Peter F.Editor

A square mouth shovel is the British builders' scoop: a straight front edge and raised sides. You lift sand, gravel, spoil and cement, and you leave a flatter face than a pointed blade. UK guides treat that shape as a poor opener of hard clay. A taper-mouth shovel or a spade does the cutting. Stars on a listing do not tell you the length. The Spear & Jackson MICROSQUARE is about 680–710 mm, and Draper 15073 is listed at 70 × 15 × 6 cm. "Long handled" in a title is not a measurement. Buyers of both short tools often expected a full-size shovel. Choose the mouth, then the length, then a forged socket or a pressed head, then steel, fibreglass or wood. The [square mouth shovel buying guide](/hub/digging-tools/square-mouth-shovel/sub/square-mouth-shovel-buying-guide) puts those checks in order. Wonkee Donkee and Pavingexpert treat the wide mouth as the tool for shifting loose material.

The best square mouth shovels in detail

Roughneck ROU68146 square shovel

Rank 1

Roughneck ROU68146 square shovel

∼£23

Our view

The Roughneck ROU68146 is a pressed square shovel stated at 1,070 mm, or 42 inches, with a fibreglass D-grip, foot treads, and item dimensions of 108 × 13 × 24 cm. The blade-length attribute says 32 inches. Across 613 amazon.co.uk ratings it sits at 4.7, from the first 50 review texts. Buyers praise the raised sides, the soft grip, and the boot ledges, and they report large amounts of gravel, stone, or soil moved without the head failing. Several describe a lighter feel than old wooden shovels, and one used it on heavy clay where cheaper shovels had bent or rusted. The attribute weight of 220 g does not match those reviews, which say over 2.2 kg or very heavy. The handle was a bit short for someone around 6 ft, and some buyers had only used it lightly, yet those 50 texts show no repeated break. At £22.59 this is the top pick, on that 4.7 from 613 ratings.

Pros

  • Stated length 1,070 mm, with foot treads and a soft fibreglass D-grip
  • Raised sides kept small stones on the blade
  • 4.7 from 613 ratings, and no repeated break in the first 50 texts
  • Moved gravel, stone, or soil, including heavy clay in one review
  • Lighter feel than old wooden shovels, in several reviews

Cons

  • Listed weight of 220 g, while reviews say over 2.2 kg or very heavy
  • Handle a bit short for someone around 6 ft
  • Some buyers had only used it lightly, so long-term wear is thin
  • Not described as a sharp cutting edge

Best for: Sand, gravel, cement, and trench fill, if you ignore the 220 g line and expect a shovel over 2.2 kg.

Less suitable: Someone around 6 ft who already finds 1,070 mm short, or a job that needs a sharp cutting edge.

Common questions

How long is the Roughneck ROU68146?

The title says 1,070 mm, or 42 inches. Item dimensions are 108 × 13 × 24 cm. The blade-length attribute says 32 inches. Foot treads and a fibreglass D-grip are in the bullets.

Does it weigh 220 g?

That is the attribute line. Reviews on the same page say the shovel is over 2.2 kg or very heavy. Do not print 220 g as the working weight.

What do buyers use it for?

The bullets name sand, gravel, cement, earth, and trenches. The star line is 4.7 from 613. The first 50 texts praise the sides and the grip. They do not show a repeated break.

Draper 70373 forged square shovel

Rank 2

Draper 70373 forged square shovel

∼£21

Our view

The Draper 70373 is a forged number 2 square shovel with an all-steel shaft, a powder coat, and a listed weight of 2.75 kg. Item dimensions are 97 × 32 × 14.5 cm. Across 90 amazon.co.uk ratings it sits at 4.7, from 17 review texts. Buyers call it heavy and solid, faster than a spade on topsoil, and one says the head is larger than a fibreglass Roughneck they already owned. Those texts name aggregate, concrete mixing, and clearing pebbles, and none describes a snap, a loose dowel, or rust. A tall reviewer with a bad back says the shaft is short, so they bend a lot, and one buyer later bought a lighter shovel. A bullet says a lifetime warranty and the warranty field says 12 months parts and labour. At £21.45 the 4.7 rests on 17 texts, which is too small a sample to call this the top pick.

Pros

  • Forged number 2 blade, powder-coated, on an all-steel shaft
  • Listed at 2.75 kg and called solid, with no snap in the 17 texts
  • Faster than a spade for topsoil, in the reviews
  • Smooth handle with no joins, and a larger head than one reviewer's fibreglass Roughneck

Cons

  • Heavy enough that one buyer later bought a lighter shovel
  • Shaft called short for a tall person with a bad back
  • Only 17 review texts sit under the 4.7 from 90 ratings
  • Lifetime warranty in a bullet, and 12 months parts and labour in the warranty field

Best for: Moving topsoil, aggregate, or a concrete mix when you want a forged steel shaft and can lift 2.75 kg.

Less suitable: A tall user with a bad back, or anyone who wants more than 17 review texts behind a 4.7.

Roughneck ROU68144 long square shovel

Rank 3

Roughneck ROU68144 long square shovel

∼£19

Our view

The Roughneck ROU68144 states a length of 1,460 mm, or 57½ inches, a fibreglass shaft, foot treads, and a weight of 2.67 kg. Item dimensions include 146 cm. Across 187 amazon.co.uk ratings it sits at 4.6, from 42 review texts, two of them not from the United Kingdom. Taller buyers say they stand straighter and can load a mixer or a skip, and the extra length has scooped a ditch or a stream without hands in the water. Reviews also cover gravel, road chippings, and mixed soil, with no repeated snap or bend in this file. That length is heavy: too much for a disabled buyer, tiring after an hour, and hard one-handed, and one review says it is not for short people. The grip is described as wide or thick, and the folding attribute has no hinge in the description or the reviews. The listing origin is China, and the price is £19.34.

Pros

  • Stated length 1,460 mm, so taller users stand straighter at a mixer or skip
  • Foot treads on a fibreglass shaft listed at 2.67 kg
  • Used on gravel, road chippings, and mixed soil, with no repeated snap in 42 texts
  • Extra length reached a ditch or a stream without hands in the water

Cons

  • 2.67 kg is too heavy for a disabled buyer and tiring after an hour
  • Not for short people, in one review
  • Grip described as wide or thick
  • Folding is only an attribute line; no hinge is described

Best for: A taller user loading a mixer, a skip, or a ditch who wants the 1,460 mm shaft.

Less suitable: A shorter or disabled user, or anyone who needs a light shovel for more than an hour of one-handed work.

Draper 31391 hardwood square shovel

Rank 4

Draper 31391 hardwood square shovel

∼£17

Our view

The Draper 31391 is a pressed builders' square shovel with a stated length of 940 mm, a blade of 240 × 310 mm, and a listed weight of 2.3 kg. Across 627 amazon.co.uk ratings it sits at 4.5, from the first 50 review texts. Buyers scoop sand, aggregate, and cement, including when water is added, and several say they moved tonnes of stone, gravel, soil, or type 1. A buyer of 5 ft 2 in found it comfortable, and lighter than another shovel in the same house. Some buyers over 6 ft still wanted a longer shaft, including for snow. Shafts have snapped while moving sand and near the bottom after two uses clearing garden waste, and rivets have loosened where the head meets the wood. At £16.99 it is the best value full-size shovel here, with a hardwood Y-dee and an India origin on the listing, though reviewers also call the pressed blade thin.

Pros

  • Stated 940 mm overall and a pressed blade of 240 × 310 mm
  • Scoops sand, aggregate, and cement, including when water is added
  • 4.5 from 627 ratings, and several buyers moved tonnes of stone or soil
  • Comfortable for a buyer of 5 ft 2 in
  • Hardwood shaft and wooden Y-dee at £16.99

Cons

  • Shaft snapped while moving sand, and after two uses clearing garden waste
  • Loose rivets and a slack Y-dee where the wood meets the head
  • Too short for some buyers over 6 ft, including as a snow shovel
  • Blade called thin, flimsy, or too light for heavy duty

Best for: Shifting sand, aggregate, and spoil on a 940 mm hardwood shovel when £16.99 is the budget.

Less suitable: A buyer over 6 ft who needs a longer shaft, or repeated heavy loads if a snapped shaft is the failure you want to avoid.

Bulldog 5SM2AM all-steel square shovel

Rank 5

Bulldog 5SM2AM all-steel square shovel

∼£21

Our view

The Bulldog 5SM2AM is a forged all-steel square shovel listed at 2.55 kg, with item dimensions of 10 × 26.5 × 102.6 cm. Across 112 amazon.co.uk ratings it sits at 4.5, and all 31 review texts in the file are marked United Kingdom. Buyers call the steel shaft nearly unbreakable and say it is still going after years, including work with metal swarf. One review uses it as a number 2 building shovel for mixers and for material that is not overly compacted. The country-of-origin field says India, while one review says England, so the listing field is the one to follow. The wooden cross piece is too small to grip, and one came loose after a day. A separate buyer says the shovel was not sent and the refund was hard to sort. At £21.00 the steel shaft is the reason to buy it, and the small grip is the reason to hesitate.

Pros

  • Forged blade and socket on an all-steel shaft listed at 2.55 kg
  • Called nearly unbreakable, including years of work with metal swarf
  • Used as a number 2 shovel for mixers and material that is not compacted
  • 4.5 from 112 ratings, with all 31 texts marked United Kingdom

Cons

  • Wooden cross piece too small to grip
  • That cross piece came loose after one day
  • One order was not sent, and the refund was hard to sort
  • Origin field says India, against a review that says England

Best for: Filling a mixer and shifting material that is not overly compacted, if a steel shaft matters more than the grip.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs a large wooden grip, or who would treat one review's England claim as the country of origin.

Common questions

Where does the listing say this Bulldog is made?

The country-of-origin field says India. One review says it is made in England. Use the origin field, not that review.

How heavy is it, and how long?

Listed weight is 2.55 kg. Item dimensions are 10 × 26.5 × 102.6 cm. The bullets do not give a separate blade size or overall length.

What do reviewers complain about?

The star line is 4.5 from 112. Praise is for a sturdy steel shaft. Complaints are a small wooden cross piece, that piece coming loose, and one order that did not arrive.

Spear & Jackson MICROSQUARE micro shovel

Rank 6

Spear & Jackson MICROSQUARE micro shovel

∼£12

Our view

The Spear & Jackson MICROSQUARE lists a carbon-steel blade of 210 × 160 mm, an overall length of 710 mm in the bullets, and a weight of 1.15 kg. Item dimensions are 68 × 16.5 × 5 cm. Across 413 amazon.co.uk ratings it sits at 4.4, from the first 50 review texts, two of them not from the United Kingdom. Buyers who checked the size use it for a coal bunker, a car boot, a drain, or cement in a barrow, and one says the powder coat was still intact after stones and gravel. Others expected a full-size shovel and called it useless in the garden. One blade bent and was binned, one shovel rusted after a few days, and one buyer found timber in a shaft the listing calls fibreglass. At £12.35 it is a short tool for a ditch, not a builders' shovel.

Pros

  • Blade stated at 210 × 160 mm with a polyester powder coat
  • 1.15 kg, used for a coal bunker, a car boot, or a tight ditch
  • Soft ergonomic hilt on a shaft the bullets call fibreglass
  • Powder coat still intact after stones and gravel, in one review

Cons

  • Many buyers expected a full-size shovel and called it useless in the garden
  • One blade bent and was thrown away
  • Rust after a few days, in one review
  • One buyer reports timber inside the shaft

Best for: A drain, a coal bunker, or a barrow, once you have read the 710 mm length and the 210 × 160 mm blade.

Less suitable: A tall buyer who wants a full garden shovel, or digging where a blade has already bent in the reviews.

Bulldog 5SM2T ash square shovel

Rank 7

Bulldog 5SM2T ash square shovel

∼£25

Our view

The Bulldog 5SM2T is a forged number 2 square shovel with an FSC ash shaft, a T-grip, and a listed weight of 2.44 kg. Item dimensions are 94 × 24 × 18 cm, and the bullets give neither a separate overall length nor a blade size in millimetres. Across 34 amazon.co.uk ratings it sits at 4.3, from eight review texts. Buyers who know Bulldog from site work call it well made, and one says it was strong enough for building or rough work. The attribute line says it folds, but neither the description nor the reviews mention a hinge. In one of those eight texts the top of the handle fell off on the second use, and the buyer glued it rather than send it back. At £25.36 there is no warranty field, and eight texts are too few to show whether that handle fault repeats.

Pros

  • Forged solid socket and an FSC ash shaft listed at 2.44 kg
  • T-grip, with the bullets naming sand, snow, and similar loose material
  • Familiar to buyers who have used Bulldog on site
  • Did the job it was bought for, in the short set of texts

Cons

  • Top of the handle fell off on the second use
  • The buyer glued it back rather than return it
  • Only eight review texts under a 4.3 from 34 ratings
  • Folding is an attribute only, and no hinge is described

Best for: Shovelling sand or snow with a forged number 2 head and an ash T-grip, provided the handle top stays on.

Less suitable: A buyer who needs a hinge, a long run of reviews, or a shovel whose handle has not already come off in use.

Draper 15073 mini square shovel

Rank 8

Draper 15073 mini square shovel

∼£12

Our view

The Draper 15073 is a pressed mini square shovel listed at 70 × 15 × 6 cm and 700 g, with a wood shaft and a plastic Y-dee. Across 429 amazon.co.uk ratings it sits at 4.2, drawn from 49 review texts, three of them not from the United Kingdom. Buyers who expected a mini use it for jumbo bags, a barrow, a balcony, a car, or a child, and one review puts the length at about 600 mm. The title also says long handled, and a buyer over 6 ft calls it about knee height. Wood has split, screws have arrived rusty, and one blade snapped after two days around roots. The coating chipped after one use in soft sand. At £11.61, with a one-year warranty and a China origin on the listing, it is a light tool for a tight space, and the wrong length for turning a bed.

Pros

  • Pressed mini blade listed at 700 g for bags, a barrow, or a car boot
  • Listed size 70 × 15 × 6 cm, which short adults and children in the reviews can use
  • One-year warranty, with the origin field set to China
  • Light enough for buyers who find a full-size shovel hard

Cons

  • Title says long handled, but a buyer over 6 ft calls it about knee height
  • Split shaft wood, rusty screws, or soil on arrival
  • One blade snapped after two days around roots
  • Coating chipped after one use in soft sand

Best for: A barrow, a balcony, or a car boot, when you already know this is a 700 g mini rather than a long shovel.

Less suitable: Turning beds or working roots if you are over 6 ft and read the long-handled title as a full-length shaft.

Common questions

The listing dimensions are 70 × 15 × 6 cm and the weight is 700 g. The title also says long handled. Reviews from taller buyers say it is far shorter than a full-size shovel.

What is the blade and handle made of?

The bullets say a pressed mild steel blade, a wood shaft, and a plastic Y-dee. The attribute line says carbon steel for the blade.

What failed in the reviews?

Buyers report split wood, rust, a blade that snapped after two days around roots, and a coating that chipped in soft sand. Others use it for bags, a barrow, or a child.

Faithfull FAIASS2MYD square shovel

Rank 9

Faithfull FAIASS2MYD square shovel

∼£22

Our view

The Faithfull FAIASS2MYD is a forged number 2 square shovel with a stated blade of 300 × 250 mm and a listed weight of 2.55 kg. A bullet gives the shaft as 0.7 m, while the item dimensions are 30 × 250 × 1,020 mm, so those length lines stay separate. Across 38 amazon.co.uk ratings it sits at 4.2, from 15 review texts. Buyers call it solid and standard-size, and one says it stood up to a couple of tonnes of gravel or sand with the paint still holding. It also moved snow and ice where a plastic snow shovel did not. The file is small, and one review reports a sharp weld on the rear that cut a hand. Another says the shovel arrived brown, not the red shown in the advert. The bullets state a five-year guarantee, the spare-part line says one year, and the price is £21.86.

Pros

  • Forged socket and powder coat, with the blade stated at 300 × 250 mm
  • 2.55 kg, and one review shifted a couple of tonnes of gravel or sand
  • Moved snow and ice where a plastic snow shovel did not
  • Five-year guarantee stated in the bullets

Cons

  • Shaft given as 0.7 m in a bullet and 1,020 mm in the item dimensions
  • A sharp weld on the rear cut a hand
  • Arrived brown rather than the red in the advert, in one review
  • 4.2 from 38 ratings, with only 15 texts

Best for: Site or home shifting of gravel, sand, or snow, if you check the rear weld before the first use.

Less suitable: A buyer who needs one agreed shaft length, or who expects the red colour shown in the advert.

Common questions

How long is the Faithfull shaft?

A bullet says shaft 0.7 m and blade 300 × 250 mm. Item dimensions are 30 × 250 × 1,020 mm. Listed weight is 2.55 kg. Do not collapse the two length lines into one.

Is the handle wood?

The bullets describe a tubular shaft welded to the socket and an MYD hilt with a wooden cross dowel. The handle-material attribute says wood.

What do the reviews warn about?

The star line is 4.2 from 38, with 15 texts in the file. One review reports a sharp weld that cut a hand. Another says the shovel arrived brown, not the red in the advert.

How we compared

Scores on this page are the amazon.co.uk star rating scaled to 100: stars divided by five, then multiplied by 100, as saved on 15 October 2026. That is a listing score for these nine shovels, not a laboratory test. Review volume sits beside the score and does not change it. Price is used only for the best-value award. A snapped shaft, a bent blade, a loose handle, the 220 g weight line, a folding attribute with no hinge, and clashing warranty or length lines did not change the star score. They decided the tie at 94, and they are why the best value is not the top pick.

Square mouth shovel buying guide

A square mouth shovel is worth buying when the mouth matches the material and the stated length matches your height. Check the blade and the shaft next. Price and the review count come last. Prices below are amazon.co.uk shelf prices on 15 October 2026.

What is a square mouth shovel?

A square mouth shovel has a straight front edge and raised sides. It is the British builders' scoop for sand, gravel, spoil and cement, and it leaves a flatter face than a pointed blade. Wonkee Donkee and Pavingexpert treat the wide mouth as the tool for shifting loose material. The same guides treat it as a poor opener of hard clay. A taper-mouth shovel or a spade does that cutting. Length is the next check, and a title is not a measurement. Full-size tools in this set are about 940–1,080 mm.

Best for

  • Shifting sand, gravel, spoil or cement on a full-size square mouth
  • A short shovel for a car, a coal bunker, a barrow or a balcony, once you have read the length

Not ideal for

  • Opening undisturbed clay or roots
  • Digging beside a cable if you need an insulated tool

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    A square blade on clay

UK guides treat a square mouth as the tool for loose material. Undisturbed clay and roots need a taper-mouth shovel or a spade. Buying the highest star line does not change the edge.

  2. 2

Reading the title instead of the length

“Long handled” is not a measurement. Draper 15073 is listed at 70 × 15 × 6 cm. The MICROSQUARE is about 680–710 mm. Buyers of both often expected a full-size shovel. Full-size shafts in this set are about 940–1,080 mm, and Roughneck ROU68144 states 1,460 mm.

  3. 3

Printing 220 g, or treating steel as insulated

The Roughneck ROU68146 attribute says 220 g. Reviews on the same page say over 2.2 kg or very heavy, so the working weight is unknown. These nine are not sold as insulated. Near a cable, HSG47 calls for an insulated tool, and BS 8020:2011 is not a mark on this set.

What to weigh up

Mouth, length and size

High

The mouth decides the job. A square front edge lifts sand, gravel, spoil and cement and leaves a flatter face. It is the wrong blade for undisturbed clay or roots. Choosing a shovel, a spade or a fork is a separate question, set out in [shovel, spade or fork](/hub/digging-tools/blog/shovel-spade-or-fork). Length comes next. Full-size shafts here are about 940–1,080 mm. Roughneck ROU68144 states 1,460 mm. The two short tools are about 680–710 mm and 70 cm.

Blade, shaft and review count

High

Forged sockets in this set are the two Bulldogs, Draper 70373 and Faithfull. Pressed heads include Roughneck ROU68146, Draper 31391 and the Draper mini. Reviews on the hardwood Draper include both tonnes of stone and snapped shafts or loose rivets. All-steel is about 2.5–2.8 kg before the load, where that weight is one you can trust. The long Roughneck is listed at 2.67 kg. The 220 g line on ROU68146 is not a working weight. Both Roughnecks advertise foot treads.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Bulk bags and small mixes

You move sand, aggregate or a small mix, and you store the head indoors. The Draper 31391 is the best value full-size shovel here, about £16.99, stated at 940 mm and 2.3 kg. Reviews include tonnes of stone moved, and also snapped shafts and loose rivets. If you are over 6 ft, check that 940 mm is long enough.

Taller users who stoop

You stoop on a shaft of about a metre, and you can lift about 2.7 kg plus the load. Roughneck ROU68144 states 1,460 mm and 2.67 kg, about £19.34. Taller reviewers stand straighter at a mixer or a skip. Shorter reviewers, and one disabled buyer, found that length too heavy.

Car, bunker or balcony

You want a short shovel for a car, a coal bunker, a ditch or a child, and you read the size first. The MICROSQUARE lists a 210 × 160 mm blade and about 710 mm overall, at 1.15 kg and about £12.35. Many buyers expected a full-size shovel. The Draper mini is listed at 700 g, and a buyer over 6 ft called it about knee height.

Common questions about square mouth shovels

What is a square mouth shovel used for?
A square mouth shovel has a straight front edge and raised sides. You use it to lift sand, gravel, spoil and cement, and to leave a flatter face than a pointed blade. UK tool guides treat it as the wrong blade for undisturbed clay or roots. A taper-mouth shovel or a spade does that cutting. On this page the nine amazon.co.uk listings, captured on 15 October 2026, run from a 700 g mini near £12 to full-size tools up to about £25.36. Stars do not tell you the length.
Which square mouth shovel is the top pick?
The top pick is the Roughneck ROU68146, about £22.59. It ties the highest listing score, 94, with the Draper 70373, both at 4.7 stars. The award goes to the Roughneck because amazon.co.uk shows 613 ratings, and the first 50 review texts do not show a repeated break. It states 1,070 mm, a fibreglass D-grip and foot treads. Ignore the 220 g attribute. Reviews say over 2.2 kg. It is for sand, gravel, cement and trench fill, and the handle was a bit short for someone around 6 ft.
Which square mouth shovel is the best value?
The best value is the Draper 31391, about £16.99. It is the lowest-priced full-size square shovel in this set, with a stated length of 940 mm, a pressed blade of 240 × 310 mm and a hardwood shaft. amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 627 ratings. Buyers report sand, aggregate and cement moved, and also snapped shafts and loose rivets. That is why it is best value and not the top pick. The mini at £11.61 and the MICROSQUARE at £12.35 cost less, and buyers often found them the wrong length.
How long should a square mouth shovel be?
Read the stated length, not the words "long handled". Full-size shovels in this set are about 940–1,080 mm. Roughneck ROU68144 states 1,460 mm, which taller reviewers say lets them stand straighter, and which shorter reviewers and one disabled buyer found too heavy at 2.67 kg. Spear & Jackson MICROSQUARE is about 680–710 mm with a 210 × 160 mm blade. Draper 15073 is listed at 70 × 15 × 6 cm and 700 g. If you are over 6 ft, several full-size shafts in the reviews were still short.
Does the Roughneck ROU68146 weigh 220 g?
No. The attribute line says 220 g. Reviews on the same amazon.co.uk page say the shovel is over 2.2 kg or very heavy. Treat the working weight as unknown. The title length, 1,070 mm or 42 inches, is a separate figure, and the blade-length attribute says 32 inches. Foot treads and a fibreglass D-grip are in the bullets. Do not use 220 g when you compare it with the Draper 31391 at 2.3 kg or the long Roughneck at 2.67 kg.
Do any of these square mouth shovels fold?
No. Roughneck ROU68144 and Bulldog 5SM2T have a folding attribute set to yes. Neither description mentions a hinge, and the reviews do not describe one. Treat both as fixed shovels. The long Roughneck is a 1,460 mm fibreglass shaft at 2.67 kg. The Bulldog 5SM2T is a forged number 2 head on an FSC ash shaft with a T-grip, listed at 2.44 kg. In one of eight review texts the top of that handle fell off on the second use.
When should I stop and call a professional?
Stop when the dig is in the road, the trench can collapse, or a locator shows a service you are not trained to expose. HSG47 says get plans, locate services, dig beside a service and ease the blade in. Do not throw the shovel. Near a cable, use an insulated tool. These nine are not sold as insulated. LSBUD is the free householder search, and not every asset owner is a member. For a planting hole, see the trowel comparison.

Our verdict

For sand, gravel, cement and trench fill, the top pick is the Roughneck ROU68146, about £22.59. It shares the highest listing score, 94, with the Draper 70373, both at 4.7. The award goes to the Roughneck because amazon.co.uk shows 613 ratings, and the first 50 review texts do not show a repeated break. It states 1,070 mm, with foot treads and a fibreglass D-grip. Ignore the 220 g line. If about £16.99 matters more, the Draper 31391 is the best value: the lowest-priced full-size shovel in this set, 940 mm, 4.5 from 627 ratings. Shafts on that listing have snapped, and rivets have loosened, which is why it is not the top pick.
