Air hose buying guide

Updated: 21.10.2026

The hose that came with the compressor reaches the bench and stops short of the car. A replacement on amazon.co.uk often says 1/4 inch, and that label can mean the screw thread, the click-on nose, or a guess at the bore. This air hose buying guide puts those decisions in order before you compare brands. Match the coupling you already own, then the bore, then the length, then a working pressure that is not the burst figure. The [air hose comparison](/hub/compressors/air-hose) holds the eleven listings, the shelf prices, and the review counts. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Those listings were checked on 19 October 2026. This is not a lab test.

What 1/4 inch does and does not mean

Start with the fitting that is already on the compressor, because a hose that will not click is useless however wide the bore is. BSP is a pipe thread. A 1/4 inch BSP male plug screws into a 1/4 inch BSP female port, which is what LIKEEM states on the red and blue hybrids and what Bluespot states on the 07952. Euro and the older British PCL pattern are the shapes that click, and they are not the thread. Kes Air Technology, a PCL dealer, describes the British profile as longer: a Euro plug will not click into a British coupling, and a British plug can sit loose in a Euro coupling. YOTOO and TIANLIN state a European quick coupler. BGS only prints 6.3 mm, and UK reviews on that listing say the ends were Euro and missed older British fittings until they were changed. Darnassus names both a 6 mm NPT industrial coupler and brass thread fittings, so that page does not settle the standard.

Bore first, length second

The inside diameter is the air passage. The outside diameter is the bulk of the tube, and the thread size is neither of them. In this set the bores that are actually stated run from 4 mm on the TIANLIN coil, through 6 mm to 6.5 mm on most of the YOTOO, LIKEEM blue, and BGS lines, up to 9.5 mm on the LIKEEM red hybrids. Bluespot's title says 10 m x 8 mm and the outside diameter is also listed as 8 mm, so the bore is not stated and should not be invented. The Hosemaster's buying guide treats about 1 to 3 cubic feet a minute as the sort of flow a 6 mm hose is asked to carry. That is their rule of thumb, not a measurement of these ASINs. Five metres of 9.5 mm hose moves more air than twenty metres of 6 mm hose, and a coil's printed length is the catalogue figure, not always the distance you can walk.

Working pressure, not the burst number

Run the hose at the working pressure, and treat a burst figure as the number you do not use. LIKEEM's bullets keep 300 PSI working separate from 1,200 PSI burst. YOTOO's grey hybrid bullets do the same, 300 PSI working and 1,200 PSI burst, but the maximum-pressure field on that listing prints 1,200 PSI. Darnassus bullets say 120 PSI working and 360 PSI burst, and the maximum field prints 360 PSI. If you take the largest number on the page, you are reading the burst line. YOTOO's polyurethane coils state 150 PSI and the maximum field matches that working figure. TIANLIN states 10 bar and also 1 MPa, and those two figures agree, with no separate burst line. BGS states a maximum of 20 bar, also printed as 290 PSI, and reviews on that ASIN include bulges and bursts around 6 to 7 bar. None of these listings states BS EN ISO 2398 or BS EN ISO 5774.

Material and a cold garage

Rubber, PVC fabric, a PVC-and-rubber hybrid, and polyurethane behave differently when the garage is unheated. Bluespot is the rubber tube in this set, claimed as oil and abrasion resistant, with no temperature range printed. BGS is PVC fabric, also with no temperature range, and reviewers call it light and prone to kinking. LIKEEM's hybrids state −20 °C to 65 °C. TIANLIN and Darnassus state −20 °C to 60 °C. YOTOO's polyurethane coils state −40 °F to 150 °F, which is the listing's own unit, not a converted UK test. A coil stores itself and often springs back short of the printed metres. A straight hybrid or rubber hose lies still, which matters as soon as a gun must not be tugged. The best air hose page names which of these listings fits a nailer, a tyre, or a wider bore. The recoil or straight air hose page is the shape decision.

Common questions

Is 1/4 inch the bore or the thread?
On these listings, 1/4 inch is usually the fitting, not the air passage. LIKEEM and Bluespot mean a 1/4 inch BSP thread. YOTOO and TIANLIN mean a European quick coupler of that nominal size. The stated bores are 4 mm, 6 mm, 6.5 mm, or 9.5 mm. Bluespot never states an inside diameter, so the 8 mm in the title cannot be treated as the bore.
Do I need 6 mm, 8 mm, or 10 mm?
Match the bore to the tool, then the length. A 6 mm hose in this set is the common line for a nailer or a tyre inflator near the compressor. The only stated bore near 10 mm is the LIKEEM 9.5 mm hybrid. Nothing here is sold as an 8 mm inside diameter. The Hosemaster's 1 to 3 cubic feet a minute note for 6 mm hose is their guide, not a test of these hoses.
Will a Euro coupler click onto an older British fitting?
Not reliably. A PCL dealer note says a Euro plug will not click into a British coupling, and a British plug can sit loose in a Euro socket. BGS reviews describe that mismatch on a hose that only says 6.3 mm. Check the nose you already own before you assume every quarter-inch fitting is the same.
Is 300 PSI the pressure I can run, or the burst figure?
Read the word beside the number. LIKEEM's 300 PSI is the working pressure, and 1,200 PSI is the burst figure. On the grey YOTOO hybrid and on Darnassus, the maximum-pressure field copies the burst number. Use the working figure, and scrap a hose that has blistered.
How long a hose before pressure falls away?
There is no single metre count. A long 6 mm hose drops more pressure than a short 9.5 mm hose doing the same job. One shared review on the LIKEEM red listings describes about 20 PSI at an HVLP gun on a 20 m 6 mm hose and over 50 PSI after a change to 9.5 mm. That is one review, not a formula.
What should I check on a cold garage hose?
Use the temperature line on the listing, not a guess. LIKEEM states −20 °C to 65 °C. TIANLIN and Darnassus state −20 °C to 60 °C. YOTOO's coils state −40 °F to 150 °F. If the page has no range, as with Bluespot and BGS, you do not have a cold claim to rely on.
