Leather filler vs repair patch

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a hole in a faux sofa arm and two products in the basket, both called a leather repair kit. One is coloured tubes. The other is a self-adhesive roll. Leather filler vs repair patch is that choice, and the methods do not succeed on the same terms. Filler tries to sit level with the surface. A patch is meant to be seen. This page uses the eight listings in the [leather repair kit comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/leather-repair-kit), priced on amazon.co.uk from about £9.89 to about £19.95 on 21 October 2026. Two different repairs

Filler here is paste or liquid. You put it into a scratch and try to make it disappear. A repair patch is the MastaPlasta roll, black or tan, 150 × 10 cm at about £19.95, which you cut and stick on top. A patch is fast, shows an edge, and is weaker where the surface flexes. Liquid filler can blend if you layer it, and it takes more skill. These Amazon boxes do not list grain paper. A sub-patch is fabric behind the leather, then filler on top. That cloth is hidden. MastaPlasta is the surface you see. cenozo’s two backing fabrics are closer to the hidden piece than to a decorative roll.

When filler is the better try

Filler is the better try on a small scratch or crack in coated leather, when you can reach the colour and you will judge it dry. If a water drop soaks in, Furniture Clinic treats the hide as absorbent aniline, and filler is a poor bet. Vigorder at about £14.99 names tan, walnut, and chocolate. cenozo at about £15.99 stopped short of a mid beige for one UK reviewer. Black filler stays black. One STARTSO black finish went rock hard, so test a hidden spot. An open hole with no cloth behind it is a void.

When a patch is the better try

A roll is the better try when the adhesive can grip sound material around the hole. Peeled faux, a cat tear, or a burn you will not blend are the usual cases. MastaPlasta’s FAQ says the patch need not match exactly. The bond strengthens over 24 hours. Chemical cleaners hurt adhesion. Lifting the patch off aniline can leave a mark. In the shared 4.4 from 5,707 pool, counted once, a small piece over a dog hole was pulled off overnight and a larger overlap stayed. The black roll is the top pick when a cover is what you want. The tan roll is camel, not a second proof.

What you pay in this set

Fillers run from about £9.89 to about £15.99. The rolls are about £19.95 each. Buying black and tan is two colours of the same patch. Do not add the 5,707 reviews. Above this shelf, Furniture Clinic starts at £26.99 and Buffalo Leather’s colour-matched kit is £27. About £9.89 buys a small black fill and two reviews. About £15.29 for STARTSO black is the best value filler here on review count, with one hard-cure report.

Which to buy

Buy filler when the mark is a small scratch on coated leather and you will test the colour dry. That points brown sofas toward Vigorder, cream sofas toward cenozo, and black scratches toward STARTSO LRK01. Buy a roll when a hole needs a cover you will see, cut larger than the damage, with 24 hours for the bond. Do both only as cloth behind, filler in the middle, colour on top. A top patch plus a paste smear on the same hole usually fights itself. The steps are on how to use a leather repair kit.

Common questions

Which looks less obvious?
Filler can sit level with coated leather if the dry colour matches. A patch is meant to be seen. MastaPlasta says a close shade and a thin edge can look deliberate, which is a different standard from invisible. One STARTSO repair cured rock hard, so a blend can also look wrong. Judge a filler dab after it dries. Do not expect the roll to disappear.
Which is faster?
The roll is cut and press, with the bond still strengthening for the 24 hours on the listing. Filler is a mix, a test, and thin layers. cenozo claims 10 to 20 minutes in air, or 1 to 2 minutes with a hairdryer. BUDOCI says no heat and gives no minutes. The roll is faster if you accept the edge. Faster is not the same as less visible.
Which is better on a seat I sit on?
A seat flexes and rubs. Patches are weaker where the surface bends, and a UK review lost a small dog-hole patch overnight while a larger overlap stayed. Paste can be the quieter look on a firm coated arm, and one black filler cured too hard to sit on. Use a wide overlap for a roll, or a hidden test for filler, and keep claws off it for a day.
Can a patch fix peeling faux leather?
It can cover a peeled spot when the film around it is still stuck, so the adhesive has sound material. MastaPlasta warns that peeling bonded leather may come away if you lift the patch. A WYCOON reviewer found peeling faux harder to finish with compound than to apply. If the whole arm is flaking, a small kit will not rebond the panel.
Can filler fix a hole with no backing?
Paste needs something behind it. cenozo and Vigorder list backing fabric. The other fillers here do not. Without that cloth, an open hole is a void and the repair sinks. A front roll can hide the hole if the edges land on sound leather. A sub-patch behind the tear is the specialist route, and it is not the MastaPlasta roll.
Is a sub-patch the same as MastaPlasta?
A sub-patch sits behind the leather so filler has a floor. MastaPlasta is a self-adhesive cover on the outside, 150 × 10 cm in this set. cenozo’s two backing fabrics are the closer match to a sub-patch. Using the roll as an internal cloth wastes the adhesive. Read the how-to for the object you actually hold.
Which costs less in this comparison?
The fillers are about £9.89 to about £15.99. The rolls are about £19.95 each. BUDOCI is the cheapest and rests on two reviews. The black MastaPlasta roll costs more and carries the only large review sample, shared with tan. STARTSO black at about £15.29 is the best value filler on its UK review file. A lower price does not include glue the listing never names.
