How to fit a battery motion sensor light

Updated: 20.10.2026

The unit is in your hand, the pad is still on the backing, and you do not want to drill the hall. How to fit a battery motion sensor light comes down to three checks: the lens looks across the walk, the surface is clean, and the mode is night-only. Miss one and the light seems deaf, the pad lets go, or it dies while you stand in the wardrobe. The [motion sensor battery comparison](/hub/burglar-protection/motion-sensor-battery) is the product table. This page is the method for one light, not a ranking and not a 230 V wiring guide. Put the lens across the route

A PIR on these small lights notices someone crossing its view more readily than someone walking straight at it. Aim the lens along the hall and you often have to wave. Aim it across the landing, so a normal step cuts the field, and the same puck starts to make sense. Keep the lens off a radiator, a tumble-dryer vent and another lamp. The STAR-SPANGLED 7 inch bar swivels about 90 degrees, so you can correct a first aim without peeling the pad. One BLS buyer saw the sensor at about half the claimed 10 feet (about 3 metres). Move it before you call the PIR dead.

Pads, magnets and rented paint

Clean the spot before you peel. Ring’s note for alarm contacts, not these lights, asks for a degreaser, a dry surface, a firm press, and 24–72 hours before load. Tesa’s no-drill lamp piece says the same: clean, then let the adhesive cure. Hanging the light and the cells in the same minute is how a pad creeps down a landing wall. Dust, fresh emulsion, textured wallpaper and a cold tile let go. A magnet plate lets you unclip a USB bar to charge, and a bump knocks the generic 20 cm bars off. Click the STAR-SPANGLED 11 inch cover and tug it before you commit to the pad. Renters should assume a pad can lift paint. The Auraglow AG708 avoids the wall by standing on a table.

Night-only, always-on, and the 20-second cut-off

Set night-only before you judge the sensor. Day-and-night mode triggers at noon and is the AmmToo complaint that flattens AAA cells in about a month. The BLS names on, off, auto at night, and auto day and night. Most of the others use about 20 seconds. In daylight, with the mode set, the light should stay off. Once you have set the mode and ruled out a neighbouring lamp, a unit that still runs at noon is a return, not a technique error. A light that dies while you are still in the wardrobe is often on its timer. The Auraglow has a permanent on/off and stays lit while motion continues. Fit the cells after the mode test. Several lights along a flight are on stairs and hallways.

When to stop and return it

Stop adjusting the aim when the hardware is wrong. A dead LED is the STAR-SPANGLED 3.1 inch complaint: one buyer had a dead light in a three-pack, and that puck has no off switch. A cover that will not click shut is a return. A rechargeable pack that is hot or swollen is a stop. Do not keep charging it. One Demlaies unit would not charge. The AmmToo eight-pack says rechargeable and also specifies AAA cells, so a missing USB port is the listing. A shower, a new 230 V circuit, or a stair that needs a handrail is where a puck is the wrong tool. Sticking these lights up is ordinary battery work. Changing the house wiring is electrician work. Shape and power are on the buying guide and rechargeable or alkaline.

Common questions

Do I need a screwdriver?
Not for the stick-on and magnetic lights. Peel, press, and lift a magnetic plate to change a cell or to charge. Oumida and RAWNICE also mention screws. The Auraglow stands on a table. A new mains point is a different job.
Why does it only come on when I wave at it?
The lens is probably aimed along your walk, so you enter the field at the last step. Turn it so people cross the view, and keep it off a radiator or another lamp. A mains PIR manual makes the same across-versus-towards point. Its mounting height does not belong on these pucks. The 7 inch swivel is the easy correction.
Why does it switch off while I am still in the wardrobe?
Most of these lights drop out about 20 seconds after the last movement. The Detake is listed at 30 seconds. Standing still is invisible to a PIR. For a task, use always-on, as on the Auraglow, or wave to retrigger. That cut-off is the spec, unless the light no longer triggers at all.
The sticky pad failed. What surface was wrong?
Dust, grease, fresh paint, textured paper and a cold tile are the usual causes. Clean, dry the spot, press, and let the pad cure before the light and the cells hang on it. Ring’s alarm-contact note and tesa’s no-drill piece both ask for that wait. A magnet avoids some paint risk. A bump can still knock the generic bars off.
It runs all day and eats batteries. Which mode is that?
Day-and-night auto, or a unit that ignores darkness. The BLS lists both night auto and day-and-night auto, so switch to night. AmmToo reviews describe daylight triggering that empties AAA cells in about a month. If it still runs at noon after you move it off another lamp, return it.
Can I fit it in the shower?
No. This folder does not state IP44 or IP65. Most listings say not water resistant, and moisture resistant has no code. A dry wall outside the spray is as far as these pucks go. A light in the shower, on a new circuit, is electrician work.
The cells were not in the box. Is that a fault?
On these AA and AAA listings, the cells are specified as not included. That is the product page, unless a bullet on your exact ASIN said they were in the box. USB models have a built-in cell. The AmmToo eight-pack is the confusing page: rechargeable in one line, three AAA cells in the bullets.
