Stop shovel rusting: coating is not outdoor storage

Powder coat on a square shovel is a finish claim, not a reason to leave the head in the rain. See which listings state a coating and what reviewers saw.
On this page

You left the square head against the fence after the job because the listing said powder coat, and a wet week did the rest. The mouth went brown at the edge. You looked up how to stop shovel rusting, and the useful answer is smaller than a tin of oil. The coating line was a finish on the page. It was not permission to leave that head in the rain.
Products Compared read the amazon.co.uk listings in this square mouth shovel set, and the review lines those pages captured. Shelf prices are the GBP figures on those listings as compared on 15 October 2026. There is no laboratory rust test behind this page. In short
Powder coat is stated on the Spear & Jackson MICROSQUARE, the Draper 70373, and the Faithfull FAIASS2MYD, and it is not a reason to leave the head in the rain. The Roughneck ROU68144 is tumble lacquered, a different claim, and the Draper mini is pressed mild steel that reviewers still saw rust on. No listing here prints an oiling interval, and a warranty line is not a rust promise.
Coating claims on these listings
Three blades in this set state a powder coat. They do not say the head can spend the week outdoors.
The Spear & Jackson MICROSQUARE, ASIN B00AHXYEMK, is carbon steel with a powder coat. The bullets give a blade of 210 × 160 mm and a listed weight of 1.15 kg, and the shelf price is £12.35. The star line is 4.4 from 413 reviews. It does not tell you to abandon the head in the garden between jobs.
The Draper 70373, ASIN B09JCRBXKV, is a forged No. 2 with a powder coat, an all-steel shaft, and a metal YD grip with a wooden dowel. Listed weight is 2.75 kg. The shelf price is £21.45, and the star line is 4.7 from 90 reviews. Forged and powder coated is a different listing from the pressed mini that shares the Draper name.
The Faithfull FAIASS2MYD, ASIN B0001GS0AU, states a forged socket and a powder coat. The blade is given as 300 × 250 mm, the listed weight is 2.55 kg, and the shelf price is £21.86. The star line is 4.2 from 38 reviews.
The Roughneck ROU68144, ASIN B08QVVW5CD, is the long square shovel at a stated 1,460 mm and 2.67 kg, priced at £19.34, with foot treads and a fibreglass shaft. The finish recorded for that head is tumble lacquer, not the powder-coat phrase used on the three above. Lacquer is still a coating word. It is not a second kind of powder coat.
The Draper 15073 mini, ASIN B07355CHSV, is the mild-steel case, not a powder-coat case. The bullets say a pressed mild steel blade, a wood shaft, and a plastic Y-dee, at 70 × 15 × 6 cm, 700 g, and £11.61. An attribute line on the same page says carbon steel for the blade. The page does not call that blade powder coated.
Several other full-size heads in the square mouth shovel comparison do not state powder coat at all. The buying guide still starts with mouth, size, shaft, and length. A finish word does not move those four.
What reviewers actually saw
A handful of comments is not a percentage, and this comparison did not run a corrosion trial to turn them into one.
On the MICROSQUARE the capture includes rust after a few days, in one review. It is not a rate you can multiply across every powder-coated shovel in the set. Other buyers on the same page use the tool for a coal bunker, a car, or a ditch. They are not evidence that a week of rain is harmless.
On the Draper 15073 the notes belong to the mini. One review says the head rusted and broke after months. Another says it arrived with rusty screws. The comparison's note also records a coating that chipped in soft sand, and a blade that snapped after two days around roots. If your Draper shovel rusted, check the model number before you decide the forged 70373 did the same thing.
One review on the forged Draper 70373 mentions rust protection in use. That is a buyer's phrase about the shovel they had, on the jobs they did. It is not a lab result, and it does not cancel the MICROSQUARE comment. A 4.7 from 90 reviews does not tell you the blue coat survived a winter against a fence, because that test is not in the file.
The Faithfull reviews in this capture do not give you a rust timetable. One review says the shovel arrived brown, not the red in the advert. Brown on arrival is not, on that sentence alone, a measured corrosion test.
Rain is still rain
The bullet says powder coat, you hear corrosion protection, and the head spends a British week against a fence. A shovel left outside is the situation this page is for, whether the coat was blue, the lacquer was on the long Roughneck, or the mini never claimed a powder coat at all.
None of these listings states a manufacturer interval for indoor storage. None names an oil, a grease, or a number of dry days that resets the finish. Store a shovel indoors, or at least under a roof, once the scooping is finished. A shed keeps water off the steel. That is shelter. It is not a service schedule.
The head is a working edge, which is how Wonkee Donkee Tools frames a shovel blade. Grit, sand, and a chop into a packed crust meet the steel at the lip, which is where a thin finish goes first. Pavingexpert does not hand you an aftercare clock. The 70373 page still does not say the blue coat is outdoor storage.
How you scoop is on the how to use a square mouth shovel page. It is a method for loose material, not a rust trial. The best square mouth shovels page says who each pick is for before you buy.
Warranty lines are not a care guide
Read the Draper 70373 twice, and do not merge the lines. A bullet says lifetime warranty. The warranty field says 12 months parts and labour. Neither line names rust or rain. It is not a promise that a head left against the fence will be exchanged because the coat dulled.
The Faithfull bullets include a five-year guarantee. A spare-part line says one year. Five years is not an instruction to store the 300 × 250 mm head outside. The Draper 15073 states a one-year warranty at £11.61 and does not name rust inside it. These pages do not say a one-year warranty covers rust.
The MICROSQUARE warranty is not stated. The Roughneck ROU68144 warranty is not stated. A blank field is not a hidden lifetime promise, and the star lines, 4.4 from 413 and 4.6 from 187, do not score a storage test.
The GOV.UK guide to the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 is the Great Britain frame for a product placed on the market. It is not a shovel storage method. In Northern Ireland the product-safety frame is EU 2023/988 from 13 December 2024. Neither awards a claim for a coated head left in the rain.
What this article will not prescribe
This page will not name an oil, a grease, a spray, or a weekly routine, and it will not say powder coat stops a shovel rusting. The MICROSQUARE review that reports rust after a few days is enough to block that sentence. It will not treat tumble lacquer on the Roughneck ROU68144 as powder coat, or the 700 g Draper 15073 as the forged 2.75 kg Draper 70373.
It will not prescribe a chemical for a head that is already flaking, and it will not tell you to grind the mouth back to bright metal. If the shaft is wood, as on the mini, rot from being left out is a separate problem from the steel, and this article stops at the head. Keep whichever head you use out of the rain.
