Recoil or straight air hose

Updated: 21.10.2026

The coil on the peg looks tidier than the hose that lives in a knot beside the compressor, until you stretch it toward the car and it pulls the inflator back, or until a spray gun twitches at the end of a pass. Choosing a recoil or straight air hose is that trade, not a contest between brands. A recoil hose springs back and stores itself. A straight hose lies where you put it and does not tug. A wall reel is a third product, with a drum and a lead-in, and it is not what these listings are. The [air hose comparison](/hub/compressors/air-hose) is the eleven hoses. What springs back, and what a reel does instead

A polyurethane recoil hose in this set is a coil with a stated working length on the title and a memory that shortens it when you let go. YOTOO sells that shape at 10 m and at 15 m, both 6 mm and 150 PSI, with Euro ends the listing says you can remove. Darnassus is a 15 m coil at 120 PSI working, with the fitting text in conflict. TIANLIN is a 9 m coil at 4 mm and 10 bar. The straight hoses are the LIKEEM hybrids, the grey YOTOO hybrid, the BGS PVC fabric line, and the Bluespot rubber hose. Metro Sales' comparison of coiled hoses and ordinary air hoses says a coil is not a retractable reel, and that a coil resists when you stretch it. Rowse makes the same point: a straight hose has no spring, and it can kink, while a recoil hose needs effort to pull out, especially if it is long. That spring is also a pull on the gun. If you wanted the hose to stay out at a set length and rewind on its own into a case, you are describing a reel, and this category does not sell one.

Printed length and the length you can walk

The metres on a coil are the catalogue length, and reviews treat them as optimistic. On the YOTOO 10 m coil, ASIN B08NWQHGD6 at £19.99, several of the 907 reviews say the stretched length is shorter than 10 m even though the hose is useful around a garage. On the 15 m coil, B0B78GXLNQ at £26.99, several reviewers say it stretches toward the title, one says the useful length was nearer 10 m, and a bullet on the same page still says 10 metre self-coiling. The Hosemaster's recoil collection says a comfortable working length is about 80 per cent of the stated extended length. That is their rule of thumb for the hoses they sell. It is not a measurement of these ASINs, and it should not be applied as this 10 m coil is 8 m. Use it only as a warning that the title is the extended figure, not the distance you can hold without fighting the spring. A straight 10 m hose, such as the BGS 3250 or the Bluespot 07952, is 10 m of tube if the listing is honest about length. It will also lie in a heap unless you coil it yourself.

When the coil is the right shape

Buy the coil when the tool is light, the job is close to the compressor, and a hose on the floor is the problem you are solving. A brad nailer, a blow gun, and a tyre inflator used beside the car are the jobs reviewers actually name on the YOTOO 10 m coil, which shows 4.6 from 907 reviews and a two-year warranty. The Euro ends come off with a spanner, so a wrong nose is a fitting change rather than a new hose, provided you depressurise first. The working pressure on those YOTOO coils is 150 PSI, and the maximum field matches it. TIANLIN at £9.99 is also a coil, with 4.3 from 222 reviews, and it is not the same product in a smaller box. The bore is 4 mm, the maximum is 10 bar, and one review says the fittings were missing. A 4 mm coil will not feed a tool that is already marginal on 6 mm. Darnassus at £30.59 states 15 m and 6 mm, then names NPT and brass wording together and copies a 360 PSI burst into the maximum field, with three ratings and no review text.

When the hose should lie flat

A straight hose is the better shape when the tool must stay where you put it. SGS Engineering notes that spray painters often prefer a standard hose because a coil resists. The LIKEEM red hybrids are the straight 9.5 mm option, 5 m at £15.99 and 10 m at £19.99, on fixed 1/4 inch BSP ends, with the review limit that the texts are shared. The grey YOTOO hybrid is 15 m straight at 6.5 mm and £26.99, and it stays in the lies-flat group even though reviews also describe a leaking coupler and a split at 140 PSI. Bluespot is 10 m of rubber on BSP fittings at £14.95, with the bore unstated. BGS is 10 m of PVC fabric at £15.13, with burst reviews at about 6 to 7 bar. None of those straight hoses rewinds itself. You trade the tidy coil for a line that will not tug a gun across a panel. The air hose for a spray gun page is where bore and that tug are taken together. The air hose buying guide is the coupling and pressure order.

Which shape, on one condition

If the tool is a nailer or an inflator and the floor must stay clear, choose the 6 mm YOTOO coil and expect less than the printed reach. If you are spraying, or the coil's pull gets in the way, choose a straight hose and then check the bore.

Common questions

Will a recoil hose reach the metres on the title?
Often not, once you are holding it at a comfortable stretch. YOTOO 10 m reviewers say the useful length is shorter than 10 m. One review of the 15 m coil says nearer 10 m, and that listing still has a 10 m bullet. The Hosemaster's 80 per cent figure is their rule of thumb, not a measured length for these ASINs.
Does the coil pull the tool back?
Yes. That is the spring that stores the hose. Rowse and Metro Sales both describe the resistance. On a nailer you may not mind. On a spray gun the same pull can move the gun at the end of a pass. A straight hose does not do that, and it also does not put itself away.
Is a recoil hose the same as a wall reel?
No. A recoil hose is the coil itself. A reel is a drum, usually with a separate lead-in from the compressor, and it is a different category. Metro Sales says the coil is not a retractable reel. Buying a longer coil does not give you a wall-mounted rewind.
Which tools suit a 6 mm coil in this set?
Reviewers of the YOTOO 10 m coil name nail guns, tyre inflation, and light blowing, with some HVLP use. The working pressure stated is 150 PSI. A tool that needs more air than a 6 mm line will carry, or a fitting that is not Euro, is outside that recommendation. The 4 mm TIANLIN coil is a step down again.
Is a 4 mm coil just a shorter version of a 6 mm coil?
No. TIANLIN is 9 m and 4 mm, with a 10 bar maximum. YOTOO's coils are 6 mm and 150 PSI. The smaller bore restricts the tool more than the missing metre or two. A loose or missing fitting, which one TIANLIN review reports, is a separate fault.
What working pressure do the coils in this set state?
YOTOO states 150 PSI, and the maximum field matches it. Darnassus states 120 PSI working and 360 PSI burst, then prints 360 PSI as the maximum. TIANLIN states 10 bar, also written as 1 MPa. Use the working figure, and do not promote the Darnassus burst number to a running pressure.
