Sandblaster for rust

Updated: 21.10.2026

A rusty bracket and a rusty wing are not the same job, and a portable gun does not become a bodyshop because the title says rust. A sandblaster for rust, in this set, is a compressor-fed gun for loose rust on parts you can unbolt and hold. It is a poor tool for thin car skin, and the wrong machine for inlet valves. The ten listings are on the [portable sandblaster comparison](/hub/compressors/portable-sandblaster). Panel and primer points below are from Chiltern Blast Cleaning and Kue Group, who are not testing these guns. This is not a lab test.

Rust on parts you can take off

UK reviews of the InoKraft kits describe the scale these guns finish: tools, local rust, soda on a small component, a radiator. That is a bracket or a hinge on the bench, not a door skin. The BGS 70056 includes 2 kg of brown aluminium oxide at 0.21–0.35 mm. Next to a pot that reviewers say can empty in seconds when pointed down, 2 kg is a short trial, not a strip of a wing. Estink reviews include a motorbike frame cleaned on a 100 litre compressor, with pauses to rebuild pressure. LIYOU's large review file is mostly about grit that will not leave the hopper. Do not promote a finished small part to a shell. Which kit those small spots point at is on the best portable sandblaster page. If you have not bought yet, the portable sandblaster buying guide is the order: air, then feed, then media.

Oxide, bead, or soda

Sandblasters.co.uk, writing about cabinet media, points aluminium oxide at steel you will paint, because it leaves a key, and glass bead at aluminium and softer metal. That is a supplier's job split, not a test of a £50 gun. Oxide cuts and it profiles the surface. It is the wrong bag for a gentle clean on alloy trim. Bead is the softer option they name. Do not try sand first. At work, COSHH 2002 Schedule 2 prohibits sand and other free-silica abrasives for blasting articles. A householder is not automatically that dutyholder. The dust is still silica dust, and HSE sheet CN7 treats silica-free as under 1 percent silica. The aluminium oxide in the BGS box is a named abrasive with a grain size. Damp oxide clumps, and a clump is how a 5 mm nozzle stops. Old paint may contain lead. If you cannot say it does not, do not blast it in a garage and sweep the floor. Hand that part on.

Thin panels are a different job

Chiltern Blast Cleaning, who strip bodyshells for a living, leave the middle of flat panels because doors and bonnets distort. That is a booth practice. It is the reason a handheld gun at 60–120 PSI is not a safe setting you can invent for a wing. No listing here states a pressure that is kind to thin steel, and this page will not invent one. A restorer with a wing still on the car, or a bonnet with a bubble in the middle, should stop. A portable gun can nibble a thick bracket or a part on the bench. It should not chase lacquer across a skin you still want straight. If the panel fits in a box and you want the grit contained, that is a sandblasting cabinet, not a longer session with an open hopper. The AUTOOL HTS558 is not the answer for panel rust either. It is a walnut blaster for inlet ports, at £339.99, with the air pump extra and the valve shut before you start. The 4.4-star line is not evidence that walnut is a rust method for a wing.

Prime before the surface blooms

Bare steel after a blast starts to rust again as soon as the air is damp. Kue Group treats about four hours from grit blast to paint as their usual window, and they say humidity and salts shorten it. Flash rust, in their account, means you blast again rather than paint over the bloom. That is their practice. It is not a guarantee that your garage will give you four hours. In a damp UK garage, treat the window as shorter. Have the primer open before the last pass. A radiator or a bracket you can move indoors is a fair piece inside that rush. A wing left outside while you find a coupling is how flash rust becomes the next job. If you cannot prime the same day, do not blast that day.

Common questions

Will this take rust off a bracket?
Often, if the bracket is thick enough to unbolt and the media is dry. InoKraft reviews describe tools and local rust, with a 900 cc hopper lasting a few minutes. It will not turn a gun that will not feed, such as the pattern in LIYOU reviews, into a rust method.
Will it take rust off a wing?
Do not plan on it. Chiltern Blast Cleaning leave the middle of flat panels because doors and bonnets distort. No listing here states a pressure that is safe for thin skin. A wing still on the car is a specialist job.
Oxide, bead, or soda?
Sandblasters.co.uk point aluminium oxide at steel you will paint, because it leaves a key, and glass bead at softer metal. Soda does not etch, and InoKraft soda comments are light deposits, not scale. Do not start with building sand.
How fast do I have to prime?
Kue Group treat about four hours from grit blast to paint as their usual window, shorter in damp air, and flash rust means blasting again. That is their practice, not a promise for your garage. If you cannot prime the same day, do not blast that day.
Is the walnut machine for rust?
No. The AUTOOL HTS558 cleans inlet carbon with walnut shell, with the valve shut and the air pump supplied by you. It is £339.99. The 4.4-star line is not a rust score for a bracket or a panel.
