BS 3388 shovels: what a current catalogue title covers

BS 3388 shovels sit under the 2004 forks, shovels and spades standard. None of these nine amazon.co.uk listings states a pass you can check on the page.
On this page

You are on an amazon.co.uk page for a square mouth shovel, looking for BS 3388 shovels in the title or the bullets before you pay. The text talks about a forged socket, a hardwood shaft, or a powder coat, and it does not print the standard number. The published title is Forks, shovels and spades: Requirements and test methods.
BSI Knowledge dates BS 3388:2004 to 26 May 2004 and still marks the record current. The public page is a catalogue entry for the forks shovels and spades standard, with descriptors that include hand tools, forks, and soil-working. We compared nine square mouth shovels on amazon.co.uk on 15 October 2026. None of those listings states a pass. A heavier forged head does not write the sentence the seller left out.
In short
BS 3388:2004 is the current British Standard, Forks, shovels and spades: Requirements and test methods. The open record is a catalogue entry, so you get the title and the date rather than the test clauses or a list of brands that passed. None of the nine listings in our comparison states a pass, and none is sold as insulated to BS 8020 or BS EN 60900.
What the title of BS 3388 covers
Descriptors on the current BSI record include hand tools, forks, and soil-working, so forks sit in the same standard as shovels and spades. The catalogue stops short of a blade width, a shaft length, or a load.
We did not buy BS 3388:2004, and this page does not quote its clauses or its test method. The catalogue carries no pass list of brands.
A square mouth shovel is the builders' scoop in that family: a straight front edge and raised sides, for lifting sand, gravel, spoil, and cement. Guides aimed at UK buyers treat that shape as a poor opener of undisturbed clay, where a spade or a taper-mouth shovel does the cutting. Lengths and shelf prices for these nine sit on the square mouth shovel comparison. Current means BSI still lists the 2004 document, not that every shovel on sale in Britain has been tested to it.
A standard is not a pass
A standard is a document for a class of tool. A pass is a result for one product, written on the page where you buy that product. BS 3388:2004 can be current on the BSI site while the shovel in your basket comes from a listing that never mentions it. We looked for the number, for the year 2004, and for any line that a test had been met. The nine amazon.co.uk files did not contain that line, so the display does not invent a mark.
Forging and weight are the wrong kind of evidence. The Bulldog 5SM2AM is forged all-steel at 2.55 kg and £21.00, origin India. The Draper 70373 is a forged No. 2 at 2.75 kg and £21.45. Neither states a BS 3388 result.
Stars leave the same gap. The Roughneck ROU68146 has 4.7 from 613 reviews at £22.59, with a stated length of 1,070 mm and foot treads. That count is a review-count criterion, not a BSI result or a laboratory score from us. The Draper 31391 has 4.5 from 627 reviews at £16.99, including people whose hardwood shafts snapped or whose rivets loosened.
A claim you could use would name BS 3388, the edition, and what was tested. We did not find that line. Mouth, length, and shaft are what the buying guide stays on. The best-for page can still prefer an all-steel shaft that will not rot, and that is still not a pass.
What these nine listings say about BS 3388
Shelf prices on these nine amazon.co.uk listings were taken on 15 October 2026. None of the titles, bullets, or attribute lines carries BS 3388. A warranty line, a powder coat, or the phrase heavy duty is not that claim.
Two of them are short, and a short shovel is still inside a title that says shovels. The Draper 15073 is a pressed mini with a wood shaft, listed at 70 × 15 × 6 cm and 700 g, at £11.61, with a one-year warranty stated. The title also says long handled. The Spear & Jackson MICROSQUARE states a blade of 210 × 160 mm, about 710 mm overall, and 1.15 kg, at £12.35, with a fibreglass shaft. Read the centimetres before you treat either as a site shovel.
The pressed full-size tools are just as quiet on the number. The Draper 31391 states a hardwood shaft, 940 mm overall, a pressed blade of 240 × 310 mm, and 2.3 kg, at £16.99. The Roughneck ROU68144 states 1,460 mm, a fibreglass shaft, foot treads, and 2.67 kg, at £19.34. The Roughneck ROU68146 states 1,070 mm, pressed steel, a fibreglass D-grip, and foot treads, at £22.59. An attribute on that Roughneck says 220 g, while reviews on the same page say over 2.2 kg, so the weight stays unknown.
The forged four sit near 2.5 kg, which is where the approval myth starts. Bulldog 5SM2AM is all steel, 2.55 kg, £21.00, origin India, so follow that field rather than a review that says England. Draper 70373 is 2.75 kg at £21.45, with lifetime in a bullet and 12 months parts and labour in the warranty field. Faithfull FAIASS2MYD states a 300 × 250 mm blade, 2.55 kg, £21.86, five years in the bullets, one year on spare parts, and two length lines, 0.7 m and 1,020 mm. Bulldog 5SM2T is FSC ash with a T-grip, 2.44 kg, £25.36. The folding attribute says yes on that ash Bulldog and on ROU68144, and neither description mentions a hinge, so neither is a folding shovel here.
Insulation is a different number
A search for a shovel British Standard often wants the blade safe beside a cable. BS 3388 does not answer that. The Health and Safety Executive's excavations page is about harm from underground services, and we use it only to keep that harm separate from this number. Near a cable, use an insulated tool. These nine are steel scoops, with wood, fibreglass, or steel shafts, and they are not sold as insulated.
BS 8020:2011 is for tools used near conductor rails. It is not a mark on these listings, and it is not BS EN 60900. None of the three numbers appears as a pass on the nine pages we read. A BS 8020 digging tool has to say so on its own listing. A square mouth from this set does not become one because the shaft is fibreglass or the head is painted.
Powder coat on the Draper 70373 and the Faithfull, and the green finish on the Bulldog 5SM2AM, are coatings you can scratch. These listings do not claim a rated insulating barrier. If the hole is beside a live cable, use a tool sold as insulated, or get a competent person to expose the service. When the ground is already clear, scooping is the job in how to use a square mouth shovel.
Product safety is not a test badge
In Great Britain the product-safety frame on the GOV.UK page we used is the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. Northern Ireland follows EU 2023/988 from 13 December 2024. That page does not impose a duty to stamp BS 3388 on a shovel. A duty about a safe consumer product can apply to a garden shovel with no British Standard number in the title.
The Consumer Rights Act 2015 sits on the sale, not on the BSI catalogue. It can matter if the shovel does not match the listing, or if a shaft fails at once. It is not a ruling on these ASINs, and it does not award a pass against BS 3388:2004. The Draper 15073 states one year. The Faithfull states five years in a bullet and one year on spare parts. The Draper 70373 states lifetime in a bullet and 12 months parts and labour in the field. Those lines stay the seller's words.
Products Compared read the nine amazon.co.uk listings, the BSI Knowledge catalogue entry, the GOV.UK page on the 2005 regulations, and the HSE excavations page. We did not buy the standard, and we did not test the shovels in a laboratory. If you need the number named, keep looking until a seller states it for that tool.
