Garden auger drill bit buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You already own a cordless drill, and the border still needs dozens of holes a trowel makes slow. A garden auger drill bit is the steel spiral that goes in the chuck, so this garden auger drill bit buying guide starts with the hole, then the shank, then the listing. The eleven amazon.co.uk listings on the [Earth auger drill bit comparison](/hub/digging-tools/earth-auger-drill-bit) run from about £11.99 to about £24.99. Tulip depth and fence concrete stay on their own pages. Peter F. used the listings as of 19 October 2026. They are not a laboratory test of steel. What the hole is for

Describe the hole in centimetres before you compare brands. In this set, a bit about 4 cm across and roughly 22 to 42 cm long is the shape sold for one bulb. A bit about 8 to 10 cm across is the shape sold for a shrub, a hedge whip, or a wider plug. Great Circle UK’s table, written for machines as well as bits, splits bores of about 2 to 4 inches from about 4 to 6 inches. That is a sketch, not a measurement of any ASIN here. A 4 cm WORKPRO or K-Brands flight is still a narrow garden spiral. A 10 cm LYFETC flight is still one chuck bit, not a petrol fencing auger. Length is the next trade-off. The green WORKPRO pair is 4 × 22 cm and 8 × 30 cm. The black WORKPRO pair at about £16.99 prints 4 × 42 cm and 9 × 40 cm. K-Brands prints two bits at 41 cm. Single titles run 30, 40, 60, 61, and 81 cm. Thirty centimetres will not make a 600 mm fence footing in one pass. Sixty or eighty centimetres can go deeper in soil you have already judged safe, and the hole is still only as wide as that flight. Who should open which pair is on best garden auger drill bit.

Shank and drill

Listings that state a drive size mostly say a 3/8 in hex, about 10 mm, for a 3/8 in or larger chuck. That is not an SDS shank. Eighteen volts is seller copy, not a British Standard. WORKPRO writes 18 V or higher, with 14 V as a written minimum. K-Brands, Suewidfay, Insaga, and several LYFETC lines suggest 18 V, or a cordless drill from 18 V. A smaller drill can turn a narrow bit in compost and then stall or twist your wrist in clay. BeneLabel reviewers describe a weak drill that stalls, overheats, and in one case burns out. K-Brands reviewers say a hard patch went better when the small bit went first. None of these boxes includes the drill. How the bit turns, and when you stop, is on how to use a garden auger drill bit.

Steel words and a second bit

Steel names here are seller words, not a grade we tested. Manganese steel is not a certificate. The green WORKPRO set says carbon steel in the feedback field and heat-treated steel in the bullets. The £16.99 WORKPRO table says metal. The £19.94 pair says manganese steel. K-Brands says alloy steel, with a rust-resistant coating in the bullets and uncoated in the finish field. The clash to read twice is LYFETC B0G3NK31Y7, titled 8 × 60 cm: bullets say one-piece high-carbon steel, and the technical table says high-speed steel. Both lines are printed. They are not reconciled. A higher price is not better steel. A second bit is often the real upgrade, because one diameter cannot be both a tulip and a shrub. WORKPRO sells a narrow bit plus a wider one three times. K-Brands is 4 cm and 9 cm, both 41 cm long. Suewidfay’s three-piece listing states 4.6 × 37 cm, 8 × 30 cm and 4 × 22 cm. A single 60 or 81 cm flight does not give you a 4 cm bit for crocuses. GardenScout UK treats a chuck bit as the tool for bulbs and bedding, and a separate powerhead as the tool for heavier posts. A wood auger is a different bit.

Check the listing before you pay

Do not average two size fields that disagree. Suewidfay B0DJVS8F14 is titled 10 × 40 cm and 4 × 22 cm, and the bullets also say 4 × 40 cm. Insaga B0FF23XVTC is titled 7.5 × 81 cm, the bullets say 3 inches and 32 inches, and the feedback cutting diameter is 24.89 mm. BeneLabel B0DXJVCLCY is titled 61 × 10 cm, and the feedback cutting diameter is 10 mm. K-Brands bullets say a 3/8 in hex, and the feedback shank says straight. Suewidfay B0D5XM2N59 bullets say hex, and the feedback shank says spline. Open the live photos. Three WORKPRO ASINs show 4.4 from 6,370. Two Suewidfay ASINs show 4.2 from 194. Those figures may be parent ratings. Adding 6,370 three times does not make 19,000 tests. “1 in Post Hole Diggers” is a sales rank, not a lab win. Ignore the 220% efficiency line on the LYFETC 10 × 40 cm listing. Bulb depth is on the bulb planting page. If the live page still shows two diameters, do not buy on the star line alone.

Common questions

What diameter do I need for bulbs versus a small shrub?
For one bulb, the narrow bits here are about 4 cm across, including the WORKPRO 4 cm pieces and the K-Brands 4 × 41 cm piece. A small shrub or hedge whip is the 8 to 10 cm flight, which lifts a much larger plug. A 10 cm bit is wide for a single tulip in a lawn. Measure the bulb, then the bit.
Is 30 cm long enough, or do I need 60 cm?
Thirty centimetres covers many bulbs and a shallow planting hole. It is short of a 600 mm post hole. A 60 or 81 cm title can go deeper in soil the bit will cut, and it is still a narrow bore. Buy the long single bit only when depth is the job and you do not also need a second diameter.
Will a 3/8 in hex fit my cordless drill?
It fits a 3/8 in or larger three-jaw chuck, which is what most of these listings specify. It does not fit an SDS-only tool. If the feedback table says straight or spline while the bullets say hex, trust the photo of the shank, not the friendlier line.
Do I need 18 V?
Eighteen volts is the figure sellers repeat, sometimes with 14 V written as a minimum on WORKPRO. It is not a pass mark we can cite as a standard. A small drill may plant a few bulbs in loose soil and then stall in clay. Do not read 18 V as permission to force rock.
Why do the title and the specification table disagree?
Some listings carry more than one size, and the feedback fields were not edited to match. Insaga’s width and BeneLabel’s 10 mm cutting diameter are the clearest cases. Do not split the difference. If you cannot tell which number is in the parcel, leave the listing.
What should I ignore in the star count?
Ignore a shared 6,370 on three WORKPRO ASINs, and a shared 194 on two Suewidfay ASINs, as if each colour had been reviewed alone. Ignore a best-seller rank as a test. A review of an 80 cm jointed bit under a 30 cm title may be a parent comment, not a result for the bit in the photo.
