the repair has to sit level with the leather, the roll still shows an edge. Specialist kits list glue, filler, a sub-patch, and a finish. Furniture Clinic’s kit starts at £26.99. Several Amazon boxes only list coloured compound. The filler versus patch page stays on that choice.

Colour family before star rating

Brown paste will not mix a pale cream, and a white-beige kit will not reach a mid brown. Vigorder, at about £14.99, names tan, walnut, and chocolate. STARTSO WORLD LRK03, at about £15.29, claims 10 compound colours and does not name them. cenozo, at about £15.99, is cream, white, light grey, beige, and natural tones. A UK reviewer with a mid-beige chair said the only darker mixer was grey. BUDOCI, at about £9.89, is two jet-black tubes, while the manual says match any colour. Both MastaPlasta listings print 4.4 from 5,707, so count that pool once. cenozo’s 152 includes only four UK reviews in the file. Stars do not say whether the tubes reach your sofa.

Coated leather, aniline, and peeling faux

Coated leather, with a finish on the surface, is what these paste kits are aimed at. Aniline is different. Furniture Clinic’s cleaning guide uses a water drop: if it soaks in, the leather is absorbent. Buffalo Leather’s £27 colour-matched kit excludes aniline, suede, nubuck, perforated, gloss, and two-tone. MastaPlasta’s FAQ says lifting a patch off aniline can leave a mark, and peeling bonded leather may come away with the patch. If faux film is lifting across a whole arm, you are past a small kit.

How big a repair the kit is for

Size limits belong to the seller who printed them. None of them is a rule for every box around £15. MastaPlasta prints no maximum. The patch must cover the damage, sit on sound surface, follow contours, and not bridge a seam. STARTSO’s black kit has no printed limit, and one UK reviewer used it on a tear of about 2 inches. If foam is showing and the surround is crumbling, call an upholsterer. Checkatrade’s example of a new cover is about £1,500 for a 2-seater and £1,750 for a 3-seater.

What to have in the box

Before you pay, read the included-components line. cenozo lists two backing fabrics. Vigorder lists backing fabric without a count. The MastaPlasta roll is the patch on top, not a hidden sub-patch. Water resistant on Vigorder and the MastaPlasta listings is seller wording, not a British Standard. A tube that arrives solid, as one WYCOON reviewer found, is a fault under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 against the kit’s seller. A home repair does not recertify the sofa under the furniture fire regulations.

Common questions

What should a leather repair kit contain?
A specialist kit separates glue, a sub-patch, filler, colour, and a finish. On this amazon.co.uk shelf, many boxes are coloured compound and a short instruction. cenozo lists six light-shade tubes, brushes, a spatula, gloves, a cup, and two backing fabrics. Vigorder names backing fabric. If the hole is open and the listing mentions neither fabric nor a roll, you are buying filler for a surface that still has something behind it.
Do I need filler or a self-adhesive patch?
Filler is the try when the leather is coated, the mark is small, and the palette can reach the colour after it dries. A roll is the try when you will accept a visible cover on sound material. The MastaPlasta rolls are about £19.95. The fillers here are about £9.89 to about £15.99. Paste can cure hard or miss the shade. A patch can lift if the piece is too small. Choose the method, then the listing.
How do I know if my sofa is aniline?
Put a drop of water on a hidden area. If it soaks in, Furniture Clinic treats that as absorbent, aniline-type leather. Coated leather beads. Buffalo Leather’s £27 kit excludes aniline, suede, and nubuck. MastaPlasta says pulling a patch off aniline can leave a mark. A title that says every leather type is not a substitute for that check.
Will a brown kit match a cream sofa?
Vigorder is tan, walnut, and chocolate. cenozo is the white-beige kit, and a UK reviewer could not reach a mid beige because the darker mixer was grey. Black tubes, including BUDOCI’s pair, stay black. Match the family on the box to the sofa before you read the stars. Brown paste on a cream arm dries as a dark smear.
Is a £10 kit the same as a £27 specialist kit?
BUDOCI at about £9.89 is two black tubes, brushes, a palette, and a scraper, and it excludes holes over 1 inch. Furniture Clinic starts at £26.99 and Buffalo Leather’s colour-matched kit is £27, with exclusions for aniline and two-tone. The Amazon price is lower because the contents are narrower. A low price does not add glue the listing never names.
What size of hole is too big?
Use the limit on the box you buy. BUDOCI excludes holes over 1 inch and cracks over 2 inches. Furniture Clinic’s kit page talks about a rip or hole of about 5 cm, and a tennis-ball area beyond a small kit. The Scratch Doctor’s 5 by 5 inches belongs to that kit. Foam, a split seam, or crumbling leather is an upholsterer’s job. A blank size field is not permission for a cushion-sized tear.
Does water resistant mean a tested waterproof repair?
Water resistant on the Vigorder and MastaPlasta listings is the seller’s wording. Neither cites a British Standard. A rainy car seat and a living-room arm are different jobs. Read the label in the box. If the repair must live outdoors, this set does not give you a soak-test certificate.
