Air hose for a spray gun

Updated: 21.10.2026

The compressor gauge sits near the pressure you set, and the gun still spits, fans out, or drops off halfway through a panel. The usual cause is the air hose for the spray gun, not a gauge that has suddenly started lying. Air is lost along a long, narrow tube, so the pressure at the gun inlet is lower than the pressure in the tank. You can shorten the hose, increase the bore, or both. You should not treat one paint-gun manual as the rule for every HVLP kit in a UK garage. The [air hose comparison](/hub/compressors/air-hose) lists the bores that are actually stated on these amazon.co.uk hoses. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Manufacturer notes and one shared UK review were set side by side on 19 October 2026. Nobody sprayed a test panel for this page.

The gauge on the tank is not the gauge at the gun

A tank gauge reads the receiver. The gun reads whatever is left after the hose and the couplings. DeVilbiss service bulletin SB-2-475 tells owners of that maker's guns not to use a 1/4 inch inside-diameter hose. Their worked example is 25 feet of 1/4 inch hose at 18 cubic feet a minute, losing 25 psi, against 8 psi of loss on a 5/16 inch hose. They also want high-flow quick connects. That example is their gun, their flow, and their length. It is not a test of a 5 m or 10 m hose from this set, and the 25 psi and 8 psi figures should not be averaged into a UK rule of thumb. Sealey's HVLP05 instructions point the other way on the minimum: they ask for a hose of at least 1/4 inch inside diameter, with fittings of the same inside size, and they say to raise the line pressure when the hose is over 8 metres. The same manual family states 14.12 cubic feet a minute for that model. A leader hose is their answer if a quick coupling would vibrate on the gun. Those two documents disagree, so they stay apart. SGS Engineering's general note is the part both can share: a longer hose loses more pressure.

6 mm, 1/4 inch, and 9.5 mm are not one size

A quarter inch is about 6.35 mm, so a stated 6 mm bore is in the band Sealey treats as a minimum and in the band DeVilbiss tells its own users to avoid. A stated 6.5 mm bore is barely wider. A stated 9.5 mm bore is the step up, closer to the 5/16 inch and 3/8 inch hoses finishers talk about, and it is still not a promise that every gun will be happy. The only figure in this set from a UK buyer is one review on the LIKEEM red listings. The compressor was about 160 PSI. A 20 m hose of 6 mm left the HVLP gun around 20 PSI. After a change to the 9.5 mm hose the same review puts the gun above 50 PSI, against a gun that wanted about 30 to 35 PSI, and 5 m was enough for that job. The text is shared between the 5 m ASIN B0HCZC66LY and the 10 m ASIN B0HCZ7HC6H, and one of the reviewers says they bought 30 m, so you cannot pin the result on both lengths. It is one review, not a formula. The connectors in that review were fixed, so the nose on the hose still has to match the gun and the compressor.

What this comparison actually lists

The 9.5 mm hoses are the LIKEEM red hybrids. Five metres is £15.99 and ten metres is £19.99, both with a 15 mm outside diameter, brass 1/4 inch BSP ends, bend restrictors, and 300 PSI working pressure kept separate from 1,200 PSI burst. Five ratings each, with the texts copied across, is a thin sample. The fixed ends mean you adapt the tool, not the hose. The grey YOTOO hybrid, B09K7NZ5SP, is the next straight hose, 15 m at 6.5 mm and £26.99, with Euro steel ends. It is wider than 6 mm by a small margin and longer than the LIKEEM pair, so it is a poor bet if your gun is already short of air on 6 mm. Reviews also describe a leaking female coupler and one hose that sheared at 140 PSI, under the 300 PSI working claim. The maximum field on that page copies the 1,200 PSI burst number. Skip the TIANLIN coil for spraying. It is 4 mm and 9 m at £9.99, which is a blow-gun bore. Skip Bluespot 07952 as a spray-bore recommendation. It is rubber, 10 m, £14.95, 1/4 inch BSP, and the inside diameter is not stated. The air hose buying guide keeps the rest of the size order.

A hose that lies still

Bore is only half of the spray problem. A recoil hose pulls the gun back toward the compressor, and that tug shows up as a mark at the end of a pass. SGS Engineering notes that some painters prefer a standard hose for that reason. The YOTOO polyurethane coils are the tidy option for a nailer, and they are the wrong shape here even when a review mentions HVLP in passing. Lay out a straight hose, keep it no longer than the job, and use a leader if the gun maker asks for one so the quick coupling is not vibrating on the gun body. Do not blow dust off your skin or your clothes while you set the gun up. HSE's HSG39 treats that as an injection and eye risk. If the gun's own manual states a minimum hose bore, follow that manual for that gun, and use the DeVilbiss numbers only for a DeVilbiss gun. The recoil or straight air hose page is the coil-versus-flat choice for other tools. For this job, in this set, the straight 9.5 mm LIKEEM hose is the one with a stated wider bore, on the condition that your fittings are 1/4 inch BSP and that you treat the pressure story as a single shared review.

Common questions

Why is the gun short of pressure if the compressor gauge looks fine?
The gauge is on the tank. The gun is at the end of the hose. A long 6 mm line can drop the pressure before the air arrives, which is what the shared LIKEEM review describes: about 160 PSI at the compressor and about 20 PSI at the gun. Raising the tank pressure does not remove a narrow hose. Shortening the hose or increasing the bore does.
Is 6 mm enough for HVLP?
It depends on the gun. Sealey's HVLP05 instructions treat 1/4 inch inside diameter, about 6 mm, as a minimum, and tell you to raise line pressure above 8 metres. DeVilbiss tells users of its own guns not to use 1/4 inch inside diameter at all. A 6 mm hose from this set can be enough for a small gun at short range, and it is the hose the LIKEEM review found wanting at 20 m.
What does Sealey say, and why is that not the same as DeVilbiss?
Sealey specifies a minimum of 1/4 inch for the HVLP05 and a higher line pressure on hoses over 8 metres. DeVilbiss SB-2-475 says not to use 1/4 inch inside diameter, with an example of 25 psi loss on 25 feet at 18 cubic feet a minute. Different guns, different flows. Do not merge them into one rule for every UK DIY kit.
Which hose in this set is the 9.5 mm option?
LIKEEM's red hybrids, 5 m at £15.99 and 10 m at £19.99, both state 9.5 mm inside and 15 mm outside, with 1/4 inch BSP ends that reviewers say are fixed. The review texts are shared, so the 10 m listing does not have its own spraying record. Five ratings is not a large sample.
Should the spray hose be a recoil coil?
Not if the spring will pull the gun. A coil is useful beside a nailer. For a panel, a straight hose that lies still is the better shape, even when the bore is right. The YOTOO coils are 6 mm as well, so they give you the tug and the narrower bore together.
Does a longer hose always need a bigger compressor?
Not always. Sealey's note is to raise the regulated pressure for a hose over 8 metres, which assumes the compressor can supply the gun's air in the first place. If the tank already falls away while you spray, the hose is not the only limit. A wider, shorter hose reduces the loss. It does not enlarge the pump.
What coupling should be on a spray hose?
The same family as the compressor and the gun. LIKEEM's 9.5 mm hoses are 1/4 inch BSP and the ends are fixed, so a Euro-only gun needs an adaptor on the tool, not a spanner on the hose. YOTOO's grey hybrid is Euro, on a 6.5 mm bore, with leak reports at the female coupler. High-flow fittings are what DeVilbiss asks for on its guns. These listings do not state a high-flow coupler.
